Thanks Spencer, I recently visited the Redwoods in California and got packets of seeds from the ranger outpost. They are also available from the park service on line. I was about to put my seeds directly into pots and would have missed the dormancy period in the fridge. Thanks for that important tip!
Great video! I have a lot of (and grow a lot of) Sequoia sempervirons, and it's nice to see/hear that someone from across the pond is interested in Sequoias too. You are spot on in everything you said.
Great video, thanks Spencer. I’m also from the UK, and I’m lucky that I have some sequoias near me that were planted in the 1800s. I’m collecting seeds and am going to give growing them a go :)
Hey Spencer. I'm in Texas and I am just now growing my first Giant Sequoia. I appreciated the info, very helpful. I am curious, You have 4.5k subs and you stopped posting a year ago. There is an old Greek proverb that goes “A society grows great when old men plant trees in whose shade they shall never sit." Why not keep up your passion and help old men like me keep planting those trees. Don't give up on a passion. Get back to making videos.
I am loving the comments on here about the size; fears of falling on them or houses: by the time they are that large you will be long dead. These can live longer than most civilisations: your wimpy home will barely last 100 years never mind 3000 plus years that these beasts can go for.
That's for the info. I'm in a hot humid area in America. This makes me want to naturally inoculate my seedlings to give them a better chance of staving off the fungus that's so prevalent in my area. Awesome stuff!!
Thank you for the info I love gardens my favriot type of plant is a sequia tree so Ima grow one from a pinecone frome a tree I found I got the seeds out
Spencer, I'm from California, but when we lived in W Sussex, there was a giant redwood on the property we rented. I brought a cone from it home and just found it. What do the seeds look like close up? You have an extraordinary amount of knowledge. Thanks for sharing it!
Hi Spencer, just wanted to thank you for making this video. About to use this information on the first stage of an experiment I'll be starting this month. Depending on how things go with this first stage over the coming weeks, might be contacting you for further advice during the summer. 👍🏻👍🏻
Hey Spence, Great video my friend. I bought a 6ft Redwood from Costco about 3-4 years and it hasn't grown very much. There are 180ft sugar pines close by. I'm beginning to wonder if the wonder if the RDT is fighting a losing battle for nutrients and water against the 4 other mature trees. The RWT looks anemic and I'm wondering if their are plant or tree vitamins that might help the RWT. Thanks little brother for sharing your knowledge.
Hello spencer I have not seen any new videos or updates on your seedlings and tree’s. I guess school must be keeping you pretty busy or life in general. Hopefully you’ll get more video’s out and updates on past trees 🌲. Take care

Bro, excellent vid! So after one year, what is the best time to plant them outside, spring? Also, how frequently should one water them, if you don't mind? Thanks for the vid!
Just got 25 dawn redwoods. Was told soak for 24 hours then cold stratification 2-3 weeks. Then move to a moist type of peat moss. How deep do I plant them? Derp u said 1 cm. Putting in damp paper towel is better than soil?
Thank you so so much for this video, i really appreciate you verry much, you speak so well about this subject, but one thing, try to stray away from saying (so, um, yeah,) it really dont matter at all, it just improves the ingagement a little more, just take a momment, and carry on with your awsome talk, and think what you say, Awsome vid, thanx again, verry much.
I think they will kill most other trees around them once their root system gets bigger and are probably not too good around foundations, pipes, gas lines, etc... Nice video, great work.
Hello! I have a 2 inches red California Giant sequoia. It has recently changed its color (it has faded). The stem is no longer red but brownish and the leaves are very pale. Do you know what that could be? I live in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Thanks a lot!
Maybe it is rotting or needs fresh air? If it isnt cold out put it outside on a warm sunny day out of direct sunlight and adapt it to outside conditions
@@spencersnursery1547 thank you so much for quick reply! Today I received my sequoia sempervirens seeds also from the eBay but store is called www.omcseeds.com. with the seeds I've got papers with directions to use and it's says ' you can sow them all year round, but because the plants in temperate regions like Europe will grow best in summer, it might be best to do the sowing in (early) spring. I think I shocked mine, too much sun too soon. I guess they need a lot of time to adjust to the sun since in the wild they grow under the canopy of very large trees.
I've made all the mistakes. Too much sun-heat. Too compacted soil. Too much water because I had them out in really bad rain. Too well draining soil that didn't hold enough moisture. Fertilized too soon. Up-potted to a large pot too quickly. haha I recently got 80% of my goldrush dawns (ebay) and coasts (sheffield's) to grow, phenomenal, but then I gave them fertilizer too soon and killed them. Man that was a terrible day. I had at least 80 of them, in 3" containers. I think I've finally gotten it figured out now. Only question is can they survive in the ground here. I live in Texas and the weather is basically everything but volcanoes and earthquakes. I'm in red clay here but am moving to an area with black clay and more heat/wind/freezing..so not their ideal area. It's slow draining but some of the best soil in the U.S. I'm amazed at what earthworms can grow in because this stuff is like rock yet they're in it. So I use a 3" wide auger bit and break it up while adding organic material and maybe gypsum to it. I highly recommend the auger bit for mixing as well. I think what's most important is when I plant them. Have to get them in the ground early enough so they're established for summer or winter. I've already planted quite a few things including dawns and sequoias and things like very hardy afhgan pines and they're looking OK so far. I'll let you know if they survive summer. I'm really trying to utilize partial shade. Coast reds are interesting because although the dawns seem hardier, the Coasts at times grow faster, at least in my experience. The dawns are fun to grow from cuttings though. The one tree I have failed to grow from seed is the dogwood. I don't know why but it's very hard.
Hey i do have a question. I am now on my third run of germinating seeds and the first two times all of them died over the span of a couple months, even though i always try to keep the soil moist. I am now starting to face the same problem again. I had ~70 seedlings a couple months ago, now they are down to 30 and some of them have lost their color a bit and a starting to look crooked. I can't give them direct sun, because they will immediately wither and i can't expose them to any cold, because again i will just lose them all instantly. This is so mega frustrating, could you go more indepth on what kind of care they exactly need to thrive?
Maybe overwatering? They need to be moist but not wet, seedlings dont use much water when little so it will take longer to dry out.thats all I can think of as it can make them rot at the root.hope this helps
Hi, Thank you for the great video. Can you sell me a few seeds of sequoia? I am not sure that I can buy proper seeds in my country. Thank you in advance.
Yes you have to get the seeds stratified before planting or you will have no success. Also did you know cones from the giant sequoia only release there seeds after a forrest fire they literally stay on the tree for over 20 years waiting for a fire, once there is a fire only then will the tree release its seeds, weird huh lol
Did you guys over there know that the Sequoia forest in northern California is older then the Rocky mountain range. Also often they fall over and there branches grow into a line of clones that are actually the original tree so some trees could be many times older then we think.
