Small correction I'd like to make on Tacticooler. According to LeanYoshi, a dedicated dataminer and analyzer in Splatoon, Tacticooler actually only provides 29 AP towards Run Speed Up and Swim Speed Up, instead of 57 (3 pures), and doesn't stack any higher than 29 unless you have more by default. Just a small correction that should be pointed out.
You see, there's almost no information rn on the wiki, I thought it was confirmed because someone put 3 pures on the page. Goes to show you shouldn't trust wikis lmao. I've been scouring through LeanYoshi's tweets the past few days and missed this. Thanks for the info !
Thank you for sacrificing your time to do this underwhelming test on every special's SPU effects, i hope they either change how it works on some of these, or buff what their current gimmick is because as of now, SPU is worthless lmao
@@Seggtor well, it's also nice on wave crasher too, a larger radius can totally catch players by surprise. I think heavy splatling benifits that the most there.
ive heard just one main of it adds a full 3 seconds to the tacticooler buff, which seems nice. (havent watched the vid yet just instantly going to the comments lmao.)
So overall, don't use Special Power Up unless you use a weapon with Killer Wail, Tacticooler, or Tenta Missles (or Inkjet if you decide to have alot of it equipped).
Inkjet might get the extra shot just barely at a lower amount. With one main and one sub, as long as you spam the shots, might get the last one out BARELY before it times out. EDIT: One main and two subs or 1.6 for 8 shots.
Underwhelming, with the exception of tacticooler and wave breaker. The tacticooler gaining 3 seconds from a single main ability is HUGE, and the added range on the wave breaker makes it a lot more unpredictable than it already is
I can definitely see Heavy running some SPU, considering it's the Wave Breaker weapon with the least gear dependence currently (all the others are ink hungry or benefit strongly from other abilities).
@@sonicrunn3r895 I like running SPU on Heavy myself. It's a lot of fun to throw WB on Tower and certain maps on Zones. Mahi-Mahi Zones is especially fun, that little sniper perch with the block is the PERFECT spot. Covers the entire zone and even a bit into the enemy sniper perch!
I'd say Wail is also one you'd wanna run SPU on, One main ability might only give about 15 extra frames or 4% extra duration but since that applies to all speakers you end up with a potential of 72 extra damage
Notable the tacticooler actually sets your run and swim speed to 29AP, unless you already have 30 or more, meaning if you have 3 mains of swim speed tacticooler will not speed you up at all, same with run speed
With all the numbers it was a bit hard to follow sometimes. In a future guide, could you perhaps add an overview to each section about everything that changes? 3:00 Just something in text like: + increases speed at which the special meter depletes + increases buff duration by +- 7 seconds or 5:17: + increases throw distance + increases duration by 1 second
SPU on booyah is actually really good, makes it even harder to cancel, in S2 using one main would make you survive even in 1v3s, it was rarely used bc other stuff was still prioritized, but you could get away in very clutch situations
Honestly it seems like they overcompensated and made it way too weak of an ability. Glad to see Missiles was basically unchanged tho, if you decide to go for a missile heavy strategy it can maybe be mixed as 1 pure each of SPU, SCU, and special saver to both use it often and get more targets, although at that point you might as well do only special charge and saver (like you said with simply spamming it being better)

did more testing with the zipcaster weapons because different weapons see more benefit from ink saver main than others (paragraph below), tl;dr: octobrush & carbon roller - 1 main each of special power up & ink saver main / splatana stamper - 2 mains of ink saver main / luna blaster - 3 mains of ink saver main so i did a couple more tests with the zipcaster for each weapon. turns out some weapons benefit from different mixes of special power and ink saver main. octobrush gets 22 flicks with 1 main each of special power and main saver, so you get a free extra main slot to work with vs using 3 mains of either. for luna blaster, the main weapon is so ink hungry that no abilities gets 7 shots, 1 main each of special power and main saver and gets 8 shots, and 3 mains of ink saver main gets 9 shots. 3 mains of special power doesn't even get an 8th shot. since ink saver main will benefit you even when you're not in zipcaster, it's better to stack 30AP of that imo. carbon roller goes from 10 to 12 flicks with 3 mains of main saver or 1 main each of special power and main saver, 11 flicks with 3 main of special power. finally, splatana stamper goes from 11 flicks to 12 flicks with 3 mains of special power, 13 flicks with 1 main each of special power and main saver, and 14 flicks with 3 mains of ink saver main. 2 mains of ink saver main also gets you 13 flicks, and like with luna blaster, it'll benefit you even outside of zipcaster, and imo freeing up a main ability for more versatile gear is more valuable than a 14th stamper flick during zipcaster. no matter which weapon you use, it's always better to err on the side of having more ink saver main, both because it has better diminishing returns, and because it benefits you outside of zipcaster

You do NOT want to wish for damage+ on weapons. You don't want 99.9 damage Bamboo, or 3HKO on L3, 2HKO on H3, One taps from 96 when chipped in a fight, etc... Despite missing it myself for some weapons, I'm glad it's gone. Intensify action is more healthy for the game as a replacement
@@Seggtor ah true, the nozzles do hit pretty hard and the 'boozler is annoying. whats so good about intensify action? i dont understand what its supposed to do or if it benefits my playstyle.
Wait, I've heard that on tacticooler the special up increases the mobility effects even further, and there is one thing I was curious about that wasn't tested on big bubbler, what does super jumping to it do? I ask this cuz I love beacons and I know that running sub power up let's everyone jump to your beacons like if they had super jump speed up, even though it's only you that's running the sub power up.
I had forgotten to test it out, someone else had asked the same thing. I tested it Turf war tonight, neither sub power up or special power up affect the jumping speed to big bubbler. Truly disappointing.
I really wish SPU let you chuck the Booyah bomb further. The effect would be on par with Sub Power Up for most bombs, letting you throw them further. Special Powerup is already an iffy proposition as it is buffs something that you might use, AT MOST, half a dozen times a match, but much more likely you'll be using it fewer times.
Reefslider is such an awkward special, that I was disappointed that it didn’t go further or go faster with SPU, days ago. It really needs to be buffed as so and not some pitiful “increase” of a blast radius.
They really should've had something like main power up's description in 2 where it would tell you exactly what it did for whatever weapon you had equipped. I swore it also did that for sub and special power in 2 but after checking it apparently doesn't. They also removed the brand icons from the drink selection menu, telling you what ability each brand favored...
Speaking of things they removed that I miss : seeing the current of my gear in the loadout screen. Now to see the xp on your gear you have finish a match.
I really hoped they would change sub and special power up in this game so they aren't awful useless abilities but it doesn't seem like that happened. There are so many things they could do other than increase duration or throwing range that would actually be cool and make those abilities interesting to use but nope they went with something that just makes them stupid and dumb instead. Oh well
Those abilities have certain niches. I remember giant splashdowns in splatoon 2 from superjumps, very funny. Or even pures of Sub Power up to make fizzy bomb have more range than E-Liter.
The fact that 30ab barely does anything for any of the specials but for tacticooler it just adds an additional 7sec?!?! even more reason its the best special in the game.
Also, uh... does the Tacticooler only apply duration based on the Caster's SPU or the User's SPU? Ie, the teammates or yourself? But yes, thank you for this test. I'm probably gonna stop using it on my builds.

Yeah i use 16 ap in tatical cooler, and it can ve a life saver to respaw fast when tou try to ruah the enemy. Specially the last seconds of A match, can change a lot the tide
Pair this up with Stealth Jump and Comeback/LDE (which is common in ranked builds), you got yourself a team that's hard to push against !
Very informative, thank you!
Thank you so much for experimenting this!!
It was a lot of work, but worth it ! As I was also wondering myself lol
i always knew sub/special power up was mostly worthless, thats why i go for ink savers/special savers chargers/defense stuff.
splatoon 3 is my first in the series, and i used the wiki and researched abilities a bit.
i hope main power up comes back though, having a gun do more damage sounds great, and might make my explosher actually splat way better.
@@nox_luna Oh you know, jump deaccuracy casualy ruining fights and getting you killed, Intensify action prevents that.
@@Seggtor i cant say i do jump shooting very often lol, should i learn that?
@@nox_luna Depends on the weapon, it can drastically increase your range or save you in a pinch. Usually it's worse for your aim though.
I never get what special power up do, this helps a lot!
Great video! I was wondering the same thing!
Congrats on 1k subs
I could never remember all this math, but very interesting still
Thank you i can now swap that perk out with some of my builds
Glad I could help
600 subs? You got 1.13k+1 now
Reefslider is such an awkward special, that I was disappointed that it didn’t go further or go faster with SPU, days ago. It really needs to be buffed as so and not some pitiful “increase” of a blast radius.
Thankyou!
@@Seggtor oh yeah. That's a really strange thing for them to change
Something that you might have missed is the Squid Beacon part of Big Bubbler. Does it work like sub power up in that it speeds up the superjump?
Neither sub power up or SPU work for jump speed on big bubbler.
THANK YOU SO MUCH
