I know this is a joke, but after 33 years of local, state, and federal law enforcement experience, I am aware of multiple gun fights involving shotguns. Low, capacity, slow rate of fire, difficult to reload, high recoil, and long length are all mitigated by the one and done performance. That said a shotgun requires a great deal of training to use effectively. For that reason the FBI started fazing them out in favor of the M-4. As a FBI firearms instructor, I loved using the combat shotgun.

I'm retired DEA. I had a 14 inch sawed off Remington 870 issued to me the whole time I was in. It was easier to get in and out of cars with, and to maneuver when clearing houses and conducting raids, than either the 10.5 inch Colt Submachine gun I had for fifteen, years, or the 14.5 inch Rock River AR-15 I had the rest of the time. The worst, as far as getting in and out of cars quickly, was the AR-15. Even with the stock collapsed, it would get hung up all the time jumping out of cars after suspects. And, this may be subjective, but on the street, I found the shotgun got more respect in the hood than the rifles did.

I believe a combat shotgun in the hands of a TRAINED person, loaded with OO/#1/#4 buck, with a pistol on the belt is an excellent option for self defense. Definitely a greater learning curve with the shotgun. One round of OO buck to the torso inside of 25 yards is a DOA, game over scenario for the recipient. If trained, you have the option to quickly load rubber ammo, birdshot or a slug which gives you a multitude of options for various scenarios. I don't know for a fact but believe that a shotgun inside of 25 yards will deliver the most trauma to human tissue than anything legally available. Thanks for your videos!

However if one is going to choose a shotgun and has the financial ability, I would argue a proven semi auto such as a Benelli m4 (7+1+1 with ghost load) or Beretta 1301 (7+1) with a sling, light, and red dot firing a load such as flite control 00 buck would serve very well in a home defense role. I am not biased, I use a suppressed B&T apc9 Glock lower as my home defense firearm paired with a gen 4 Glock 19 cut for rmr as I’d prefer to not damage my family’s hearing. However it is important to note these are last priority behind exterior lighting, cameras, alarm system, dog, reinforced doors and locks. Whatever you choose, train with it. Use Federal LE 127 or LE 132 with flite control wad and with inside the home distances you’ll have perfectly focused spread. You also have basically 9 rounds of 9mm hitting your assailant with one pull of the trigger, and an actual defensive shotgun has more (plenty of) capacity for home defense than your birding shotgun there Chadd.

I'm jumping back in the shotgun conversation . I know I'm one of the guys that Chad is making fun of , HAHA but that's alright he's still my favorite podcast . As Chad knows and has talked about when his team were picking weapons , you need to look at the distance your likely to engage someone and what type of background you have . It's definitely going to vary greatly . In my case the town I live in doesn't even have a traffic light so I have certain options to choose from . On two sides of my property I have about fifty yards and on the other two about a hundred yards . If I were shooting a 223 or 308 you could kill one of your neighbors , you could even shoot through the person your confronting and kill a neighbor . I have a Glock carry gun and a Glock 35 with a light on my nightstand . When I step outside I will have the Glock 35 along with my Mossberg 590M magazine fed 12 gauge . You can get , 5,10,15 or 20 round magazines for this weapon . A typical 12 gauge 00 2 &3/4 shell
has eight or nine 30 caliber projectiles and they are very effective out to thirty yards or so and still pretty effective to fifty . I have several magazines and usually I have the ten round magazine in the weapon and it's loaded with 00 and slugs every other round the slugs are effective out to around a hundred yards . The slugs are 72 caliber and they will put the hurt on the bad guys . I used to own a HK91 that was selective fire so I do understand how good a AR 10 would be and that new Ruger 308 is looking really good . Now you guys can thank me if Chad makes another hilarious video . NUFF SAID

I have wanted the 590M but heard that the spring pressure inside the mags deform the plastic shells if left in for very long which can cause serious reliability problems and failures. That, combined with the fact it wouldn't probably be allowed in any 3 gun events (provided I ever get around to that) has been my main hesitation on one. Otherwise the 590M makes huge sense to me.
The only other SGs I like so far are the TS12 and KSG, each of which have their own pluses and minuses. A pistol and rifle was easy for me to find a goto for, but SGs not so much. Those are the 3 most interesting though, and *maybe the M3 since it's selectable between pump and semi, but I don't like the weight/distribution of it. So many trade offs with SGs it's hard to find a goto for myself on the subject.
Anyway, your experience on it's reliability would be most interesting to me since aside from that potential issue I definitely see the appeal of them.

What's the largest mag you have left loaded for a significant period, and for how long?
I know this is a n00b question, but might the types of shells matter too? Like maybe some are softer than others and more likely to deform? Low vs high brass maybe, and/or slugs vs buck vs birdshot, or something? I have the least amount of knowledge and experience with SGs, so idk but I could imagine something like that being the case.
PS: Merry Christmas and I am grateful to be from the USA, whatever criticisms I may have of a lot of aspects of the Government and its leadership.

What he failed to mention was the massive trauma caused by buckshot at close range and the fact that you are putting 9 or so rounds into your target for one pull of the trigger. Typically, home intruders that are shot by a handgun are found at the nearest emergency room. Intruders shot by rifle are typically found somewhere outside of the home. Intruders shot by 12 guage are typically found inside the dwelling. If you have to shoot someone you want them to immediately stop doing whatever it was that you shot them for and nothing does that more efficiently than a shotgun with proper ammunition selection. Also, do you live around bear? How is your local bear going to respond to a volley of 9mm as opposed to a well placed, quality slug? Get an 18" barrel 12 gauge 6 or 7 shot magazine with a short lop stock (13" for me), side saddle, tactical light, and an XS tritium big dot sight, load it with Federal LE tactical OO w/ flight control and some Federal LE tactical Truball deep penetrator slugs on the saddle and your in good shape. Don't forget to pattern your Federal flight control so you know exactly how small the spread is at varying distances. Don't take home defense lessons from Navy Seals, take advise from people who deal with the aftermath of home defense shootings like cops, fire/rescue, pathologists, trauma surgeons, coroners etc.

Those pistols are great, but it's the missed shots I'm worried about. Those bullets will penetrate multiple walls before they finally stop.

  • @onlyonecannoli3952

You're right! Each one of those shells has 9-15 9mm equivalent pellets, so you're shooting 36-60 9mm rounds at an intruder with just 4 shells. And if you are using a semi auto with a 10 round capacity like mine, you have 90-150 9mm pellets that you're putting down range within seconds. Why would anyone use a PCC or handgun with their 30, 20 or less round capacity to protect your home. Not saying that they're useless. Just making the very logical observation that they work best as supporting platforms to a shotgun. I mean, can your PCC or pistol change calibers on the fly...like switching from buckshot to slugs? Exactly my point. Glad we both agree that shotguns are the best option.

One squeeze of the trigger out of a 12 ga 00 buck puts 9 30 cal projectiles down range. Not only is that massively effective, but legally speaking you are way more justified. I challenge you to find an "over the counter" gun that has more stopping power in a single shot than a shotgun. I get it, in a fire fight you need mag capacity, but for home Invasion, I am grabbing a high capacity shotgun all day, especially if it is a KSG or box fed variant.

    Hey a Sig!
All in all for my thoughts on your position, I think this is the clear stance to take if you have, not just a home, but property you have to defend, because the spread of the shell is not a huge concern in the range of a home. BUT, I think you make a fair point. Many of the so called “benefits” of a shotgun can be mimicked with most other calibers, and the weapons for those calibers are easier to aim. The classic Democrat myth of shotguns being the best home defense weapon is manipulative and from a position of ignorance.
