    I often make this comment about Tom King's writing. He uses a lot of words to say very little. He uses a lot of flowery language making it seem smarter than it is, when you could sumarize a character's thoughts and still get the point across. I didn't like how this ended. Putting aside what is the cold blooded murder of Ruth's father, there's a point about half way involving a very obvious metaphor for racism and him being responsible for what amounts to a genocide. In my eyes he had lost the right to live at that point. I found it very middle of the road. If you know Kara Zor-El he just wrote a good Supergirl story. There's nothing ground breaking here.

  • @treymykel
    @treymykel 6 месяцев назад +1

    I mean I'm glad that you found some kind of enjoyment out of it but I didn't find any enjoyment out of it because it felt like a sloth and let's be honest the story was literally true grit just with Supergirl instead of Clint Eastwood like the fact that the story focused mainly on the side character then Supergirl it's kind of like well damn what was the point of this book you know yeah it had onions but for the most part it's just kind of a sloth and it's not even a good Supergirl story

  • @Moyeeshen2304

    Finally saw someone talk about a heavy word count in Tom King's writing. I think this is one of his main weaknest in his writing, if the story is good, people can ignore it maybe, but if the story is mid if not bad, this worsen the reading experience (Maybe that's why people hate it or love it).
    I think he actually try to use 'this narration is actually from a book' excuse in women of tomorrow, but sometimes I just speed read most of it just to have a minimum acknowledge.
    But I like his character study/relationship story if it done right, so it is still my personal recommandation tbh

    I gave up after issue 1 because I was bored with it. I don't really vibe with Evely's work here for one thing, but like you it's just the amount of verbiage that comes out of Ruthye's irritating gob that really made it feel tedious. I wasn't down for Kara's characterisation either.
    All the people I know who are big Supergirl fans absolutely despise this comic, without exception. Generally it's people who aren't fans of her who are the most receptive to it, I guess becuase they have no expectations? For that reason when Gunn announced the movie would be based on it they were pretty annoyed. I think it *could* make a decent movie but the screenplay writer would be wise to rethink how this story is told because having so much of the narrative rest on Ruthye and not Kara herself is an absolute non-starter - thank god you can't just put narration in movies (unless you've really gone wrong somewhere).

  • @A-man-ix4kz
    @A-man-ix4kz 6 дней назад

    I felt the final battle was a let down, and the characterization of Supergirl left much to be desired. My favorite version of Supergirl is the 2005-2011 comic Supergirl. She went through arguably worse than the stuff new 52 Supergirl did (which is who rebirth supergirl more or less is, unless you count her as a compilation of ALL canon Kara Zor Els because of the death metal DC comic event).
    Like I could and would have been more engaged if not for Woman Of Tomorrow Supergirl not being the main character in the comic bearing her name. She was not like the Supergirl I knew and loved, not fun, just serious and sullen. Now if they wanted to they could have sold me on Kara's depression if they brought up the fact that she was suffering from the combined trauma of multiple Kara Zor El comic eras. Meaning she lost Krypton and her people a grand total of 4 times (because 2005-2011 Kara lost her people twice). But they never bothered to really show much from Kara's perspective and it made the story ultimately rather... hollow.
    Did not really have much of a point. A much better comic and far shorter you may want to review is Supergirl's 2 part comic in Future State where her story ends... literally.
    At least that comic actually has meaning and a lesson to ponder after.
    Not so with the hollow Woman Of Tomorrow by Tom King.

I thought I was the only one in the world who didn't enjoy the Immortal Hulk as much as I thought I would until I found your video on it and you raised a lot of the same issues I had with it too. I have read so many glowing reviews of this book and have had it in my cart 3 times. And removed it 3 times. And now I’m glad it did. Mind you when the Deluxe edition is announced I’ll probably get seduced again. But looking at your screen grabs, there’s an awful lot of speech bubbles and narrative going on - it looks a bit like a transcript of a poor football commentary telling me what I’m already looking at. Hopefully I will remember this and resist again when the time comes.

    I fell asleep several times while reading this book 😅Ruth's narration voice was interesting at first, but quickly became tedious to read and even got annoying at times. Overall, I though this story was just ok - the main plot was "meh", but some of the adventures Kara & Ruth have on their journey were interesting to read, as well as how their friendship was developing. Beautiful art though.

I don't even think the voice of the narrator stayed the same throughout the book; at the beginning she sounded like she'd stumbled out of a golden age Thor book, but by a couple of issues in she sounded like an extra from Firefly 😂 I enjoyed the book on the whole, but it would have been much better paced if they halved the narration.

    It’s always interesting to see how different people can have different takes on the exact same piece. I liked the story and polished it off in one day. You’re right in that I’m not as versed in Supergirl lore like I am with Superman.
    I *really* liked that King wrote a story that can be uniquely Kara’s and not a retread of Superman’s villains like Arrowverse Supergirl writers did. I liked that King created villains unique to Kara. I don’t know if King created the Brigands or not, but there are lots of uses for them in the future. Perhaps Terra Man can find a new purpose and origin there?
    I loved the fresh take on Argo City. I loved the direction of the story and the relationship of the setup to the ending.
    I didn’t mind the narration. It felt like a fantasy prose story and stretched the form a touch. In fact, I’m reminded of Gaiman’s writing of the Sandman. This may have a very Vertigo feel to it. Certainly, Morpheus was written as the driving force of the story if not always the main character much as we see Kara portrayed.
    Although I wonder if King wrote Ruthye’s story first and then inserted Kara later changing parts of the story to fit the new edition..?
    I appreciate your review. It was honest and relevant to what you wanted from the story. I picked it up because of the hype and Gunn’s admission of its relevance to the Supergirl he wanted to portray. I’d read more Supergirl stories like this.

      Thank you for the kind words, and I'm glad you had a good time when you read this book. That's an interesting aspect I didn't consider about Krem being a villain specific to Kara, and does add to it being her story. But I think you might have a point too about King writing it as Ruthye's story first and retroactively adding Kara, but sometimes things happen that work out better and I can't imagine how this story would have been if it was just Ruthye's journey.
      I'm reviewing King's Batman run at the moment, that was another one I was confused on, hopefully you check out that video too! Have a good weekend!

I have heard story points from other who read it through, that I also think are completely out of character, which makes me feel this is another indie story written in advance and then simply skinned with the SuperGirl brand. I still advocate to Red Daughter as a much better idea to use to make a Supergirl Movie.
