It was performed it in November 1968 as part of what became to be known as the 68 Comeback Special. Originally slated to be a Christmas special, Elvis didn’t want to sing Christmas songs. If I Can Dream was his protest/statement song in response to the assassinations of JFK, MLK and RFK as well as resistance towards the Civil Rights Movement.

This was the original mic drop moment. Elvis was supposed to sing a Christmas song. He told the network that he was going to sing this song and they would not regret it. People in the studio said he walked on stage dropped this all time masterpiece on the American public in one take, turned around and walked off. It was said that he went back to his dressing room and broke down and cried, he literally put every drop of emotion that he had into this performance.

I grew up on Elvis's music. Check out "In the Ghetto". He got a lot of hate for it from all races. But what he managed to do was bring attention to white folks the hardships of black folks in poverty level communities.
He could sing anything from rock, to blues to gospel to country. But his favorites had a bluesy feel to them because he grew up sneaking into the black bars around Mississippi. He loved and respected the black community and he knew at a young age that it wasn't right how they were treated. Elvis was a good man with a huge heart. He was also extremely generous with his money.
When he first came out, teen girls were in love with him, teen boys wanted to be him, and parents hated him because he gyrated his hips and made their daughters have bad thoughts LOL. He was even banned from having his music playing on stations around the US.

Elvis Presley was a musical explorer. He always sought to blend various styles of music into his recordings, which was a revolutionary thing to do during the 1950s and 1960s. In the late-1960s, Elvis Presley wanted to return to his musical roots. He made recordings in Memphis, Tennessee with musicians and singers from the budding Soul music genre. This song stylistically is a good example of what he was doing in the recording studio at that time.

This song was a tribute to Martin Luther King, MLK was shot and killed 8 miles from Graceland in Memphis. Elvis was friends with MLK and his death affected him. The biggest take away for me listening to his music is his natural passion for the FEELING that the music brings. Vegas still loves & misses you King 👑

"virtually impossible to pigeonhole." Elvis Presley's three-octave vocal range was exceptional, 'very narrowly all at once a tenor, baritone, and bass'."

Elvis was raised in an integrated way--young friends were black, because that's the neighborhood he grew up in, swimming in the crick and snacking on apples. Shopped for clothes where the black community shopped 'cause he loved the look. And sang in the black choir into the late hours after white church was over. There's many reasons why he sounds bluesy!!! I love him more now that I've found out these things about him than I did when I loved his music. And his folks must've taught him right, not prejudiced like so much of the South.

James Brown was the king of soul and Elvis was considered to be the king of rock and roll.
James and Elvis were actually very close friends. After Elvis died James did a tribute song for Elvis called , James brown singing love me tender tribute to Elvis. James attended Elvis's funeral and sat by his casket for four hours after the service was over. James called Elvis his soul brother.

This was at a time in America when the country was experiencing the civil rights movement and the war in Vietnam. These were the two things on every bodies mind. The country was truly divided for the first time since world war two. This is Elvis's tribute to Dr. King but it truly touches on how people were struggling with the events they saw on the news every night. You mentioned a blues sound but I really believe it's his gospel roots coming forward. Elvis took us to church with this one, believed in what it said and he left it all on the stage.

This is Elvis's tribute to MLK! He was a great supporter of MLK and was devastated when he was killed! Check out "Elvis and the Black Community" documentary here on YT. It will give you insight into who Elvis was. He grew up in a poor black neighborhood. He went to an all black church as a kid & sang in the choir! Remember this was in the south during segregation! Elvis sang a lot of blues songs..lol. Elvis was called the King of R & R! He never liked the title...it was what other called him. He was a very humble man...& very generous.
