Madness - One Better Day

  • From Madness's 1984 album, Keep Moving, One Better Day spent 7 weeks in the UK Chart and peaked at number 18. The song was the last Madness single ever released by Stiff Records.
    This self-funded video was filmed mainly in Arlington Road in Camden and, more specifically, Arlington House, a homeless refuge which appears in the first line of the song. A bittersweet track about hope and despair, the video sees the band members depicted mainly as homeless people and features Suggs dancing with his "homeless" wife, Bette Bright.

    Suggs photobombed us outside a pub in London a couple of years ago. After he'd walked off with his mates I decided I couldn't let the moment pass so chased him down the road and started singing the chorus to this, and he joined in.
    Fast forward to 15th June this year and I saw them play Kenwood House in London. He announced to the crowd they would play one they rarely did live, and then this started!
    I swear he did it for me....

      +discreditor *laughs sheepishly* No... Please forgive my embarrassing ignorance. I just heard that song too recently. Here in the US, the TV & radio just cram Our House down our throats. And in the Rockabilly scene, it's only One Step Beyond. Frankly, I'm a tad sick of those 2 songs, so hearing all these magnificent different songs is a relief. Is/was Baggy Trousers popular?

    • @discreditor
      @discreditor 8 лет назад +3

      +Moonlight * Baggy Trousers was the song that made me sit up and take notice of Madness back in the day. It's just had a re lease of life in adverts, which was interesting but destroyed the whole rhythm of the original song, which is a frantic homage to (British) schooldays (of the 70s-my era).

    • @Route66er
      @Route66er 8 лет назад +3

      +discreditor How funny. That very song is the one that appealed to me rightaway (the 4th song I heard from Madness). The difference between us is that I'm 30 years late in hearing it. I've been missing out too long; The "re lease of life in adverts", are you referring to the Stella Artois commercial? I had to look it up, cuz they don't air it in the US.

    Surrounded by his past , what a line, that's pure poetry. Such pathos & truth as we are all surrounded by our past!! & As we round the bend to see the final furlong, it's best to cut yourself some slack!! Say what needs to be said to atone to family & friends, but remember to err is human or so someone much smarter than myself said & enjoy the time we have because nobody gives you the timetable of life, so try & make the best of it & don't put off doing things that need to be done today, because unfortunately you never know if there's going to be a tomorrow. There endith the lesson from a man who's race is nearly run , so do your best & be kind. PEACE AND LOVE TO EVERYONE ❤❤.

      As well as the last single on Stiff,this song was the last in their long run of one major or major-ish hit after another,which ran for almost 5 years from The Prince in the early autumn of 1979 to the summer of 1984. Bittersweet it certainly is. I thought Arlington House (not having seen the printed lyrics sounded like "Babington House" or something to me) must have been some kind of accomodation for down-and-out people in London,so I thank the notes above for confirming that. I noticed a growing number of people sleeping rough from about the autumn of 1984 as the effects of Thatcherism started to really bite,sadly.

    I'm sure many of you already know this, but Arlington House is still very much a working hostel that supports people who are homeless and/or from disadvantaged backgrounds to find secure permanent housing and gain stability as well as supporting small businesses and social enterprises. It operates as a not-for-profit business and invests all profits back into it's mission and supporting its vulnerable residents.
    It's songs like One Better Day where Madness really show their heart. If ever there was a song that was worthy of a re-release or being covered by a young contemporary artist or band, then this would definitely be it! Having owned the video tape of Devine Madness, this song got played a lot in my house. But it is a crying shame that the song has gone relatively under the radar when even now it has so much to offer. A few other similarly great songs that I feel deserve a listen would be 'Yesterday's Men', which always felt on a par with 'One Better Day' and plays off of the same sensitivities. Michael Caine, because it's bloody brilliant and could not sound overplayed no matter how many times you play it, and also worth mentioning that the bad tracked down the man, the legend that is Michael Caine to his hotel room and pleaded with him to record a brief introduction to the song, and since MC's daughter was a huge fan of the band he couldn't refuse, and the famous "My name is...." catchphrase was born. Sweetest Girl is another song that rarely gets a mention, and is one of the few cover songs that the band released, and they reinvented it. I would love them to play '4am' again as I saw them perform it in 1999/2000 but haven't heard it played since, and it's such a brilliant and thought provoking song.

    Beautiful song!!! That´s why these guys are one of the best bands ever... They can easily play ska songs like baggy trousers, nightboat to cairo, house of fun but they also can play great soul songs like one better day and yesterday´s men

    I love that the part of the lyrics that is spoken by the poor unfortunates is the most upbeat part of the song. Life is just what you make it.

    I was (and still am) a big Madness fan and I remember when this was out, I only had enough money to buy one record, I went along to Woolco to buy One Better Day but came away with Bronski Beats Smalltown Boy, I felt sooo guilty, got One Better Day later tho with it's massive free poster.
