@@brandonnshante Elvis was a huge fan of Dr. King. Lmao! I slightly disagree with you. He’s the king of rock and roll for a reason. He is loved still all around the world. He is still the best selling artist of all time. The latest biopic on him was a blockbuster. He’s the only artist in 4 different music hall of fames. I think the new generation of reactors are definitely securing his already legendary legacy. Elvis first sang this song at the end of a 1968 Christmas Special broadcast nationally. As per the producer-director of the '68 special -- Steve Binder -- Elvis, Binder & others were together in the studio when they heard noise coming from the TV in the next room; it was the TV news broadcast that Robert Kennedy had just been assassinated. Binder, Elvis, et al sat up until about 4 a.m. talking about the turmoil in the world at that time w-Elvis expressing his thoughts & feelings, also the assassination of Pres. Kennedy & Vietnam. Binder asked songwriter Walter Earl Brown to compose a song based on those discussions. The song is notable for its similarities to Martin Luther King’s wish for a world of peace and harmony. The red tie was for the blood shed in Vietnam. Elvis was so severely nervous about the special that he told Binder he didn't remember the songs, he forgot the lyrics & he wasn't going out there, & Binder said i don't care if you walk out, just say hello & walk off, but you are going out. And out he came.
Elvis wrote this song as a dedication to MLK. They didn't want him to do it but he said to bad so sad, I'm doing it. He was raised up in Mississippi and Memphis and sang in black churches. A truly good man.
Elvis never wrote this song. It was Steve Binder who asked Walter Earl Brown to come up w-something reminiscent of King's hope for peace & harmony after sitting up w-Elvis until 4.am. discussing the assassination that included Robert Kennedy & a world in turmoil.
@@cooter-of7ej It was not TO anyone -- AGAIN, it was meant as a message for the hope of having a world of peace & harmony, like King's speech for a world of peace & harmony. Just came across your channel and subbed. This was Elvis’s tribute to Dr King and Robert F Kennedy. Both men were continually fighting for Civil Rights and both were killed because of that. I can only imagine how great of a president Bobby Kennedy would have been and how much higher Dr King would have risen. This was Elvis’s tribute and it’s a powerful truth. There’s going to be people that say Elvis was racist. It’s completely untrue. He would get boycotted and there were many attempts to “cancel” him because he would go into Black communities because that’s where he was most comfortable. That was a no no during segregation. Please don’t listen to the hate about Elvis. There’s just too much evidence to the contrary.
This song was & still is a great song & it is so very true I know that this WORLD WOULD BE A MUCH BETTER PLACE THE SAD part is there are a lot of people keep pushing {. THEY ARE MAKING IT ALL ABOUT THE COLOR OF ARE SKIN NOT WHAT THE PEOPLE HEARTS AND THEY ARE DOING THE SAME THING FOR BEING A CHRISTIAN }. That is truly the sad part is they don’t care what they are doing to this great country that we live in I WOULD WEATHER DIE JESUS CHRIST IS THE ONE THAT I LOVE HE IS ARE FATHER & ALL OF US ARE FAMILY HOW EVER YOU LOOK AT IT BECAUSE GOD MADE ADAM & EVE THEY HAD 33 boys & 23 girls in the BIBLE Says that Adam had 40,000 offspring Eve had 20 sets of twins

Notable for its similarities with Martin Luther King Jr.'s 1963 "I Have a Dream" speech, Brown wrote the song as a response to the assassinations of Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King, which had happened a few months previously. Knowing about Presley’s fondness for both men, he wrote "If I Can Dream" with Presley in mind.

Elvis & Steve Binder saw the TV news about Robert Kennedy's assassination & sat up until 4 a.m. discussing the world's situation in turmoil & Binder asked Walter Earl Brown to compose a song reminiscent of King's speech for peace & harmony.
The song is a man grieving on stage for MLK, who had just been assassinated. He was literally begging the world to stop all the hatred and to come together in love. He wanted MLK's "I Have a Dream" speech to become reality. The song and performance is NOT a generic "follow your dream" message, but a "For God's sake, why can't we come together and stop all this hatred and violence and have true equality!!"

First, it does not matter who wrote it. It matters that Elvis wants something because he loved Martin Luther king and he sang it with how he felt you can tell. This is a real emotional performance so people please. It does not matter. He grew up poor like a lot of white. People also grew up poor including me in Canada. They called me and my 2 brothers and sisters.P*** w**** t****, so guess what?We all experience different things.Elvis grapp poor and he loved hanging out with his little friend and going to Listen outside of the black churches. That's where he really got music from.Guess what?We all have a certain music in us.Does not matter.I do not like the music after the midnight's it's crap
It is believed that after Elvis sang this song, Elvis went back stage and cried. After Elvis stopped crying, he said "I will never sing another song or act in another movie I don't believe in again". The facts are, Elvis never sang this song again. If Elvis believed in this song he would have sung it again, which he did not. Which tells me he did not believe in the song. Sorry folks. It meant nothing to Elvis.
You are one of the rumor mongers watch "Elvis and the Black Community". You ought to thank him for bringing black music to mainstream.
@@carolhayar3037 it was alot to mlk if i can dream mlk i have a dream
@@cooter-of7ej It was not TO anyone -- AGAIN, it was meant as a message for the hope of having a world of peace & harmony, like King's speech for a world of peace & harmony. Once again, after Steve Binder & Elvis spoke, Binder asked Brown to compose a song based on the talks Binder & Elvis had -- the basis of which was for people to live in peace & harmony.
What a great performance, Even though he was told Not to do that song (at least at this time)!
Totally agree
Beautiful reaction! This was inspired because MLK was assassinated 8 miles from his home. Then Kennedy was shot, he was so hurt with what was happening! He was so passionate and sang this with all his heart and soul! Thank you for reacting to this- 🙏🏽❤
You're welcome, thank you too.
It Felt Like You Were Watching God in a white suit playing Elvis that's the gift that keeps on giving that strong voice
Elvis. That is all.
Elvis Presley actually came to corpus Christi Texas and my dad as teenager had a chance to go see his performance at the coliseum which has been torned down years ago now this was very early in the kings carrer my dad's best friend was a security guard and got my dad into Elvis dressing room and actually got his autograph and left it to me after he passed away i keep his autograph in my safety box at my bank and although i never had the honor of meeting Elvis Presley the king i do have his autograph 👍
I try by Angela Bofill. On episode of unsung song written by her when she was 17 she was in love with one of her classmates who ended up playing in her band he said he never know she was interested in him

a life is like a dream, and a dream is like a thought, and it only comes from you and god, so if you can live your dream, you can be you, and you can be great, and do great things that all the other monkies will become jealous over, and scream and throw their poop at you.. so be careful.. but if youre strong, and have the flame inside, let it shine all the same, because theres no greater glory of mankind to ever be seen, and you owe it to yourself to live your dream, and not the dream of others
....MLKjr was shot to death not 9 miles from Elvis' home(Graceland in Memphis).
And Robert Kennedy was shot 2 mos. later.
Try Trying to Get to You from this same show.
He was asking his Father up above. God.
Oh okay! Thanks
If you werea black person in this period segregation, racism. There is still things happening!!!!
I'm told this was Elvis' tribute to MLK; Elvis was very distraught over his assassination as he admired dr. King very much
Elvis & Steve Binder saw the TV news about Robert Kennedy's assassination & sat up until 4 a.m. discussing the world's situation in turmoil & Binder asked Walter Earl Brown to compose a song reminiscent of King's speech for peace & harmony.

Elvis performed this in 1968 during the race riots happening all over the US. it took a lot of guts
The history behind the song was the death of King and Bobby Kennedy
The song is a man grieving on stage for MLK, who had just been assassinated. He was literally begging the world to stop all the hatred and to come together in love. He wanted MLK's "I Have a Dream" speech to become reality. The song and performance is NOT a generic "follow your dream" message, but a "For God's sake, why can't we come together and stop all this hatred and violence and have true equality!!"
It was also for the assassination of Robert Kennedy & a world in turmoil.
Filmed in June after MLK was murdered in April and Robert Kennedy was murdered while they were rehearsing.
This song was dedicated to MLK!
It included Robert Kennedy's assassination also after seeing it on the TV news
This was a tribute 2 months after MLK was Killed
AND Robert Kennedy's assassination after they saw it on the TV news after which they spent hrs. discussing our world in turmoil -- the song being reminiscent of King's speech for a world of peace & harmony.
Taking it to the streets, black water, what a fool believes, minute by minute by the doobie brothers
You forgot to mention that this song was in the aftermath of the shooting of Martin Luther King.
We didn't know until our B&S Fam told us.
It was also a culmination of Robert Kennedy's assassination, Vietnam -- after Elvis & Binder sat up all night discussing a world in turmoil.
