Not only was that the best Elvis performance.....but it was also the best performance of any other artist before, then, and even now.....it still can not be topped.
He felt every word. They said when he finished the song he was a wreck and curled up in the fetal position and cried his eyes out. This was a tribute to MLK and he and Elvis were friends
This is elvis's favorite song because he sang this song with so much passion and emotion and so powerful with words that he truly believed in he wanted equality for everyone he had no hate in him he was the most humble and generous person ever
Yes, this performance is very hard to beat. Even by Elvis himself. Elvis had so many great performances. This could? be his best. But there are others of his.
This was Elvis's most heartfelt performance according to the people who knew him that were there who said that when he finished singing, he was so emotional that he came back to his dressing room, laid down on the floor, and cried!
Elvis songs make me emotional. Especially religious songs & songs that are trying to bring all races together, like GOD INTENDED. HE MADE US ALL TO BE BROTHERS. They are are just as relevant today as when he first sang them in the 60s
Elvis was watching news footage of Dr. Kings funeral service on television before he came out to perform this song. One of the greatest moments in TV history. This special would be televised for years.
He was good friends with MLK and use to donate to his civil rights movement and he took it hard when he passed away. MLK and JFK and Elvis all wanted the same thing in America and Elvis lead the way to open doors. R.I.P to all of them we lost them all way too soon.
If I can dream.. this is what we all need RIGHT NOW! He was and still to this day is the best human being that ever walked this planet. This song hits my heart all the time and makes me cry.... Much Love!
One of if not the best liver performance in the 20th century! Lyrically and vocally touches your soul. Elvis poured everything into that! I have a Dream, Let that Dream come true, NOW!
Elvis was so moved after this performance he fell to his knees and weeped. He swore he'd never again record a song or make a movie that doesn't have meaning for him.
Hi guys, love your reactions to Elvis, I've been an Elvis mega fan since I could walk, saw him 3 time's in concert, the best times of my life, there will never be another like him on this Earth, and I'm so proud to see the younger generation discover this phenomenal man, Elvis. Would you react to Elvis singing Walk a mile in my shoes and "it's impossible" Thank you and God bless. TCb 1935
Powerful as by an artist standing for his own beliefs, against his handler, manager and the establishment. Nowadays the establishment has absorbed the hot button issues and doubled down on the divisions. The people's only chance is standing together!
His greatest performance hands down! The message back then is as relevant today, if not more than ever. He supported Dr. King and his dream of a better world. He had a copy of MLK's March For Freedom album which is in his personal record collection at Graceland.
again Mike Mikesell! how did he support The Late great M.L.K.? did he march in the streets? did he ever use his microphone to speak of racial in equality?
@@bwana-ma-coo-bah425How did he support? Elvis believed actions were louder than words unlike most attention seeking celebrities. Politicians only act like they care to gain support come election time. People who actually care about something do more than just speak about it or protest. Elvis wanted to march with both James Brown and Janis Joplin, but Parker wouldn't let him. He made him start filming Viva Las Vegas instead. But Elvis helped to fund the Civil Rights movement during the 60s and 70s by donating money to the cause. One of the groups he funded and supported was MLK's Southern Christian Leadership Conference. He even received a civil rights honorary award for his contributions to the cause in Atlanta in 1973 (I believe) by the NAACP. There's pics of him holding the award and it's on display at Graceland. Told when to stand when to sit what to eat what to sing and when to shit. Thanks for confirming that for me. So he donated money to the cause. So he was a check book warrior. You do know that the colonel stopped those donations, don't you? And in a lots of cases the colonel even went and asked for the checks to be returned. They did not want Elvis to do this song but he chose to do it anyway. It was dedicated to Martin Luther King. After the show he went backstage and curled up in a fetal position and cried. He poured his heart out into that song and wanted people to get the message.
There's alot of meaning in the words of that song, it was written about 50 years ago and about those times , and it still fits today's times. Very hard to choose the best song when it comes from Elvis..Even though this one had a deep meaning, which was in honor of MLK and Robert Kennedy..But we all can say " This Was Fantastic!!! Thank You.
It was actually for MLK JR and Robert Kennedy’s assassination .. JFKs brother .. because Robert and MLKs were closer at that time . But Elvis did this song and locked himself in his room for days . He was devastated about both men cause both men wanted equality for everyone .. Elvis didn’t understand why other people were against equality.. Elvis grew up poor and partly in Memphis .. he knew how it was and wanted to change things as well w his music
Thank you I try to tell others with reaction the same thing! Elvis was more than a sex symbol and talented singer he believed all men were created equal
Elvis fought to have this song on his special you can see the emotion in his eyes after this performance on his special many told of him backstage curled up crying
I would check out "American Trilogy" live from Hawaii. "Trying to get to you" from the 68' comeback special is also an excellent choice. They're sitting in a circle on stage .
To my understanding the background singers also left the stage in tears. Elvis never performed this song on stage again ; although he record it. He said from this song forward he wouldn't record songs that didn't mean something to him. He still sang the old ones that made him famous but his sound became "grown up" and refined.
Thank You both for this beautiful reaction. I`ve been an Elvis fan for decades and I`m always so glad when non-Elvis fans take the time and are open enough to appreciate even just a tiny little bit of his genius. In my opinion, Elvis had many fabulous performances, non-Elvis fans just don`t know enough of his work. But I must admit that the story behind this song really shows who Elvis really was. How he cried when Dr. King was assassinated and how deeply he felt the need to express his pain. He was special in so many ways that one single song just can`t say much about him and can`t do him justice. To truly understand why he still lives in the hearts of so many and why he earned the title "King", one has to go down the rabbit hole and it`s very understandable that many people just don`t have the time and energy to go there. I wish everybody A Happy New Year 2022. Don`t let anybody and/or anything frighten or discourage you and/or take away your dreams, no matter what!! Friendly greetings from Slovenia :)
@DeeandNish- This is a great performance for sure. I reccomend that you react to Elvis cover song that was originally done by Frank Sinatra called My way Aloha 1973 live performance. This performance is just as good as If I can dream. Also You gave me a mountain 1973 Aloha from Hawaii. You can't go wrong with either song.
