The BEST Way to Discover Your Artistic Style

  • The quickest, easiest way to find your artistic style is to keep showng up and making as much art as possible. The most important part is to start DOING. Don't over think it. Don't try to make it pretty. Just start assembling. Resistance thrives on the "ugh, I'm not going to make something amazing, so I shouldn't even start" mindset. This is not the time to judge your work. You can do that later if you choose, but today is just about DOING. Put your phone down and create (no judgement here - I too feel naked without my phone, but we both know there's more to life). This creative practice will help you get out of your head so you can simply play. Then play as often as humanly possible. It's a numbers game. Create! Create! Create!
Whatever you keep making over and over and over again because you ENJOY making it, THAT's the sweet spot. Keep doing the thing!

Your advice “Quantity over Quality” is so true!!! I was combining encaustic wax with photography and selling my art, then I learned how to gelli print. I wanted to combine both mediums with collage. I failed miserably. I stopped making large artworks and started playing with collage, gelli prints and photos in an old notebook. Day after day, month after month, feeling lost. About one year and 5 notebooks later, I finally figured it out. I am doing large artworks again and am so glad I allowed myself a year of experimentation. Letting go of the “preciousness” allowed me to play.

Hi Jackie! This was such a needed "voice" for me. I'm a mult-passionate artist and at times I have felt (thanks in LARGE part to social media), that I MUST pick the one thing and just do that--because that's what others expect or want or that's what I'm being made to feel like I SHOULD do in order to become "sucessful'' or "good' or "professional". It can be so disheartening and I have often felt that there is something insufficient with the way my creative mind shows up in the word--it's either too much of one thing or not enough of something else...I so appreciate how you offer such kindness and support to those of us finding our way back to the Light of our creativity. Very grateful for all that you are willing to share and for who you are! Thank you! Isa from New York

Thanks so much for your comment, Isa! ❤️ The "shoulds" are always lingering in the shadows (that sounds a bit more dark than I mean for it to, but I think you know what I mean lol) - when doubt creeps in, it's easy to start listening to what other people think you SHOULD do. Keep following your own joy and see where it leads you ❤️❤️❤️

You’re singing my song. I can barely tolerate to do watercolor mountain landscapes after 20 years. I get great joy with mixed media, but still looking for my style. Will gladly try your suggestions. Thank you.

OH MY GOODNESS…. “I put so much pressure on myself to making my one thing great”…. GURRRRLLLL that spoke to me. Thank you so much. My family is going through a terrible time right now and I needed to hear this as it applies to my art, because I use my art for therapy.

I’ve been a bit stuck and frustrated lately, and i credit some of that to being asked “ when will you make something i can hang on the wall”! Aaargh! Possibly never. But as soon as i try, i get stressed and angry with myself.
Related, though: what do you do with all the non-wall-worthy “stuff” that you generate doing this? Mine is starting to build up and it troubles me, as i’m a minimalist at heart!
Looking forward to the class on Friday 😊

Oh, so much pressure! 😬 There are LOTS of options for the not-ready-to-frame creations! Some ideas; Use it as collage paper in something else, paint one color over 80% of it, leaving a couple parts that you like show though and then continue working on it from there, cut it into smaller pieces of equal size and add something to each piece as its own little painting - from there you can leave as-is or turn it into a greeting card or postcard by gluing it to card stock and mail it to a friend. ☺️ Let me know what feels fun to you once you find something you like!

this has been my experience too - the more i put into a single painting, the more pressure there is for that painting to be perfect.
🖐 i have a lot of paintings that have come off the wall and are just sitting there because i can't be free with them anymore - i like where they're at and i'm terrified of messing them up - but they're not done!
we all need this permission. thank you. ❤

Thank you for the inspiration. I've always had 10 or more works going on at the same time not knowing where they were going since I started painting. I now leave them alone looking at them while doing other pieces until it hits me what they need. Most of my art work in my life was always quite calculated. I did stained glass professionally for many years, and that's one art you don't change up...I do silver work and that too is one that is hard to change the design while working on it. Metal is not very forgiving. But, what I love doing now has been the most freeing works and it makes me far less stressed and I look forward to doing it every day now, it no longer feels like a "JOB".... Thanks so much for all you do!! I know we all really appreciate you!!

Oh, that's so nice to hear, Paula - thank you! ❤️❤️❤️ I've done stained glass in the past (not professionally) and it's definitely not very flexible, though there's part of me that would like to try it again 20 years later :)

@@jackieschomburgart I totally get that, I still have all my tools and think about doing it again for just one more piece for a new home we are going to be building.... I still have my first piece I'll probably just hang that one..lol

I haven't, and have no desire to put myself in a box for a style.
    I just make art.
I do it for the enjoyment and experience.
The feeling leads me. If i don't enjoy it, there's no point.
I don't sell my art (i have no idea how to even do this, or if anyone would want my work anyway) i think it might be an added stress, a pressure and a change in the way i art, and that would be terrible. Doing the art now, there is no perfectionism. Creating something for someone else could bring that back. I dunno. Who knows what might happen in the future.

So, what do you guys use when making black and white collage papers, like the stripes Jackie uses here? I've tried Pitt pens letting it dry and even spraying workable fixative and it still smears when I go to glue with matte medium. I try wiping it off but it's too late - it always loses that brilliant contrast I love so much.

    • @jackieschomburgart
      @jackieschomburgart  3 месяца назад +2

Try using a China marker/grease pencil - that's what I used here. If you're interested, these are the ones I use: amzn.to/4edCf1H ❤️
