  • Twice a year the forbidding journey to the boarding school is necessary. Father Latak, looks to the sky and attempts to predict how the weather will develop. Only when he is sure that no storm is brewing, he starts to prepare the children for the trip over the river. It is a route that is so notorious, that it even has a name: Chadar - the path over the cloak of ice. One last time, his ten year old son Motup, plays in front of their hut. Motup is one of the few kids who regularly leave the village in order to attend one of the the better schools in town. Then the family gets ready for the long trip. The mother has sewn thick wool socks for the father and the children, and Tebean prayers and mantras are recited for protection along the way. Then the trip begins, where the children muss trust completely the experience and skill of their father.
The first steps, only a few kilometres until the frozen river, seem easy for the family. But father Latak recognizes immediately that the spring has come early this year and the sun has already began to compromise the ice. This is not a good sign, since the thinner the ice the more dangerous the trip becomes. Latak goes before the children and tests with a stick before each step on the ice. Often the ice cracks a bit, but the ice remains whole. Latak knows that no one should travel the Chadar without a good reason. But the education of the children is a good enough reason to take on the risks involved.
He knows that if he goes first and the ice carries his weight, that it will also carry the weight of the children. If it does not, it will be he that will fall in the icy water and not his two children. At the same time, Latak, Motup and the other members of the crew must keep a close eye on the mountains. The massive mountain ranges on both sides of them seem to be a scene form a picture book, peaceful and lordly. But there is danger lurking. At any given time, an avalanche can break out. Many times before people have been caught by avalanches here.
In the mean time the sun has already thawed the middle of the river. But since there are steep rocks right and left, Latak must now search for a new path for them to continue on. He leaves Motup behind him and luckily finds a way. It is a 20 cm wide path on the rocks at the edge of the river, and up to ten meters high.
They need almost an hour, skipping from rock to rock until they finally reach an area where the river is again covered with ice. Now they must find a place to set up camp as soon as possible before it becomes dark and the temperatures sink to as low as -30 degrees Celsius. Latak knows a cave where they will be protected and finally be able to get some rest. They must gather their strength because the most dangerous part of the Chadar still lies before them.
The ice is almost completely melted. Only a 50 cm wide strip borders right and left the ice-cold water, making the river absolutely impassible. Rocky overhangs above the ice block the way. Father and son must now crawl its way to school. Father Latak tests his way over the ice on his belly. After any progress made, he pulls his son by their hands to him.
There are countless dangerous situations that make this way to school so unpredictable. But after four days it is over, they have reached their goal; the city of Leh and the school.

I cried so much watching this for so many reasons. In the Western world many of us take education for granted, and here we see fathers and children risking their lives so that they can go to school. Not only that, but they are separated for months on end, away from their parents. As a mother I found it heart wrenching when the dad's had to leave straight away without even a break 😥. This documentary makes me feel truly grateful to be able to cuddle my children and have warmth this winter, and all the other things that makes our lives easier.
I hope they got back safely and the families are doing well as its been some time since this was filmed.

However the fathers take the shortest route by bare foot which goes through Hemmis national park along the Zanskar river which is just around 100 km. Don't be silly. Some of this was clearly from a carried camera. Not to mention the fact that a drone can't just fly for hundreds of kilometres and start recording. There's always an operator a few metres away. Whilst there's no doubt that some of this is filmed for dramatic effect, it is actually trying to tell the story of how it would be if the camera crew weren't there, regardless.

I salute the dedication of the children to walked 4 days with iced cold way.. Cant imagine their tiredness but theyre very willing to sacrifice to get education.. An eye opener to those much fortunate ones that doesnt value education that being offered already almost at their doorstep.. And my salute to the parents.. Its rare to see their support to their children dreams.. Some parents dont let their children get educated for same reasons the unaccessible schools.

Being part of same region called ladakh. To be honest, we don't need any sympathy and pity from anyone ,but what we need is our basic rights which is enshrined not only in indian constitution but one of the SDG's objectives i.e access to quality education and health care facilities for all. We love to be who we are , where we are born. Ladakh is unique world in itself which is base on buddist philosophy especially compassion and love to all including ecology and environment.we may not have luxurious foods to eat ,alishan house to to live but we are very much happy to eat our local dishes and live simply in our little house which is made up of muddes ,bricks and stones stick and woods. This documentary remind me of my child hood when we used to play with snow ball with friends. Those children who got golden opportunity to educate themselves are few but what about others left out without education facilities? Govt. And civil society must bring facilities at doorstep instead of few hand picking child.

And the new Bilaspur - Leh railway line will usher a new era for Ladakh as you will be connected to the rest of India by rail.
Plus another good news for you the BJP Government has also been busy in making land laws for your people to protect your land rights. So sit tight brother we are all Indians and will support our brothers and sisters in Ladakh.

@Parth Arjun excuse me sir..! How is it human nature to deprive education and health to it's citizens? Instead of making funny excuses and mockery, we should try to bring transparency in governance.we need active participated in governance and walk on progressive path of development. In fact it's not about any particular region in indian but same problem is facing every nook and corner of country. The paradox is few elite class are enjoying the benefits in post independent India, even though those few elite rode on back of mass indian on the pretext of giving them quality life but nothing has happened till now. Our farmers brothers are suiciding every day and women becoming insecure in every big cities.etc etc. Of course the problem of quality life in UP bihar is not due to human nature but human created problem, see the population data one in every 4 child is born in this region every day. So I think some of fundamental issues are not sth related to human nature bhai.

Focus your eyes on the one who’s bones cannot be found on this earth. The one who gives wisdom , knowledge and talents. Focus on the one that cannot be contained in any rock or piece of wood. Focus on the one who has his eyes set on your people. Focus on the one who prepared a firm path to eternal life. On the one who hears your yearns and is just waiting to reveal himself to you if you call out his name “ Jesus “ he will hear your concerns . He will bless you and save you for eternal life. Man and government are not responsible for you God almighty Jehovah the 1 true God will respond for you if you call out his name “Jesus” . Believe in him and acknowledge him as the True living God and I know he will respond to you ! Much blessings in Jesus name. He died on the cross and rose from the grave for our sins and now sits on his throne . Repent of your life without Jesus and start over walking with Him by faith his path is the only way to heaven . His love and mercy is enough to be forgiven . He came to rescue us all from the wickedness of our enemy it is precisely our sins that he died on the cross for. Jesus is the light of the world .

Small water running around straight from the Himalayan Glacier and you can drink straight from there. This place in the middle of nowhere with no official road. In summer you can drive there but in winter this place is locked by snow, so therefore there is no way you can drive there. I love this place and people are so nice.

A fair few children around the world are home Schooled and still come through it with flying colours. Home Schooling would be for me if I had no other choice but to do that terrible 4-day crossing of semi frozen, very fast flowing and very dangerous rivers and rocks to get to a town 90 km away. I'm vision impaired myself, so its illegal for me to drive a vehicle of any kind, but, never say never. In the meantime, I would probably homeschool my children, if and when I have children, or I'd relocate to within walking distance of the School which I wanted my children to attend and our friends and family from elsewhere could visit during half terms, holidays.
