My personal stem cell experience... I am 70 years old and 10 years ago I had an MRI that found two torn miniscus and a bone spur in my left knee and med to advanced arthritis in both knees. I was in a lot of pain! I had stem cells from a delivered placenta (so no moral problem) and my own spun blood plasma injected into both knees, praying it would help. My knees were noticeably better the next day, but completely like new within about 3 weeks!
I have no more arthritis and it's been 10 years! And the bone spur and two torn miniscus are healed. 70 years old now and knees like new. I tell everybody, but the sad thing is that insurance co's don't pay for it, so it doesn't get much awareness!
    Loved your dark chocolate talk!

There is a place close to me that advertised it and I went in to see what they could do. They use delivered placentas, donated by women. They say those stem cells are like neuttral to everyone, so no rejection at all from your body. It sure worked for me, I was in a lot of pain and the orthopeasic surgeon said I should get surgery. I really didn't want to do that, plus I had medium to advanced arthritis in both of my knees which would only get worse as I age! I just know it really worked for me!!

My rule with chocolate now is to have it only as add-on ingredient (vs eating it a piece as a treat), so I may use it sparingly for Tiramisu or a few chocolate chips over an ice-cream bowl. There are of course other ways to get polyphenols. For example, some Berries are high in polyphenols (anthocyanins, flavonols, and phenolic acids). I add them to our smoothies.

A few issues NOT covered in this otherwise informative discussion of chocolate: First off, the lower the cacao percentage the HIGHER the amount of sugar or other sweetener. Sugar is to be avoided. WHO advise people to eat 25 grams or less per day. So, if you are going to eat chocolate with a lower cacao percentage, realize the the balance is going to be a sweetener of some sort. Personally, I look for chocolate that is either 85% cacao or, if lower, then sweetened with stevia or some other natural sweetener. The second issue Dr. Li left out (forgot?) is to mention is what is the maximum amount of chocolate or cocoa to be consumed per day. One square per bar or ??? I would recommend that before you regularly consume a cacao product, you ensure that the company has a third party test all finished products for heavy metals to ensure low levels. The Consumer Reports article is entitled "A Third of Chocolate Products Are High in Heavy Metals, CR's Tests Find". Thanks again, Dr. Li, for another great video.

      Invaluable information! TY
Yes, Consumer Reports tested 28 Dark chocolate bars for lead and cadmium.
Europe has clear policies and limits on the presence of heavy metals in food, but the US does not 😮. The FDA has yet to establish specific limits on heavy metals contamination in finished food products.
Limits only exist in bottled water, which I've recently read has microplastics!! Fiji on the safe list, was recently recalled.🙄
Top picks for least heavy metals in Chocolate:
      1. Mast Organic Dark Chocolate 80% Cocoa
      2. Taza Organic Chocolate 70% Cocoa
      3. Ghirardelli Intense Dark Chocolate Twilight Delight 86%/72% Cocoa
      4. Valrhona Abinao Dark Chocolate
      5. Villakuyaya Organic Dark Chocolate Single Origin 100% Cocoa
      Worst:
      1. Theo Organic Pure Dark 70%, 80%
      2. Trader Joe's Dark Chocolate Lovers 85%
      3. Lily's Extremely Dark 85% Cocoa
      4. Green & Blacks Organic Dark Chocolate 70% Cocoa.
I've consumed 3 of the bad brands, 2 of the good brands.

    • @carlr2837
      @carlr2837 29 дней назад +2

While mentioning the sugar issue, there is one more factor that should be mentioned. In general higher cacao percentage is better because it means less sugar, but higher does not always mean better in another respect. When you go over 80-85%, you need to check to see if the particular bar has been "treated with alkali" or "dutched". To remove the bitterness in very high cacao chocolates, they often treat the cacao with alkali, which removes the flavanoids. Yes, it is less bitter, and yes, it has less sugar, but it also has less of the good things that gives the cacao its flavor and makes it good for you.

A way to consume it right. Select a high quality chocolate 🍫 with 90% as they have much less fat and sugar in them. You can eat one square or maybe even two squares per day. It is suggested you take glycine and carnosine before and after you ate the two squares take berberin and then walk for 5 to 10 minutes if you can. Do prp once a month as well.

(And that's just one serving -- many people eat more than that daily because of all the recommendations that dark chocolate is supposedly so good for you.) And Consumer Reports only checked for lead & cadmium, not arsenic and other heavy metals. WTF??

I am from Portugal and we have several types of rice grown there. I eat a Mediterranean diet but I like Japanese, Indian and Korean foods too. My fear with adopting a diet with nutrients that "recruit" stem cells as cacao's polyphenols do, is that in the long period it will reduce the amount of stem cells.
But i am ignorant on this subject i really don't know if this is something that could realistically happen.
Would stem cells regenerate as they get used by the body?
Or is there a limited number of stem cells and once they're gone they can't regenerate?
Would a daily intake of cacao deplenish stem cells permanently? Or even just temporarely?
Sorry if i bother. I ask because i'm currently consuming 30g of cacao daily (i'm addicted it's too good), so after this video i'm a bit worried about stem cells.
I would appreciate any information i would really like to know more.
Thank you for your videos they are always very useful!

If certain foods like chocolate stimulate the good stem cells in the body, could it also stimulate the stem cells of cancer that got left behind after chemo and radiation?

Problem is all these chocolate bars are from USA. So expensive to ship to the UK, cost per bar is about £11. Are there any brands in the UK that are safe?

I think it’s unlikely that a consumer report from a few years ago specifying chocolates with low levels of lead and cadmium will still be accurate today.
In fact, those levels may not have even been consistent back then if you had tested different batches of the same brand, same bar.

Dr. Li, have you come across any research regarding the levels of oxalates in dark chocolate and, if so, is there enough to be concerned about?

Thank you for the clarification, but what about Raw Cacao. Every day, I mix 1 table of raw cacao powder with smoothie.
Is it safe to use? I chose a single source, Non GMO , & organic ? Please comment on that? Thank you

My neighbor who is a 12 year breast cancer survivor has a piece of dark chocolate with a small glass of red wine after dinner. She says it's the best part of her day. She eats the 72% Hu, so I'll let her know your recommended chocolates. Thank you.

Oh no. I used to buy Hu because the info showed where it came from, etc. I thought it was extremely healthy, though a bit expensive. A few years ago I saw a chart of dark chocolate with the most lead. Hu was at the top! I had about 4 bars left in the box I bought and tossed them! Your friend needs to stop eating Hu dark chocolate! Mast and Taza were on the list with the lowest. I'd never heard of them. Ghirardelli 72% and higher was also lower in lead. It's not organic though. I had to fight myself to buy non-organic, but figured it's better than more lead. Taza and Mast are on Amazon, but kind of expensive. I didn't want to spend a lot for something I may not like. Especially since I had tossed about $20 in Hu chocolate.

Maybe the body kept reserves in the bone marrow for good reasons. Depleting them from bone marrow may be asking for other issues downstream. Perhaps one shouldn't waste them.
