I'm sure you've already been told this ....but in case you haven't...this is his tribute to MLK just months after he was killed! He was big supporter of MLK and when he was killed Elvis was devastated! Growing up in the south himself in poor black neighborhoods....he never had the prejudice that was so prevalent during that time period. During segregation ...when it was illegal for a white person to even go into an all black establishment .....Elvis played in the clubs. He started singing in the local churches choir....an all black church....unheard of back then. If you haven't seen "Elvis and the Black Community" documentary .....check it out some time. It will probably explain better than I can where Elvis came from & some insight of who he was.

The notes he hits on the phrase "out there in the dark" is old school blues pentatonic scale from deep inside, old Delta blues Howlin Wolf and Sonny Boy Williamson and Muddy Waters and Robert Johnson type old school blues. Elvis was hittin from the rockin chair as they say. He had more old school blues in his soul than anyone his shade of pale. James Brown and Little Richard both considered Elvis a brother, in the best way possible.

My dad's boss was Elvis recruiter, yep, put Elvis in the Army in 1958, my dad went in in 1960, been to Graceland twice, '76, '77, was there one month before he died, was suppost to meet him but he was asleep upstairs, you ever visit Graceland?👍✌️@@tarae5076

I have always been intrigued by citizens of the UK that are Elvis fans. There are so many amazing artists that are from the UK, but you are a bigger fan of Elvis than you are the Rolling Stones or the Beatles. In my opinion there is nobody past or present to be on Elvis level as an entertainer and vocalists, but I am an American. Elvis never performed in Europe, but did you ever get an opportunity to watch Elvis live Jane? I am 39 years old, so obviously the King was way before my time.

Didn’t even know what he looked like til we moved back to England in 1963 and saw a film, where I wished I was the little girl acting with him!!! Love the reactions of todays generations who are finding Elvis and keeping his legacy alive. Best holiday ever was my visit to Graceland recently. 👌💕🕺

Voices like this can NEVER BE SILENCED. They exist and belong to ALL of humanity now. ELVIS ENDS WITH A HUMAN PEACE SIGN done with his arms. As the centuries and millenniums fly by... in 5 or 6 THOUSAND years from now... I have a strong premonition that THIS SONG will still be played. It sadly holds the exact same significance that it did when it was performed in the 1960s. In fact it is even more popular today.
The fact that this civil rights anthem tributing Dr Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy was written specifically for Elvis Presley to deliver, and then performed by this white man, who grew up in one of America's first mix neighborhoods during the Great Depression/Segregation era, DURING the race riots we all know about in the 1960s, ON A TELEVISION NETWORK that could be viewed by just about EVERY HOME IN AMERICA, against the demands of his OWN MANAGER, the NBC NETWORK who aired the show, and the NBC SPONSORS paying for the show SPEAKS VOLUMES and should always be in the historic record of this moment moving forward.

This was the last song of his comeback special. His manager did not want him to end the show with this but Elvis was so affected by Dr. King's death in Memphis that he insisted that he would do this song. If you are ever in Memphis visiting Elvis's Graceland - nearby in downtown Memphis is the motel that Dr. King was murdered and it is now a great Civil Rights Museum. Great reaction!

If I can dream, the song, was written approximately 24 hours before the taping of the Singer TV Special of 1968 entitled "Elvis". Elvis wanted a message song and he was devastated when he learned that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr was shot and killed and it happened in Elvis' adopted hometown of Memphis, Tennessee. When the song was completed Elvis had, via a piano as the only instrument, a few chances to learn the song. Fortunately, Elvis had a photographic memory and he FELT the song. He cried after the first take. He knew this was a meaningful song and the exact opposite that Colonel Parker wanted to end the special (being a Christmas song). From 1968 to 1969 to 1970 Elvis' 4 1/2 vocal octave range was incredible, Not only had his voice matured but Elvis was hungry. Hungry to put the 30 movies me made, and some of then he despised, behind him. There was no guarantee that the tv special would be a success. But, Elvis put his faith and God and again opposed to Colonel Parker Elvis put a gospel melody into the special. Elvis was on the west coast when the tv special aired. 5 minutes into the special his phone wouldn't stop ringing. Western Union messages came from around the world. This tv special was loved by he critics and fans alike. Elvis had shown who he was and he made no apologies. If I Can Dream was a spectacular song sung by a master who put all his life experiences into the song. Take care and may God bless you. Jeff Schrembs ElvisCollector.info

I don’t know if anyone has mentioned this but this song was written for Elvis during a very turbulent time in America’s history. We had endured the assassination of our President, John F Kennedy, then Martin Luther King was shot and killed. You can feel the emotion in his voice when he is singing. Always brings a tear to my eyes.. TCB⚡️

As others have noted, this is a tribute to Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. King was murdered 15 minutes from Graceland, Elvis’ home. That added to the agony of Elvis Presley’s heartache of King’s assassination! Is there any wonder why he was so passionate in this performance? Love your reaction my friend.

As a country back in this time, we lost all of the visionaries to the evil hands of assassination, which inflicted almost total darkness to our countries 💔 spirit and existence. Gunned down were President John Kennedy, Dr. Martin Luther King, Bobby Kennedy, and even Malcolm X in a time span of 5 years!!
Elvis was the Biggest star and entertainer at this time, and he sang about our pain, loss, grief, and unbearable 💔 sadness we faced as a nation during this very DARK period in our nation's history. Sadly, in 1977, he, too, would be lost too soon.......😢😢😢

Probably the most important song Elvis ever did. This was the big ending to his TV "Comeback" special" in 1968, taped in summer 1968, right after Dr. King and Bobby Kennedy were assassinated. Elvis was pretty pissed off about that. He had a song written just for this. The producers and his manager Colonel Tom [the con artist] Parker didn't want him to do it, afraid of repercussions from the white south etc. Elvis told them where they could go and did it anyway or he'd pull the plug on the show.

The back story behind that song is incredible. It was in 1968 and Elvis put it all on the line for his convictions and what he believed. Many who don’t know much about Elvis just think he was a shallow Rock & Roller however he was much deeper than that by far. You should react to “Love Me Tender” 1970 live concert. It will shock you what he does during the song and leave you speechless.

I grew up listening to Elvis, but only found this performance a couple of years ago. It instantly became my favorite. More passion than I ever saw in his performances.

This lady is pure class... she will listen to the song with her audience and not interrupt every two seconds... and she genuinely enjoys listening to good music... and she's drop-dead gorgous

Hi Miaaaa, You should react to Angelina Jordan a singer from Norway now lives in L.A. Shes 18 years old now, Has a deep voice like elvis, They nick named her the mini Elvis in female form since she was 6 years old. She is my favorite singer of all time. Elvis was now she took the place as the G.O.A T. IMO She just sang at the Nobel peace prize concert a month ago in tribute to Narges Mahamiddii a woman in prision in Iran for standing up for womens rights in Iran and she won the peace prize while sitting in prison. Angelina shows so much respect for the peace prize folks and Narges the way she handles the song unchained melody. Its breath taking. A must see.

You have SO much Elvis in front of you. This song was his tribute to MLK and RFK who were both assassinated the same year. Watch the entire 68 Comeback Special. Listen to In The Ghetto and Unchained Melody, and all his gospel songs. And PLEASE watch the documentary Elvis and the Black Community. Whitney Houston's mother sang with Elvis for years. They both give interviews for this doc. Leave your mind and your heart open. Do much joy and magic waiting for you. Crazy Old White Lady
