According to the medical examiner's report one of the intruders died before he even hit the ground with 7 of the 9 pellets landing in his brain and the other two went through his neck. Respectfully disagree about shotguns. It’s actually the best tool for the majority of normal citizens. We’re talking about normal people not retired operators. Requires the least amount of training to be adequate, has the highest probability of one shot stops and with a good ammo choice the least chance of over penetration.
The likelihood of ever needing to use it are very slim. The likelihood of needing to be the marksman hero in a hostage situation in your home is virtually zero.

My wife has a cousin who is and has been in special forces for many years. He was in Afghanistan at the beginning and did many tours as a captain. His favorite up close weapon of choice was a mil spec shotgun.
Most home invasions end the moment the criminals have entered a protected home.
Usually 1 discharge of a firearm is enough to send them hightailing it for the door.
For a regular homeowner to be involved in a hostage situation is such a low low probability, almost non existent.
Professional door kickers yes, but as a farmer, we would greet any guests with our Remington 870 or Mossburg 590A-1 with warm #1buck.
Besides, the Mossburg sounds like a cannon going off in the outdoors, can't imagine what kind of reverb it would generate in my house. Even if I didn't wound a would be intruder, I'm sure he would be tone deaf for a while.
If you don't want any of the above to even have a chance of happening get yourself a couple a good dogs. No intruder will want to tangle with them and you will have a couple of head scratchers you can call friends and that will be loyal.

If I do roadside repairs like mail boxes, signs, etc... you can almost count on the land owners showing up. And yes, they usually have a rifle on hand with them. I have a very good relationship with them so they know what I'm up to. If things go down later this year with the election my piece of advice to you goons who live in the city thinking your going to take stuff from these farmers and cattlemen is turn around and go back to the ghetto you came from. Those farmers and ranchers will not hesitate to make a jig saw puzzle of your body if to threaten them or try to steal from them. So city scum bums you have been warned.

    Hello,
Just my 2 cents…for what it is worth.
    1. What is the percentage of home invasions where precision-hostage shots are needed ?
    2. 9mm will go through wall.
    3. At 10 steps or less, the spread of 00 is the size of a fist, thinking anything else is fantasy.
    4. If we talk about heart rate and shaky hands due to stress, choosing a tool that actually requires precision is illogical.
    5. Demonstrating the shortcomings of the shotgun for home defense with an inadequate shorty is bias. Especially since you ended up not showing the actual result on camera. An 870 youth model with reduce recoiled buckshot is a fantastic home defense tool utilizing gross motor skills, and is the best fight ending tool we have per round counts.
    6. I don’t want to “shoot all day” at the bad guy.

The problem I see with a shotgun is that it's too unwieldy. If you come around a corner and the BG sees you, one of his first instincts will be to grab the barrel and now you're in a life and death MMA match. Also you need both hands for it, whereas with a pistol you can use your free hand to slowly open doors and turn on lights etc. At the end of the day though, any gun that's ready to rock is a whole heck of a lot better than nothing!

  • @MagicPrepper
    @MagicPrepper Год назад +95

One of the reasons I prefer a handgun is that carbines, shotguns and PCC's all operate under the assumption that you'll have both hands available. For those with children, being able to carry or grab something while still having an effective weapon might make the decision for you.

      @Handcannon77 Год назад +1

Pretty simple solution...have both a handgun, and a rifle chambered in something like .300 blackout(ideally, obviously not practical for everyone). Its also important to note that it absolutely depends on the geometry and layout of your home though. If you have long hallways and a large house, or if you also live on a large plot of land with acreage you wish to defend, then a standard AR platform may be your preferred weapon, but either way you should still have a handgun on you as well. Personally I think having something like a p320 with a kit on it and a good scope is the most ideal home defense weapon for most people, and then you can have a standard handgun should you be in a situation where you dont have 2 hands free. Definitely not saying that people shouldnt also have a rifle, but I think for most people a handgun with a kit on it is going to be the most effective overall option despite requiring 2 hands to operate.

Kills me everytime... I dont know why no matter how many times this debate comes up a hostage situation is always the thing that comes up..... not every scenario is goin down in a hostage situation. Not every scenario is there goin to be 3 to 7 guys breaking in your house with or without body armor. Use what you're most comfortable with, use what works for your house. The weapon isnt nearly as much what matters as much as knowing how it will perform and how you will under stress. It comes down to training and testing whatever you plan to use. A man living in a 2 story house with a wife and six kids ain't gonna have the same thought process as a single dude just gettin out on his own or a single mom with a child or better yet a soldier who worked in a professional capacity over in Afghanistan....... it's time to end the fuckin argument and just be happy atleast people take it seriously enough to want and have firearms to defend their homes and loved ones.

I suppose I could carry a snub nose 38 because I probably wont encounter a hostage situation, an armed robbery with multiple dudes, a home invasion with 5 guys or some weirdo shooting up Walmart with and AR....but what if I do? Then my snubby is gonna have some serious shortcomings. So for me I ask myself, if I actually get into any armed encounter whatsoever, would I rather have a snubnose 38 with a short barrel, short sight radius, slow to reload, only 5 shots, etc or a Glock 19 with an extra mag? Same thing with home defense, I'd take a glock 19 over a shotgun any day because its way more versatile.

I dont care how many rounds your gun can hold, if you freeze up? Hesitate? and shit goes down? the amount of bullets dont matter if you dont hit the intended target. At the end of the day, I dont care if you use a single shot shotgun, or a full auto mp5sd. If you know what you're doin and know how to deploy it, THATS WHAT MATTERS. Although The Ford vs Chevy, Apple vs Pc, shotgun vs ( Fill in the blank ) for home defense arguments will never end , I disagree with the conclusion provided in this video. I’m not a special forces guy or nothing , just a retired LEO. I have investigated shootings both OIS and self defense and this topic is something I do have experience in. I challenge anyone to have someone wake them from a sound sleep abruptly at 0300, jump out of bed , get your weapon in hand and eyes focusing within seconds in a dark house. Most people bounce off of walls and run into stuff just trying to hit the head in that scenario. Try quickly getting an accurate sight picture in a dark hallway with your handgun in that same example. In a life and death situation where seconds count, coming from a sound sleep, the shotgun ( with a mounted light) is a solid choice. He lightly touched on the very important consideration of over penetration with his rifle but that issue deserves more thought especially in densely populated neighborhoods …kids etc in other bedrooms and is why the AR etc is personally not my first choice for home defense. I don’t consider the model shotgun used in the video as the best choice for anything other than something maybe fun to shoot. Ymmv

I go from shooting a near perfect expert score on the combat pistol course, to barely passing if I haven’t touched it since the last time I qual’d. But beyond the shooting part, so many aren’t prepared for the draw! And they don’t realize how dangerous a draw, especially from a conceal carry holster, can be! Danger to yourself, as well as anyone else. Can you do draw clean without snagging clothing? Without inducing a negligent discharge? Grabbing it so quickly you accidentally hit the mag release? I've definitely seen a lot of officers over my 30 years of active duty who could not shoot their assigned pistols very well. That is until a good NCO had coached them on proper grip, stance, aiming, and trigger control. I'm sort of joking and not really poking fun at all officers. Most often the pistol qual ranges were predominantly officers. So of course, I would have seen more officers struggle. However, the few junior enlisted and NCOs that had to qualify, did on average perform a lot better. I have always theorized that a possible reason for that is because almost all of the junior enlisted and NCOs actually were made to attend the PMI and training and paid attention to it. Whereas a lot of the officers managed to either skip that portion of training or didn't pay much attention to it. I absolutely agree that proficiency is developed through repetitive and current practice. The best marksmanship stats I've seen in units were those units that actually made everyone attend quality PMIs, identified those that needed additional training, and then coached firers during familiarization fire, and then conducted ranges where all firers were able to first shoot under direct supervision from proficient coaches. At some point, a lot of units stopped doing some of the old-time-tested training measures for rifles too. Things like the old dime/washer drills or using the shadowbox to teach trigger squeeze and sight picture, sight alignment.

Agree with some points here but a shotgun with buckshot don’t spread that much at close ranges. Having trained with shotguns and being proficient with them they generally will pattern about 1 inch per yard. (That’s with shitty ammo). Home defense ranges they’re closer to a rifle than what most people believes. At 10 paces you can easily do a hostage situation with a shotgun and it has been before in real life. Even though it’s extremely unlikely. Get whichever weapon you feel comfortable with and shoot it a lot and train with it. Whether it be a pistol, rifle, shotgun or PCC just be proficient with it. They will all over penetrate so know what’s behind your target and use angles to avoid shooting in a direction you don’t want your rounds going into.

    Chadd,
First and foremost merry Christmas and God's peace to you and yours! For those who read this post I must make it clear that I'm using my wives account to address this important subject matter as I'm breaking my general rule as not to comment on matters on social media and don't have an account. I worked for 36 yrs for a city municipality as an LEO. I served for over 16 yrs on a SWAT team and was also a firearms instructor. Granted I don't have the combat experience that Chadd has but did survive a few dust ups one of which involved the use of a Smith and Wesson mdl 3000 12 ga. This weapon is almost the exact clone of a Rem. 870 (pump gun). The engagement took place 08/05/1993 at 1640 hrs. in a very busy area of town. Civilians in the background and all around the area where the shot was taken. The distance was 8 yds. and the ammo was old school Federal 00 buckshot. Note in previous training we/I practiced surgical shots with the shotgun-yes read that again. Open choke surgical shots as every cruiser was equipped at that time (mandatory) with a 12 gauge. We used the shotgun for many years as the weapon of choice for the point man for high risk warrant service on the team as well and at least two of these weapons were cut down 870's that resembled something a biker 1% would use or actually what Remington and Mossberg now offer. I mention this as it relates to the use of this type of weapon for close quarters work which is exactly what takes place inside a residence. I was taught to extend both arms and point shoot this weapon and was surprised at how fast and accurate this system was/is. Remember patterns are about 1 inch per yard. This was before Federal came out with the controlled flite wad in 00 which is superior and something everyone with a shotgun should have for personal defense rounds. OK the 12 ga used 8/5/93 had a fixed wood standard butt stock, no sights; I placed part of the barrel off target into the brick wall that the decedent was using as cover and support for his carbine, knowing that the pellets that hit the wall would travel down it and strike the decedent. Note there were civilians in vehicles behind the decedent who was moments before getting ready to engage them. All of the pellets fired struck the decedent...solid, no pass through's from fringe hits. I could account for each pellet which at times still blows my mind as even as writing or reflecting on this l recall seeing the pellets impact. The decedent was leaning into his position of cover with the muzzle of his weapon pointed at me and leaning into it with his left foot forward and right foot back. I had been moving fast left to right to avoid his tracking me but ran out of room (brick wall) and took the shot. Two of the pellets broke bones in his left arm and continued into his left chest, remaining 6 went thru his upper thoracic cavity-about an 8 inch pattern. The decedent dropped his weapon and turned almost 180 degrees, fell to the ground with his feet and buttocks towards me. He did not get a shot off. The muzzle of his weapon (chambered in 7.62x39mm) fell muzzle pointing directly at me however as he lay his hands were over 2 feet from the weapon.
Of course I know that I'm still in this world as a direct result from the Grace of God. I should have been lying on that sidewalk as well. Point; at close range I can't think of a better weapons choice. I could have resolved the situation with a handgun but how many shots would the decedent got off? Body armor I was wearing at the time would have assisted the 7.62 round in upsetting and tumbling after it struck and penetrated the vest...I had the option of taking the time to unlock the trunk to access a HK 33 or an MP5 but the shotgun was upfront in the rack and while driving hs I loaded it up and got ready for the engagement (time was crucial).
Yes one can surgically shoot with a shotgun. Practice holding partially off the target with the barrel on hostage type shots. For open or cylinder chokes with old style buck shot rounds 1" per yard is the general rule for pattern. With the same choke and the newer generation (Federal Controlled Flight Wad) rounds make the shotgun a whole different animal. Lot's of options for rounds/projectiles as well make the shotgun very useful, slug, buck, steelshot, lead, ect with varying charges and projectile size.
A few yrs back I picked up one of those firearms that's not a pistol or long gun in the Mossberg version and added a brace. I hadn't retired quite yet and went to the range with it and mooched some Federal Controlled Flight wad 00. At 15 yds I could not believe how tight the groups were. Think about how large your avg. hallway or room is and keep this in mind when practicing with your shotgun and then ask yourself will a shotgun work? For me the answer is obvious. (Mine is actually 3 feet away while I write this).
    Take care,
    Jeff
PS Chadd I do enjoy your posts and point of view.

The main advantage with a shotgun is that you don't need to make precision shots. Yeah, if a bad guy has one of your kids has a hostage your screwed, but honestly you're more likely to die by a meteor. Yeah if you are a SEAL or Delta who goes on hostage rescue missions, but most people don't rescue hostages. I agree a stockless shotgun sucks for home self defense though. Pistols suck for home self defense. They are many cases of men taking 5 or more shots from a pistol and keep fighting.

Don’t sleep on the CZ Scorpion, either. I have one of the s2 series with hollow points and can’t recommend it enough. It works for soft-targets and anytime I take new shooters out, women, or children; the Scorpion (along with my .22 lever action) are always the crowd favorite. Slap a light on it and a modesty priced red dot and you have a fine home defense set up. 30 rounds magazines are available and you don’t have the major concern of over penetration. I run some low recoil loads through mine and the missus loves it. CZ even released their new s3 series and with their newer AR style controls, it’s even more intuitive. The price point made more sense to me than the other options such as Banshee or MPX; and the ergonomics and reliability surpassed the Ruger from from the sources I gathered. Happy hunting with whatever you choose. Stay vigilant, stay safe!

I am not going to the concentration camp, I read Haralan Popov's biography and am familiar with the history of the Holocaust.

@@charlesmckinley29 The Aquariums of pyongyang is another good one but the Bible is the best for your soul. Merry Christmas to you too. Everyone needs to watch Eisenhower's Documentary on the Holocaust keeping in mind guns were taken away from the Jews before all rights and then life was extinguished. All by their own government, I am Native American and recognize parallels too, The U.S. government perpetrated the largest mass shootings of women and children in history. I remember that when they talk about taking guns away from law abiding citizens. History is important.

For someone who is not worried about a hostage and does not train then a shotgun is the beat option. Would i give my 84yr old mom a glock or carbine for home defense? No, a shotgun? Yep sure as hell would! That said you cannot make blanket statements to cover all situations.

Hell no I'm not giving my 90 yr old grandma a 12 ga w 3 1/2 mag's. But I absolutely would give her a PCC. Light recoil and insanely accurate. A 12 ga w 3 1/2 mags would probably dislocate her shoulder.

@@funkfarmer7125 think your going a bit overboard there. 12ga w/3.5 mags? Why not say a 10 ga with 3.5 TT shot?? There are plenty of other options to include shortly shells, 410, 20ga light recoil. All great options.
