Washing soda is a primary ingredient in making your own laundry soap, which is so easy to do.

I broke down and bought a digital one finally after having a shirt or two fail pastel. Under $20 and it shows my current PH in the mid 10s. I use the washing soda but after talking to others I may try baking some baking soda as it's dirt cheap. pH Plus is looking interesting too. I'm told that the washing soda has additives but it for sure works!

    The ash from Amazon

VERY interested in this! I've had failures that I could only attribute to my soda ash - I use Washing Soda. Drives me crazy when a shirt comes out pastel instead of saturated and I can't tell if it was temp or PH. I now have a digital meter and my current bucket is coming out at 10.4 so it sounds like I need to go higher. I also recycle my water, I use a Panda spin dryer that drains back into the bucket. Supposedly the Washing Soda has additives and isn't pure but it's dirt cheap and EASY to find so it's what I've been using. I may now rethink that!
One thing you didn't try but might be interesting is baking soda that's been cooked in the oven. Supposedly this makes pretty much pure soda ash but I've yet to try it - I may now do so though! I'll have to look up the temps involved but spread out in a cookie sheet or pan and cooked for awhile might be cheap and a good compromise on the pool powder. Really appreciate you trying this - especially with ice dying and hot water to see if there's any real difference. Need some chemists to chime in! Oh - I also have a water softener, I wonder if soft vs hard water makes much difference? It'll change the PH some for sure but what else?

I love your comments! A water softemer is not suppose to effect your water ph level. that being said, i did fond that instead of 1 cup per gallon of ph booster, the washing powder dose not raise the ph enough woth that ratio, and requires more powder to liquid to reach the same levels, which i think also effects the dollar bottom line as to which is more economical. I saw a video years ago when i was deep diving into soda ash of a guy baking baking soda, and i thought it was hooey, now i just did some googling and it a real thing. hrm… more video ideas!! Thanks formyour comments, they keep me motivated and excited to share!!

@@TishTV I'm not so much worried about the PH from the softener as I am the hardness of the water, I wonder if it makes much difference? So long as my shirts come out well saturated and look good I'm not going to worry about it too much but I do wonder sometimes :) I do think I need to up the PH in my bucket and maybe find a bigger bucket too, 5 gallons is too small these days!

@@TishTV I saw that! I'm going to have to find something suitable. I keep my spinner and bucket in a shower so it's a little tight but I can certainly use something bigger than a 5gallon bucket :)

Just today I'd gone to Michaels to buy some soda ash but they only had kits. Used Google to find soda ash "near me" and pool stores popped up! And I thought 'that's gonna be cheaper!' And it was. $16 for 5 pounds of PH Plus. Probably cheaper for a bigger bag but I don't have room for it .🫤 Great video! Sorry about your ph paper. That's the kinds of sh*t I do!!
