Hello there Jeff. Finally making it over here and joining you. It is 10:52 in the evening on this Friday evening. But its never too late to hang out with a good buddy like yourself. Now wait a minute. I cannot believe that you can get a Sequoia to grow from a clipping. That is pretty darn impressive. You can clearly see how healthy the branch is from those roots. @@JefferyRusnock Hey Jeff, you are welcome to use word, honeydews. I don't own it but maybe I could take the credit for reviving it? :D When I was much younger I used to work with bunch of old men back in Oklahoma. When young group of us asked one old man to join us for a beer or two after work on Friday evening; he replied; "Sorry, boys, I got too many honeydews at home." I was confused so I asked, "You cannot have beer because you have too many honeydews to eat???" All the old men in the office giggled. The old man replied, "Not that kind of honeydews... Honey do this, Honey do that... that kind of Honey Do's.!" At the time, all the young ones didn't get it, including me. That is until I got married and had few kids. That is when I found out what honeydews were; and yes, it's always plural. LOL. It must be Okla. thing and not Penn. thing. Again, you are free to use it. :D Be safe and take care, Jeff. ~NammaN~

Question i want to buy one to put Into my room but my room only receives sunlight in the late afternoon. Would it do okay in that condition or does it need full sun ?
well I have to say my Sequoia only gets early morning sun which is perfect, I don’t like keeping the immature seedlings in direct full sun as I found they don’t do as well until they get much older. I keep mine on my back deck where it gets daylight and out of the full direct sun and they really respond well to those conditions! I hope that helps you, a bright room is perfect but out of long periods of full hot sun seems to be the ticket. Take care and best of luck! Keep in touch and let me know how you make out. ~ Jeff
Hey Jeff, I‘m currently trying to propagate giant sequoia cuttings. Until now I haven’t had any success with growing roots, that’s why I‘m trying to take a few cuttings each month because (judging from comments I have read) that it has to be done at a specific time at the year. I mainly try to grow these trees because my grandfather, who died recently, planted the one tree I am using cuttings off. I‘d be really glad if You could give any tips at what time of the year you took the cuttings; if you used any rooting hormones; how you took the cuttings, referring to if you cut the cuttings or pulled them off etc. Thank you for your video and greetings from Germany
Hello my friend how are you doing? So glad to see such an interest in these trees because I’m just in awe of them! I happen to cut 3 lower limbs as close as I could to the trunk of the tree and used only water with no root hormones to get the roots to push. I have to say I don’t think that there is any specific time to do this that I know of but I cut my branches in the spring and faithfully changed water for probably 4 to 6 months before I started seeing any signs of white roots at the base of the limb. It was a painstaking process but because the limb stayed green and was actually looking healthy I just kept it in water and low and behold the roots emerged. I used regular potting soil afterwards and is still doing well to this day at my friends home who eventually wants to plant it. BTW I kept it out of direct sunlight the entire time and it just stayed in bright daylight on my back deck until winter where it spent time on my workbench under a grow light. Thanks for watching and any other questions I can answer don’t hesitate! Take care my friend and talk soon! ~ Jeff
@@JefferyRusnock I thank you kindly for your response. I have tried picking cuttings at the very end of branches before. They have never worked and turned brown. Now in late September I have done as you said and hope to see some results. If not, I will try again in spring. I still remember when I was little that we had the same hights. Now it has already surpassed the 25 meter mark. It is really crazy what these plants can do.
@@Diabolo2110 So glad to hear back from you and that things are currently under way with your project! I wish you the best of luck with everything and hopefully you will keep me updated as things progress with your branch or branches depending on how many you cut, the more the better your chances…right? I think the fresh water with daily to every other day changes really made the difference in the rooting as fresh cool water holds more oxygen In but that is my opinion and experience with many of my redwood cuttings. Remember if the foliage is staying green as my cuttings did with even getting new growth during the process I believe you will have a great chance with this. The water changes was the biggest pain but looking back it wasn’t too bad and so glad I kept up with it, around a half inch of water to cover the bottom of your cutting should do it. I also forgot to mention I did mist the green foliage as well during the rooting process once or twice a week as they also take in moisture that way too, it keeps the cutting fresher but again it’s what I did and only my experience and opinion my friend! Take care, good luck and talk to you soon hopefully with good news from you! ~ Jeff
I was watching Karate Kid this week, and saw Mr Miyagi yelling Bonzai. This reminded me of that. Very cool Jeff. Love your passion for these types of things.
Hey John, Awesome to hear from you this evening! The Karate Kid is a real classic and probably pretty amazing watching it in the new theater room. Hello Jeff, I enjoy all of your KISS memorabilia and records collection. I would like to dive in Kiss music, I would like to ask you to suggest me where to start with my KISS albums collection. Thank you in advance mate. I wish you health.
Hello Beatlemaniac James it’s so great to meet you! Which album to start with from Kiss is kind of a very hard question to answer, if you ask 10 Kiss fans which is their favorite album you would probably get 10 different answers. But honestly I started with Kiss Alive back in 1975 which has so many fantastic songs from their first 3 albums you just can’t go wrong with starting there and moving on from that one. Destroyer would be my second pick and then moving back to pickup those first 3 studio albums KISS, HOTTER THAN HELL AND DRESSED TO KILL and working your way through the rest of the albums in order from there. This way you can see how Kiss evolves throughout the decades and the 10 different talented band members along with their amazing song writing and vocal input. Of course the choice is totally up to you with so many to pick from at once. Fortunately for me I was able to pick them up one at a time as they were released and got to know and love them waiting patiently for the next great studio, live or compilation album to be released. Please keep me posted on your decisions and if you enjoyed or not enjoyed the ones you pick! Take care my friend, stay safe and hopefully talk to you soon! ~ Jeff
@@JefferyRusnock Jeff, I really thank you for your time and guidance. I have already ordered KISS ALIVE from my local Record store. I will keep you updated... Jeffery it is awesome to hear from you my friend! Yes doing well and I hope that you are doing the same, thanks so much for checking in and leaving me a comment...I appreciate that very much! Take care and stay safe as well brother. ~ Jeff
Amazing progress. Have you root pruned the large one yet? I need to repot mine in the spring, so I'm hoping I don't kill it. I probably won't prune much of the root system since it's the first time, to minimise any stress on the tree. I've had it growing in a large container for about four years, so the root system must be quite extensive by now!
Thanks! I’m very pleased with the outcome so far on this clipping and hope it continues to grow and flourish into a grand Giant Sequoia. Yes I have only pruned the roots back on the large one only once so far last spring. It wasn’t much, some on the bottom and around the sides all the way around and I kept it in a bucket of water for a few hours afterwards to help reduce stress in case there was any. Stressed or not but it seemed to be okay and didn’t miss a beat during the process... happily! Thanks for watching and your awesome comment, best of luck with yours in the future and please let me know how you make out. Take care and talk soon.~ Jeff
That's great to hear! I'm glad yours responded well to root pruning. There really is very little information on the subject with regards to Sequoia and everything I've read makes me nervous about doing it. Mine will definitely have a substantial root system by now, but I will resist the temptation to remove much the first time. The tree is looking amazing already with a nice trunk, so fingers crossed all will go well. I will definitely let you know the results! Look forward to seeing your next update.
kodoyama If possible maybe take some photos or video of your project and post it, I’m sure it would be something a lot of people would be interested in seeing! Take care ~ Jeff
Depending on how old it is better to keep it in bright daylight light only so it doesn’t brown out on you but a few hours a day should be fine for short periods. Thanks for watching and the comment! Take care ~ Jeff
Would I be able to cut a branch off a bigger tree and get a head start on growing a redwood? 🤔 haha. I want an indoor redwood forest(3-5, and 2-4ft tall). 😍
I already did branches and a tree top that rooted so absolutely but it takes several months of keeping fresh water changes in your container several times a week! Good luck and take care! ~ Jeff
Hey Daniel! Easy two step method ! Cut and place in water! That is all I had to do for this to root, also it is good to put fresh water every few days! It took a few months but worth the wait! Thanks for watching and commenting! Take care and talk soon! ~ Jeff
It absolutely is for sure, especially with people who has seen the giants up close and in person. Thanks so much for watching and commenting! Take care my friend! ~ Jeff
I bought 2 nursery grown 2 year old Coast Redwood seedlings last September. You know September when it is HOT here in California. I put it in a 5 gallon bucket outside & all was well until about the 3rd week in OCTOBER when it should still be hot here we had a cold snap & nights got down into the low 30s. We usually only get 30s in JANUARY for a couple of weeks. I ran my trees into my garage nights but one day the leave (needles) began to turn brown then black. Yeah, frostbite. I worried & fretted over my babies but no change. By January I was sure they both were graveyard dead. But then we had a bad wind storm which took off a branch off our grown coast redwood tree & I put in on the pile with all the rest of the branches that had been broken off. After several weeks that redwood branches leaves all turned bright orange. So, I noticed my seedlings leaves WERE NOT bright orange SO I concluded maybe my seedlings in fact WERE NOT graveyard dead. So, by & by the weather warmed & about the first of April one tree showed some tiny green sprouts along its stem. Then more. Then more. After 2 weeks the other too started to show signs of life. Today they both are doing well. I have a trip to go on but when I return June 1st they are both going in the ground AND I am going to buy 2 more & put them in the ground right away. !
That is on awesome story and I probably would have thought the same as you! I read that they can handle an occasional 20 degree temperature but never tested that statement as I keep them inside all winter as I live in Pennsylvania! Take care and thanks for sharing! ~ Jeff
Hello my friend I absolutely would love to unfortunately a friend wanted the tree to plant on his farm, I will get pictures on how it is doing and do an update hopefully soon ! Thanks for watching and commenting! ~ Jeff
Hello! I would be happy to explain, it was a very simple but a long term and time consuming project! I took the entire small lower branch from my tree right to the trunk of the main tree. I just put it directly into a small container of just plain water and without missing too many days changed the water for it daily. This process took me about 9 months or so. It stayed under grow lights for several months over winter and in dappled light on my back deck in late spring, summer and fall never missing water change daily. It ok to miss a day in a week as I did but not much more than that, fresh water I believe is key. The limb from the main tree not only stayed green but was actually getting new growth on while it was in the container of plain water, no root stimulant added at all. At several months with still no roots I didn’t think they would ever start to grow but the branch was still living and thriving so I continued to change water daily and finally after close to a year it finally happened…a couple of roots pushing out and once the roots were growing well I put it in potting soil and never looked back. So the moral of the story is don’t give up as long as the branches stay green and healthy keep doing the fresh water changes even if it takes up to a year, commit yourself and it will pay off. Good luck, Thanks for watching and take care! ~ Jeff
@@JefferyRusnock that comment was godsent. I have a couple of small cuts, that i have put in water two weeks ago and didn't change the water yet. I will try changing the water daily and see what happens. Thanks. Actually getting roots on a big stem would be a dream. Did you prune it at all (to reduce foliage), or just put it in the water as is?
@@notlisztening9821 I cut the branches and put in water as is, leave the green foliage on. I believe it will help with the growth and reduce stress, plus you can keep an eye on the growth while the greens are still on. It worked for me that way and I would not hesitate to do it the same way again.
@@notlisztening9821 Just as a trial I cut the top off of a Coast Redwood and did the same thing with it and I got the same results, months of fresh water changes and almost a year later I got roots pushing out of the top tree cutting so apparently it wasn’t a fluke!
Hey James, The coast redwood grows faster at around 12 inches a year where as the Sequoia is a respectable 6 inches a year. Thanks for watching and commenting! Take care! ~ Jeff
Did you get drying on the tree sometimes? Mine is drying on some branches. How was your experience with the tree? Mine are about 5 years old and in a pot
@@emelgiefro Honestly I just popped my sequoia out of the pot wash down the dirt and roots and repotted with fresh soil that already has slow release fertilizer.
@@JefferyRusnock thanks for the tip I think repoting should be done only when the rootstake over the pot so ill watch out for that They were only reacently repoted so im ok for 2 years i think

It definitely sounds like it’s time for another update for you to do, that is if you’re not laboring for the entire holiday! Thanks so much buddy for taking a little time out of your busy honeydew list to watch and comment, I did take another small clipping from my Giant sequoia to see if lightning can strike twice and I can get another one to root.
Take care my friend and enjoy your weekend and holiday! ~ Jeff

@@JefferyRusnock Thank you Sir ! Keep us updated with your sequoia trees.
~ Jeff
Hey Jeff,
I‘m currently trying to propagate giant sequoia cuttings.

So glad to hear back from you and that things are currently under way with your project!
~ Jeff

If possible maybe take some photos or video of your project and post it, I’m sure it would be something a lot of people would be interested in seeing!

Sounds fantastic!
Can I baby giant sequoia be outside in full sun?
Depending on how old it is better to keep it in bright daylight light only so it doesn’t brown out on you but a few hours a day should be fine for short periods.
Thanks for watching and the comment!

What did you do to get the cutting to start?

My seeds just sprouted last week from my Josten's seed kit. I have three Sequoia seedlings. I can't wait until mine get that big.
I was thinking about trying a seed kit as well at some point, glad to hear that yours has worked out!
I bought 2 nursery grown 2 year old Coast Redwood seedlings last September.
You know September when it is HOT here in California. I put it in a 5 gallon
bucket outside & all was well until about the 3rd week in OCTOBER when it
should still be hot here we had a cold snap & nights got down into the low 30s.
We usually only get 30s in JANUARY for a couple of weeks. I ran my trees
into my garage nights but one day the leave (needles) began to turn brown then
black. Yeah, frostbite. I worried & fretted over my babies but no change. By
January I was sure they both were graveyard dead. But then we had a bad wind
storm which took off a branch off our grown coast redwood tree & I put in on the
pile with all the rest of the branches that had been broken off. After several weeks
that redwood branches leaves all turned bright orange. So, I noticed my seedlings
leaves WERE NOT bright orange SO I concluded maybe my seedlings in fact
WERE NOT graveyard dead. So, by & by the weather warmed & about the first of
April one tree showed some tiny green sprouts along its stem. Then more. Then
more. After 2 weeks the other too started to show signs of life. Today they both
are doing well. I have a trip to go on but when I return June 1st they are both going
in the ground AND I am going to buy 2 more & put them in the ground right away.
!
That is on awesome story and I probably would have thought the same as you! I read that they can handle an occasional 20 degree temperature but never tested that statement as I keep them inside all winter as I live in Pennsylvania!
Take care and thanks for sharing! ~ Jeff

Hmm you should make an update from this video
Hello my friend I absolutely would love to unfortunately a friend wanted the tree to plant on his farm, I will get pictures on how it is doing and do an update hopefully soon !
Thanks for watching and commenting! ~ Jeff
Could you explain how exactly you did that? I tried root stimulant and everything, but giant sequoia clippings wont grow roots.
@@notlisztening9821
I cut the branches and put in water as is, leave the green foliage on. I believe it will help with the growth and reduce stress, plus you can keep an eye on the growth while the greens are still on. It worked for me that way and I would not hesitate to do it the same way again.
@@JefferyRusnock got it, cheers!
@@notlisztening9821
Just as a trial I cut the top off of a Coast Redwood and did the same thing with it and I got the same results, months of fresh water changes and almost a year later I got roots pushing out of the top tree cutting so apparently it wasn’t a fluke!
Which grows faster? Giant sequoia or coast redwood
Hey James,
The coast redwood grows faster at around 12 inches a year where as the Sequoia is a respectable 6 inches a year.
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Take care! ~ Jeff
Did you get drying on the tree sometimes? Mine is drying on some branches. How was your experience with the tree? Mine are about 5 years old and in a pot
Yes my tree browns all the time as it grows and over the winter. I just let the them drop naturally or run my closed palm down the branches.
@@JefferyRusnock thanks
Ill keep an eye on my trees and cut dying branches
Good thing is the new ones are popping off
How often do you fertilize them?
@@emelgiefro
Honestly I just popped my sequoia out of the pot wash down the dirt and roots and repotted with fresh soil that already has slow release fertilizer.
@@JefferyRusnock thanks for the tip
I think repoting should be done only when the rootstake over the pot so ill watch out for that
