Elvis' manager told him not to perform this song because it's too controversial. Elvis told him the only way he won't perform it is over his dead body. LONG LIVE THE KING!
I hope you understand how exciting it is for people like me who have been Elvis fans since the mid '50s to see you being in shock over his voice. Elvis is one of the best singers that has ever lived. He was also a fabulous entertainer. There is a reason he is called "The King". He had a great voice & could sing anything whether it was ballads, gospel or rock.
And that's exactly why he's underrated... people don't know he could sing like that. The media made him out to be a caricature based on the last year of his life and horrible Elvis imitators. Unless you grew up listening to him and watching his concerts and TV specials, you wouldn't know just how great he was.
As a 63 year old white man in England, you have me in tears with your honest and inciteful reaction and it's not because of Elvis's performance which is sublime, but YOUR true feelings.....thank you! x
The thing about Elvis is that his persona got to big so people overlook his talents! For me the best vocalist ever and reason why: he mastered all genres of music, he could take a great song and make it greater, only artist to be in Rock'n roll, Country and Gospel hall of fame. And last his voice control was out of this world! Like they said in the movie men in black, Elvis didn't die, he went home 😂
Elvis always looked so spent after singing a song lol It was because he literally poured his heart and soul into each and every song he sang. I am surprised he never passed out on stage!
You're right, Elvis was phenomenal! Look how you were mesmerized by this performance. No dancing around. No fireworks. Just Elvis singing. That is greatness. Loved your reaction.
Elvis loved gospel music - they say they played gospel music all night long. He won 3 Grammys for his gospel music. Yes he is underrated. I have been listening to him since I was a kid and never get tired of hearing his voice. When he died, I cried and could not believe it. This song needs to be out today. He sang with such compassion. It took a toll on him singing this song. Waltet Earl Brown wrote this song.
Great commentary and Analysis. And you are 💯% on point that Elvis is actually "underrated". And something else about Elvis that no one talks about is he didn't just talk the talk with songs like this .. he walked the walk too. Regarding his legacy, that is probably one of the most unrecognized things about Elvis was his Humanity. He beat up a racist at the front gates of Graceland a year before this recording in 1967. A bigot named Troy Ivy was hurling racial slurs, when Elvis asked him to stop and the man continued, so Elvis tapped him on the chin...(so to speak lol). EP sent the guy running back for his car. Elvis was laughing - "that'll teach him not to come round here talking like that in the future". I've known about this for many years. But most people I've talked to, including Elvis historians, have no clue about it. He stood with the black members of his group when they were dealing with racism. They said how much it meant to them that Elvis had their backs. He also called out a number of people around him throughout the years on their bigotry when he witnessed it. I've been reading commentary regarding Elvis for decades. *Most of our pop-culture talking heads NEVER talk about THIS Elvis Presley* . It has bothered me for years that so many that has so much to say (or write) about Elvis (and this includes many Elvis historians for that matter) have ignored these important things. (Oh, they'll do it with *other* artists from that era...give them credit beyond the music, talking about the other positive things they stood for, or were about. But when comes to EP, it's like they don't want to give Elvis' humanity that credit, for some strange reason. Historians just keep overlooking things like I mentioned above). Says more about these "HISTORIANS" and our Culture .... than it says about Elvis. Anyway, again great break-down from you. I just wanted to add Elvis not only sang & embraced this song message, but he also stood on it's words. We say *actions* speak louder than words sometimes, well lot of people forget Elvis' *Actions* spoke volumes too. Always enjoy thoughtful commentary with reactions - (to any artist, not just Elvis reactions). Great job. Keep 'em coming.
They don't want to give him credit because he was bringing people together and just like with MLK, there are some major forces who don't want that. They continue to try to divide us!
@Jay Viviane Just so you know, I love your comment. Everything you have said is true. People need to be enlightened about Elvis' role in aiding the civil rights movement. I was so very fortunate to have seen Elvis in live concerts 3 times before his untimely death. He was truly the greatest entertainer that I ever witnessed in a live concert. He really was there for the audience. Each concert was an experience! Thank you so much for your wonderful comment. 🙂
Elvis is called the king for many reasons, and his regal voice has often been imitated but never duplicated. He did sing gospel in fact he grew up singing gospel in the black churches of Tupelo Mississippi, he loved gospel and its influence is in a LOT of his songs if you listen to the right ones. Elvis recorded over 700 songs in his life, had many gold and platinum records etc etc. in fact theres a room in Graceland with walls full of Gold records and music awards, he is the only entertainer to be in all four music halls of fame.
It`s funny that you say that "They don`t show this side of Elvis". We, his fans have always known. And there`s a bunch of us out here. Nobody, and I mean NOBODY, becomes famous like him for nothing. People just don`t dig deeper into stuff. But when they do, they soon realize that they are going down the rabbit hole. Elvis is sooo much more than just a singer or entertainer! Thanks for your great reaction and friendly greetings from Slovenia :)
I enjoyed watching your reaction, I love it when young people get to see just how great he sang! He put his heart and soul into everything he sang! No auto tune just his great talent! We were given a gift from God when we were given this man!
He never sang this song again. I love to see young people discovering Elvis. There will never be another like him. Great reaction. Check out American Trilogy, I’ll Remember You, You Gave Me A Mountain, My Way, Fever … to name a few … from the 1973 Aloha From Hawaii concert (the one with the lei around his neck). It was the first concert broadcast via satellite and was seen by more than a billion people all over the world. That’s billion with a “B.” Also keep in mind there was no auto tune back in the day. Other live performances to react to … Bridge Over Troubled Water, Just Pretend, How Great Thou Art.
Elvis was a great singer even these other singers were born. That is why they don't know him.,but the other countries knows him.he was a popular in Europe and Australia
Sad that his manager destroyed all enjoyment of it with his financial Abuse still surprised he was done for murder giving he drove Elvis to an early grave.
I always love to see how Elvis shocks people , who haven't heard all the different types of music he does ..and true he deserves more credit for his vocal rage. This was a great Elvis reaction vid 😎💯
NGL all I really knew of Evils for years and years was the cringey meme shit of him in his fat ridiculous phase, but yooooo I didn't know he actually had this much soul before I saw the movie and then looked up this performance. Consider me one of the shocked mfers lol.
Underappreciated? By whom? I've always heard great performers, musicians and critics, who have substance in the world, praising Elvis as the best. I think those are the opinions that count, not Joe down the street. There are many world-class singers who state Elvis was their influence. I think to say "...the most underappreciated vocalist OF ALL TIME." is just a throw-away, cliched, line without substance.
Elvis is the King of Rock' I remember this ' Elvis Live' "i just entered High Scool' everyone in high school, like me couldn't wait for this incredible historical moment ' ❤️
That’s a very astute observation about Elvis. The iconic imagery that comes up with him, the clothes and jewelry the limos the jet planes the gold records, Cadillacs the hair all overshadow that he was also the greatest male American vocalist.
Lo externo de elvis , ropa , pelo etc eran parte de su estilo propio estilo imitado pero jamas igualado , pero el don estaba dentro de esa caja toraxica , como se dice " el don estaba alli "
Sung live and in 1 take! This song was written especially for Elvis, just after the King Assasination for this special. He was a strong supporter of Civil Rights, growing up in Tupelo MS, and Memphis with an incredible black blues and gospel influence. Elvis could sing ANYTHING, and made over 700 recordings of EVERY GENRE except hip-hop and rap, which were after his time!
I always cry, when I hear him singing this song. We were full of hope the world would be changing, after the cruelfully war - and than Martin Luther King and the Kennedys were assinated. I saw never my Mother cry, but in this time she did. And we are not Americans. I think he was nearly not be able to sing, so he shouted his sadness out - therefore his singing there was so epic. After the song, I heard, he broke down backstage and cried. Love from Austria 🇦🇹
I always have a tear in my eye as well. Such a moving performance. I've just watched the DVD I have, the special features show multiple takes..they are all excellent but this one was extra special.
I hear you! I'm from Australia and my Mother was distraught when MLK and JFK were assassinated. I was 9 years old and I cried then and even now whenever I hear Elvis sing "In the Ghetto." My granddaughter is now 9 and recently asked her mother "Why did black people have their own toilets and why did white people have their own shopping malls?" My daughter told her about how the world can be so unfair to some people. She told her about Emmeline Pankhurst (the women's suffragette) and about Martin Luther King, and they listened to parts of the "I have a dream" speech. After MLK says "We can never be satisfied as long as the Negro is the victim of the unspeakable horrors of police brutality" my 9-year-old granddaughter said to her mother, "That's so sad Mum because I don't think the world has changed for them very much at all." Sadly, I think she's right.
I always have chills when I hear/see this performance but to see YOU watching him and reacting to Elvis not only singing the heck out of that song, but FEELING it, actually brought tears to my eyes. It’s great to see young people still appreciate the phenomenon that was Elvis ❤️
How can Elvis Presley not be in any top 10 list. The power, range and feel of his voice in, in my opinion, untouchable. To me he is the greatest singer who ever lived. I honestly can't think of anyone who is better. Sam Cooke would be the closest and just quietly how can Sam not be very, very high in that top 10 list. I love Otis Redding, but Sam Cooke had him done cold as a pure singer. And so did Elvis. I honestly think that people who don't really rate him really haven't listened to him. Or at least, they haven't listened to the right songs.
WE ALL NEED TO PLAY THIS SONG ON AIR TODAY , BRING IT BACK FOR THE YOUNG GENERATION, POWERFUL 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 BRILLIANT ELVIS 🎤 THANK YOU FOR PLAYING IT 🙏🏾GOD BLESS ALL 🙏🏾
I've subscribed in hopes of watching you discover Elvis's extraordinary talent. A little background info: he didn't have any formal music training. He not only sang many different genres of music (from the very beginning of his career) but also played several instruments by ear, arranged music, hand-picked his band and back-up singers and directed them with his body movements. He recorded 769 songs and is in these Music Halls of Fame: Rock 'N Roll, Country, Rhythm & Blues, Gospel, and Rockabilly. Gospel was his favorite. Luciano Pavarotti said "Elvis can sing like me, but I can't sing like him". An Elvis quote: "I wish I could play every instrument. I wish I knew every song".
Elvis was in a class by himself. He sang Country Rock and Roll. Blues and Gospel. He did it all. We don't need anyone to tell us he can sing. All he has to do is open his mouth and it speaks for him. TCB
Elvis is like the forever pop/rock culture icon version of Disney. I have two tattoos in honor of him. ❤️ I love that he was from the south, poor, but filled with the American DREAM!!!!

Elvis is the complete package. The voice of an Angel
And the body of a Greek God. : o )
Elvis was not only the greatest singer,he was the greatest.
He grew up in the ghetto. He learned to sing in the choir of a local church. He has several gospel albums
Actually I think it was a African American Church in Tupelo Mississippi . He loved to sing with them. And they loved that little kid.
@@tinafranklin1585 It was still a local church.
He lived in the black section of Tupelo and then in the ghetto in Memphis. Went to black churches in both.
@@thebrazilianatlantis165 wow. No wonder he knows so much about the culture and he related to them.
@@tinafranklin1585 it was
And that's exactly why he's underrated... people don't know he could sing like that. The media made him out to be a caricature based on the last year of his life and horrible Elvis imitators. Unless you grew up listening to him and watching his concerts and TV specials, you wouldn't know just how great he was.
That's why reactions are important
😅Anybody that never saw him perform live better shut their mouth
ELVIS grew up with the Gospel music, it was his favourite.
As a 63 year old white man in England, you have me in tears with your honest and inciteful reaction and it's not because of Elvis's performance which is sublime, but YOUR true feelings.....thank you! x
He grew up in church his gospel is beautiful 😍
The thing about Elvis is that his persona got to big so people overlook his talents! For me the best vocalist ever and reason why: he mastered all genres of music, he could take a great song and make it greater, only artist to be in Rock'n roll, Country and Gospel hall of fame. And last his voice control was out of this world! Like they said in the movie men in black, Elvis didn't die, he went home 😂
Too big
I concur!
He is with the real king: Jesus Christ!
@@lorettaharris4377 at least Elvis really existed
Elvis has his own list, and he is the only one on it.
Excellent review, sir.
Elvis always looked so spent after singing a song lol It was because he literally poured his heart and soul into each and every song he sang. I am surprised he never passed out on stage!
I wish I could like your reaction twice! You have such visceral and truthful comments.
Hundred years from now....He will still be the KING. PERIOD!
Elvis is the GOAT....
He's the best of
all time
Half a century later and he still influences listeners of all ages, races and creeds. Glad you found the Elvis rabbithole.
You're right, Elvis was phenomenal! Look how you were mesmerized by this performance. No dancing around. No fireworks. Just Elvis singing. That is greatness. Loved your reaction.
Only and will only be one elvis
Elvis loved gospel music - they say they played gospel music all night long. He won 3 Grammys for his gospel music. Yes he is underrated. I have been listening to him since I was a kid and never get tired of hearing his voice. When he died, I cried and could not believe it.
This song needs to be out today. He sang with such compassion. It took a toll on him singing this song. Waltet Earl Brown wrote this song.
When you listen to Elvis sing gospel, it is so emotional and uplifting. You can hear it coming from him soul.
@Jay Viviane
Just so you know, I love your comment.
My favourite Elvis song. You can hear the raw emotion in his voice. 🥰
Killer voice killer looks.
This is greatness. Others may be able to sing but Elvis is all about passion and emotion.
Thank you so much 💯
Elvis is still the biggest selling artist of all time.
I enjoyed watching your reaction, I love it when young people get to see just how great he sang! He put his heart and soul into everything he sang! No auto tune just his great talent! We were given a gift from God when we were given this man!
This song is a tribute to MLK who he so loved and had a hard time with the great mans death. They said he broke down after he got off stage.
Other live performances to react to … Bridge Over Troubled Water, Just Pretend, How Great Thou Art.
yeah, he said it hurt too much to perform it.
You missed Kentucky Rain, Linda. I never realised he never sang this song again. It is one of my faves. Thanks for that.
@@saritobarim31 No he didn't ..... That is a lie
That's right ..... But he did it Three times for that show ..... I have the proof .....
@@bign8580 - Congratulations... You have the "proof" of something which was never contested. 😉
Elvis was a great singer even these other singers were born. That is why they don't know him.,but the other countries knows him.he was a popular in Europe and Australia
Elvis knew when to dig deep, and he was singing from the soul on this performance.
Sad that his manager destroyed all enjoyment of it with his financial Abuse still surprised he was done for murder giving he drove Elvis to an early grave.
You're seeing why we love him so much!
Elvis is the most under appreciated vocalist of all time.
Incorrect Elvis is the Greatest Vocalist of All Time and no one comes close.
@@heyyo1636 I’ve always said there’s Elvis, then everyone else a distant second.

This song is still relevant today. I’m praying we reach a day we can all walk hand in hand no matter color or race.
That’s a very astute observation about Elvis. The iconic imagery that comes up with him, the clothes and jewelry the limos the jet planes the gold records, Cadillacs the hair all overshadow that he was also the greatest male American vocalist.
greatest vocalist of any country
@@matthewdavis418 and of any Century

The GOAT, Greatest Of All Time! His music got better with age. We lost him too soon.
He is timeless. The vocals are always impeccable. This particular song is an anthem for our country today!!
For the world.
Elvis was underrated as a singer because some focused on his looks, his charm, and his dancing.
One of the greatest performances of all time, by the greatest artist of all time! The 🤴 King 👑
Gives me chills everytime. His best song. 🥰
It was 4 Takes
@@RJsStudio131 4 takes but all of them were perfect
@@TryPuttingItInRiceChase Well almost!!! The first take was a perfect false start.... But yes, the final 3 were perfect in thier own right!!!

Put it this way…. I’d be very pleased to wake up tomorrow and be able to sing like Elvis
Elvis was not just an entertainer. He was the King of Rock and he belongs to God!!!
I always have chills when I hear/see this performance but to see YOU watching him and reacting to Elvis not only singing the heck out of that song, but FEELING it, actually brought tears to my eyes. It’s great to see young people still appreciate the phenomenon that was Elvis ❤️
Elvis put his ❤️ and soul into this song
How can Elvis Presley not be in any top 10 list. The power, range and feel of his voice in, in my opinion, untouchable. To me he is the greatest singer who ever lived. I honestly can't think of anyone who is better. Sam Cooke would be the closest and just quietly how can Sam not be very, very high in that top 10 list. I love Otis Redding, but Sam Cooke had him done cold as a pure singer.
And so did Elvis. I honestly think that people who don't really rate him really haven't listened to him. Or at least, they haven't listened to the right songs.
How can he not be in any top 1 list...?

This performance shows why he was the GOAT.
50 plus years have gone by and we, his fans, still love and miss him!! Much love, Elvis!!
TCB
BEAUTIFUL‼️👏👏👏👏👏👏
I love when a new generation learns to appreciate ELVIS ❤Thank you for the reaction

Elvis is like the forever pop/rock culture icon version of Disney. I have two tattoos in honor of him. ❤️ I love that he was from the south, poor, but filled with the American DREAM!!!!
Here we are , 44 years after his death , celebrating the genius of Elvis and introducing him to new generations ... there will never be another one like him ! His soul will shine forever !!
He is from the Deep South just as I! So many of us from the area embraced the feeling and thoughts expressed by Elvis in this song! Back in the 60s my dad would say to us…. God made of all. We are no different! I’ve always appreciated that my parents brought us up to see the person and NOT the skin color!
I think that this is the best performance ever by anyone. He truly gives us the greatest performance with all the passion, power and doesn't need an ovation or whatever
