Lessons I Learned After Buying a Fountain

  • What I learned after living with a three tier fountain for a couple years.
    - The depth of the water reservoir is very important. The more shallow, the more often you will need to add water to keep the water line above the pump.
    - In addition to evaporation, some fountains loose water due to splash from the cascade of water.
    - Each time you add water to a fountain, you should add algaecide to keep the water clear.
    - Colored fountains will fade in the sun and calcium build up will appear more prominent on a colored fountain.
    - If the fountain doesn’t have a drain plug, you will have bail or pump the water out of the fountain when you want to clean it.

Thanks for the tips, And I would just turn the fountain into a large flower pot with trailing flowers or plants.

We can do that if we decide it is too much trouble, but having a fountain was something we really wanted for the garden. So we will keep trying to make it work.😊

That’s a bummer that the fountain never worked out. But thanks for the tip.

It just didn't turn out like I expected. That said, it has a wonderful sound and i really enjoy that part of having a fountain.

Good information!! All good points to think about. All solvable issues. Algae will always have to be dealt with. Just takes money and time, and depends on how much you desire a fountain. Beautiful fountain. I hope you keep it going, and don't fill it with dirt and plants. Thanks for sharing!

We love the fountain, we just don't get to run it year round.

Add a cup of peroxide each week for algae.

you can use a hose to empty the fountain... just fill the hose with water and let gravity do the work

Get a wet/dry shop AC to empty it.

We have used the below brands that are supposed to be bird safe. Got them both via Amazon. They both work, but need to be added several times a week.
      EasyCare FounTec Algaecide and Clarifier
MICROBE-LIFT ALGA08 Algaway 5.4 Algae Control Treatment for Ponds and Water Gardens, Safe for Koi Fish, Goldfish, Plants, and Decorations

Remove the fountain, dig a deep pit, install plastic tank 24 to 36 inches deep 48 inch diameter tank open on top, dig the pit to the same depth of the tank . Use expanded metal on top of tank with concrete block in center to support fountain. Place pump in botom of tank with long hose for fountain Place fountain on expanded metal ,cover the rest of the metal with rock. Fill with water , if algae forms use chlorine tablets to subdue. Don't over use the chlorine birds can still drink the water.
