Great track. One of Madness's best. What's quite amazing about this band is everyone in it was capable of quality songwriting.

Thanks for posting this clip. I remember hearing an interview on the radio about songs that were 'genius' and 'one better day' and it's orchestration was spoken about - it was a great piece about a tremendous track. This is along the same lines. Such a sublime tune :)

David Bedford This track has dated musically so well. I love this 'behind the scenes' clip. You must be so proud of your dad.
What a mature sound they have. One of my top tunes of Madness

People think of all the big hits but this was one of their best songs so underrated not given enough airplay.
How can madness not have a brit award???
You can't get more British than this band who sings about every life in London
Yet bands been around 2 minutes get one.
So proves these awards are not recognising legends.
They could of been massive in America as they love Our history architecture etc you see in their videos.
America missed out of a great band down to earth working class guys.

This is an interesting, engrossing bit of archive footage, not only for the input of David Bedford, but also the growth of Madness, undeniable UK cultural icons, and - importantly- early 1980's social history....plus a spellbinding look at a video that never came to be, or else was turned into a Bad Acting Fest on Camden Lock...

This song totally helped me to re evaluate Madness, this has got to be cherished as a unique piece of subliminal emotion and shreds your whole being. Fantastic!

I remember when this was first broadcast back in the spring of 1984. I watched it on my nans old B&W tv. Victoria Gardens was set to be the next single until they changed it to one better day at the last minute. I always thought madness were heading in a really exciting direction at this stage but it all seemed to fall apart commercially. I don't think the pop buying public could get to grips with a more grown up madness sound. To me their imperial period was from 82-84.

Stiff didn't want to make a video for this song, so Madness got Nigel Dick to direct what became the official video. Was the 'video' we see here an abandoned version or just some rushes to see if it would work? I think they were on the right lines as it would of been a major departure not to have the band in a video, New Order style.

Interesting to see Camden Lock as I remember it in the 80's, now an over commercialised tourist trap.

It’s funny how all great groups release 1 single in their canon that is musically sublime but chart position wise doesn’t live up to expectations, Being Boring by Pet Shop Boys is another great example, but in time they get reevaluated and become seen as classic pop songs. One Better Day should have been released as a double A side with the edited version of Victoria Gardens. It should also have been their farewell single. Unfortunately the band limped on for another two years after this release with ever declining success.

sadly its part of madness, stinking rich to homeless :( , if you don't submit to the will of the church
