7artisans 35mm f1.2 mark ii new 170USD. Vintage rendering with double gauss, planar build. Better than all my vintage lenses from Leica, Pentax, Konica and Olympus
Looks a lot like my adapted Olympus 50mm 1.8F Zuiko glass. Only difference is the Olympus glass is around $50-$150 depending on what lenses you want. That looks awesome, but its absolutely expensive for results that can be easily mimicked by lenses of yesteryear. 80s Zuiko glass is very sharp on subject with a very impressive bokeh across the whole range which is very very durable and high end. Now the Viltrox 75mm 1.2F, that's worth every penny of $539 when it comes to modern offerings that truly stand apart! I'd recommend you review one!
Reminds me a lot of my Takumar 50/1.4(8e), nice to be able to buy something NEW like this rather than risk the used market quality. Good on LLL for doing this.
Very Interesting! I've never looked at the Primoplan, but I've so many great things about Meyer Optik. Ill have to check out a copy 👍 Thanks for the comment!
I filmed with the speed panchro pl with my Leica SL2-S and it blows me away about the softness and details in the pictures. Cook reinvented the panchros : CP3. Can't wait to test them. ;)
It comes in Leica M mount. Unfortunately I believe the flange distance of EF will not allow you to adapt an M mount lens. There are affordable adapters for the new RF mount from canon, due to the reduced distance to the sensor.
I bought this for my Zcam F8. The footage will blow you away. I love this lens. I had an old Russian Oct 19 which was a knock off of Cooke lens/ But this is a recreation. Very true to the original except this one can do full frame not just super35. Buy it you will not regret it.
Hope you are will Michael! So far the lens has still stayed on my camera daily. I like the weight and balance on my sony. The lens can be difficult to work with especially wide open, but I do find I really enjoy the texture the lens imparts to the image. I am constantly adjusting the aperture to avoid over blooming the image, or adjusting how the vignetting is effecting the frame, and all the fine adjustments sometimes leads me to miss moments which can be frustrating. Overall I am very involved with the process of capturing images when using the LLL, and the difficulties turn into creative opportunities to adjust how I am approaching a scene or situation.
@@Plaughrey I've not found anyone on RUclips who talked about the focus breathing on this lens. Definitely would appreciate it if you could show it or talk about it. 👍
Hi Patrick. Thanks for the great review. Been playing around with my lens and I noticed something odd. Not sure if it's my copy or if it is normal as they say. If you go above f8 I notice a blue haze in the center of the frame? I reached out to Light Lens and this is what they told me: This is a normal phenomenon with original SPII as the internal reflection has caused the lens to have diffraction under low T-Stops. It is advise to not shoot SPII under F8. It was only very recently that we discovered this phenomenon. Either our production and distribution network was not aware of this phenomenon due to the lens usually being shot under f/8. Do you get this haze on your lens over f8? Thanks Kevin!
70 mm minimum focus is NOT typical for 50 mm, maybe for really old vintage lenses. Even 40 year old good vintage lenses can get closer. Thanks for sharing, though!
True, and upon watching it the second time you actually mention it being typical for rangefinder cameras. Although good lens makers like Voigttländer offer 50 mm minimum focus distance.
@@apocryphal_man most, if not all M mount lenses are .7 meter minimum focus distance for M systems. Not a knock on the maker at all - fact of how the rangefinder mechanism works. So, even if you have an M lens that an focus at .5m, it won't be done via the rangefinder, only the EVF.
That’s not really a small lens if you’re on about M lenses. Sold this immediately for a profit (of course) since I got mine direct from China. My Summilux does better and still more compact.
I totally get it, it isn't a perfect lens and is not a great fit for everyone. That being said a soft mist filter will never recreate the optical characteristics (both good and bad) What matters most is creating and capturing moments the feels best to YOU! I will always recommend save your money for experiences and document those with what you have. At the end of the day a lens is just a tool; it's the world around you, and your experiences within it that will always be more valuable. 🙌
Would have appreciated if you had pointed out that this LLL lens actually doesn't look like Cooke. It has vintage character but does it actually replicate that Cooke look? I don't think so. It's just a story/claim that they have made up. Most 'real' vintage lenses will give you better optical quality and character at a cheaper price.
At the end of the video I do admit that I've never used an authentic Cooke, so my opinion does not hold a whole lot of weight in this matter 😂 That being said, I did have a few conversations with David Chen from the North American devision of LLL, and we talked at length about how they approached the optical design. They have an original 1940s Cooke Speed Panchro II in their lab, and went through a pain staking process to get as close of match as possible to the optical design and coatings to the original.
@@Plaughrey All that sounds great but how do I know they succeeded in doing what they set out to do? Why don't they have someone shoot with the original Cooke and this lens side by side and show the results? Without that it sounds like a marketing gimmick to extract $$$ from vintage lens lovers.
Is that the case. I will be interested if you can get me a Leica Elcan below $200. Have you shoot with both to come up with the above rant about this video.

I own this lens, and I also happen to own the complete Cooke SP3 6-lens set. I can guarantee 100% that this 'replica' wannabe Cooke doesn’t come close to what an actual Cooke lens looks like. Sorry, but it’s just not worth it."
It is soft wide open, and challenging to use in different lighting scenarios for sure. That being said it's been a few months now and it hasn't really left my camera. So far its been a nice fit for me!
@@Plaughrey Sure. I just felt it necessary to note my opinion. Because it really just seems like you're selling an overpriced item to beginners. This should be $200 max. A savvy shooter could pay $15 (+adapter cost) for a similar feeling vintage 50mm at their local garage sale. Blowing my mind that this is listed for $1050. I understand that it's your tool and you like it (totally fair). But woof! I wouldn't feel good recommending it.
@@backyardwindow great point! I did not realize that the video came off as a recommendation for beginners. Not who I was aiming for at all. When I got started in photography I did exactly as you said. I picked up as many inexpensive lenses as I could from flea markets or vintage shops and adapted to my camera for as little money as I could manage, and it taught me so much about photography early on. I’ll be sure to specify an experience level in my recommendation in future videos, or maybe include a little bit more about my journey to help give context.
@@Plaughrey I think your video is perfectly fine in explaining your own finding on this lens. I have not used this LLL lens and the one I have used is LLL elcan. Yes, it is around $700 not really suited to everyone's budget and can be more expensive than some of the vintage lens. I think from my experience vintage lens ( I have four M42 mount lenses, 3 Nikon AI-s) and also own Voitglander 58mm F1.4 Ai-s version, I think LLL elcan has its own unique characters that endear itself to one who have used it, it is not perfect like some of the autofocus lens we see from the major makers, but it held its own against the other manual focus lens from the other makers. Just a note a lot of savvy shooter also use this lens or LLL's other lenses.
Those are some beautiful images, I love the bokeh and blooming. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for the kind comments Bryan, glad you enjoyed it 🙌

Takumar 50/1.4, 8 elements or not, has very noticeable green outline on bokeh balls, which Light Lens Lab's doesn't.
