I had a really shitty job washing pots for one pound an hour at Torness power station around the time this came out; [1981] but tunes like this made life well worth living.
Did you girls know that Madness would be there shooting a video or were you just there by chance? Wish I could have been there but I was only 11 at the time.
great to see the lads having their breakfast there in the begining of the video..................wonder is that cafe still there more then likely not.................. love madness great bunch of lads
@@eamonnquigley2125 the address is 95 Golborne Road, London W10 5NL. I got that from the Wikipedia entry for this song. I checked Street View and sadly it's long gone, but you can clearly see it's the same place (compare Street View to the scene of the band leaving the cafe at 2:57). Currently a falafel restaurant, but older views show that there was a Papa John's pizzeria earlier in the '10s.
Just lovely. Looks like Golborne Road nearWestbourne Park, at the top of Portobello Road. We used to go up there after school in the late 70s. Love London. Shame about our useless government who've just trashed the economy and the currency to make the bankers richer and the rest of us poorer. I was a teenager when this came out. Now I'm in my early 60s and the country has never seemed more unhappy.
"trashed the economy" Check your facts. It doesn't matter if you go back to 2016 and the Brexit vote, or 2010 and the Tory election victory, the UK economy has since grown faster than France, Germany, Italy or Japan, or the EU average. Sucker!
It was actually only half as long as it ended up. Madness did not want to release it so only did a short version, the record company just doubled it in length. This was mentioned on The Business the Madness collection CD's.
I returned from a week away training with the Army and this was playing on the radio as I opened the front door I cannot explain the emotions that I had just been through under friendly fire 😂😂 What an absolute tune this is , brings back so many great memories ❤️
Fantastic band ! Made a Massive difference to my life growing thru puberty & becoming a mod, ska music / clothes / life/style appreciator Peace & Love to all 😉👍🏻
1981 on #mymusicalroadto50 Madness - The Return Of The Los Palmas 7. If there was any light to come from this dark year musically, it came in the form of Madness. Another single I managed to acquire. I loved this track and the video. I also loved the cover of the single which used to crack me up. It just summed up the Nutty Boys for me. A few years later I got the album ‘Complete Madness’ which had the lyrics to all the songs in the gatefold. It made me laugh that under the lyrics for ‘The Return Of The Los Palmas 7’ it just had “waiter?”. Fantastic music from a fantastic group.
Though not a syllable was sung in this single, still their charm and wit shone brightly through this melodious and catchy number which truly showcased their topnotch musicianship and rhe richness of their sound. Ever a joy to listen to Glad it made Top 10.
Wouldn't it be great to get everyone who appeared in this video back together for a photograph at the very same cafe in London! And just see how everyone's changed. (well I'd think it'd be great, anyway)
Come off it. I remember people like you saying the same back when this was in the charts. And they hated Ska for being multiracial. Thatcher made sure the 80s were sh*t for working people.
I've driven down that road so many times and never realised it appeared in a madness video with Trellick tower in a misty background. I now look forward to my next trip to Maida Vale.
I always liked this video even though it's mostly a mishmash of random film clips. Madness always knew how to make a memorable video on the cheap. Interesting (if only to myself) that at 1:11 you can see a can of Coke that had the old fashioned pull-off tab. I remember those being phased out here in the USA in the late 70s in favor of the pop-in thing cans still have. I heard the switch was due to the common American habit of dropping the pull tab into the can, where it became a choking hazard. Don't know how often it could work itself out when someone was drinking from the can, but it must have happened a few times. I guess it took longer for global bottlers to make the switch.
My cousin came over from America as a teenager and we were watching TOTP together. Until Madness came on the music was not that interesting to him. Then this video was shown and he burst out laughing when the saxophonist jumped up on the table impressing with their comedic talent. It made my day to see him in stitches laughing. Well done Madness.
At last a video that says what it means,(after 1st wasted 45 seconds).Flying off like to another planet(Los Palmos), and then the rejoice of returning back to Blighty, and its associate cultures. Even leaden, wet, grey sky at end outside inner city greasy spoon cafe, couldn't have been timed better. My joint favourite Madness song with Uncle Sam and Wings of a dove.Good Post.Thanks.
In secondary school, the careers guy played a video about various careers. Madness appeared in it, promoting self belief I think. I wish it was 1983 again, on the waltzers in a fair in Llandudno with a girl, Wings of a Dove blasting out of the loudspeakers!
I'm glad that this phenomenon has appeared in this world. Their vid+song -consept is very entertaining and it always puts you in a better mood. Of course it's very english but it's also a caricature. I hope they still have something to say in this business. You people of this era certainly want it too. You are not so old. If you are here in 2021 understanding how unique this is you are a good person. Greetings from Loki.
Spam fritters, egg and chips. That was what I had on a Saturday at the Venus cafe, a proper greasy spoon back in the day when Golborne Road was a traditional market. Sadly it's not there any longer, it has long since been replaced with poncey shops and stalls selling an altogether different variety of tut.

Great music; and a great video! I remember quite a few of those people / events. As they're leaving the café at the end; is that Trellick Tower in the background?
I was 16 years old in 1981 and remember this great music. These were the days when you could sit in a cafe and have a cup of tea and a smoke before all the do gooders came along whining and moaning "don't do this" and "don't do that".
I had a really shitty job washing pots for one pound an hour at Torness power station around the time this came out; [1981] but tunes like this made life well worth living.

great comment Jackie, hope you're well :-)
Boss! :) Take care .x. Big Madness fan :)
Another reminder that that saxophone is a (sadly) forgotten accompaniment in today's music... that's Madness.
This is the first record I ever bought, purchased from Woolworths in January 1981 around my 10th Birthday.
One of my first singles too. Was B side to Grey Day. Bought in Dublin '81. I was 10 that year too.
Same here, from the Woolies in Greenford Broadway!
@@Fizzbomb123 Me too, first ever record purchased. I think I was 10 also. Weird eh, the perfect song for the discerning 10 year old Ska fan :)

I really think it was my favourite Madness promo video, happier times...
Madness never got enough recognition for how musically diverse and able they were.
Stevie boy is here in November 2024.XX what a magic song 🎵 brings back a lot of memories from my teenage years. ❤❤❤❤
Oh I miss the 80's. Music was brilliant.

Aint another band like madness,superb

The Madnificent Seven. Still entertaining the great unwashed. All hail the learned Lord Suggs of Camden Town.

Underrated song from Madness
The old Venus cafe on Golborne Road, West London. Ah, Happy Days.
I thought I recognised Trellick Tower in the background
Watching Madness playing on the BBC for New Year 2019 but all I needed was the word 'Waiter'
What a time capsule this is. So many memories. Genius.
What I wouldn't give for a full instrumental album with songs like this from the boys.
That would be just brilliant
I'm from The USA and I've had this song paying in my head while I'm prepping for my Thanksgiving Feast.
Try One Step Beyond by Madness when doing the Christmas dinner, the song definitely firs the occasion 😊

Would they have to eat similar food?
pix046 Yes course they would
Wouldn't be able to smoke in the cafe though
The old people are definitely dead though
It would be Morean1944 definitely, do you know if the Venus café is still there and where would this be?
Fantastic song by a fantstic band.
Love the wintry scene at the end of the video on Golborne Rd,and how Trellick Tower is partially hidden in the mist.
