The first 12,5 years of two giant sequoias

  • Once upon a time a long, long time ago (12,5 years) in a place far, far away (in Holland; Europe), two feet below sea level, two little sequoias started to grow.
    And now, 12,5 years later, the sky is the limit…….
    The seeds were bought in 2006 in the Grant Village Visitor Center in Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Park in California, USA. The music is Beethoven Symphony no. 5.

      @@Nephila23 yes it rains very much here. I meant coast redwoods need more water than giant sequoias. And actually, most of the water they receive comes from fog, which condenses on the trunk, and waters the tree. So, there really isn't any place on the earth that receives enough rainfall for coastal redwoods.

      Sure, but keep a close eye on them. They need CONSISTENT moisture. Like water them every day. Rain alone won't be enough. They grow well on a small strip in California, due to the summer fog in the area.

      The Sequoiadendron giganteum (giant sequoia) is grown in all zones. Zones refer to climate. Extreme environments like low desert and far north present challenges for the sequoias. Specimen sequoias can be found in most climates indicating that the species is remarkably adaptable. A sequoia can suck the ground dry on a warm day. If there is no natural means of replenishing the soil moisture consistently the grower must supplement the sequoias with irrigation. Failure to keep the soil moist results in a dead tree. Sequoias require moist, rich, balanced ph, and well-drained soil. Permanently swampy or muddy soil will not work.

      From www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=1151 "... whereas the giant sequoia is more likely to grow about two feet in height per year throughout its first fifty to one hundred years. On the other hand, the massive trunk of the giant sequoia continues to grow - increasing its overall volume - at a rate far surpassing that of any other tree. Growth rings one half inch in thickness are common in young giant sequoias under optimal conditions. This amounts to an increase of one inch of diameter per year. And rapid growth is likely to continue even when the trunk has become one hundred or more feet in circumference. By then the annual growth rings may have become narrower, but the overall volume of growth may be continuing at the same or an increased rate."

This one will be the giant of the neighborhood. It was an experiment on my part. I had learned that cypress seeds should be planted in soil that will be wet or damp for at least 3 months. I dk much about trees but i bet that the fact that he didn't untangle the root ball made the tree less efficient

    From what I’ve read, this tree will eventually struggle in this area. Part of the reason they strive in the northwest is the fog. The trees grow so tall that they struggle to pull water up to the top. The fog provides much needed moisture for the canopy. They won’t have that in most areas.

      These two trees won't be tall enough to have that problem for a great many years / decades / centuries, and I suspect they would just cease getting substantially taller if the transportation of water to the crown was becoming too difficult.

      That sounds like the related Coast Redwood ( Sequoia) to me- not this species ( Sequoiadendron). Coast redwoods live ( as the name suggests) much closer to the coast in Ca, where fog is a much more common occurrence than inland at higher elevations- where Sequoiadendron is native. Sequoiadendron ( also known as Giant Sequoia, grows well in much more variable conditions around the world.
      I could be wrong, but I do grow multiple trees of both at my home in Washington state

    Does the Dutch government allow foreign seeds and plants to be brought into the Netherlands?

    • @martinvn123
      @martinvn123  3 года назад

      No that is not allowed. There are all kinds of rules for which plants and trees may and may not be imported. It depends on what kind of plant trees they are and what countries they come from. Sequoia seed is allowed. file:///C:/Users/Van%20Neck/Downloads/Register+Invoerverboden+bij+import.pdf

    What exactly do you mean 12,5 years?

    • @Sol-Amar
      @Sol-Amar Год назад

      In some countries they use a comma instead of a period as the decimal point. It's also the reverse for how we use commas in large numbers (thousands separator).
      USA: 3.14 & 3,000,000.
      Other countries: 1,99 & 2.591.900
      Or they'll just use space i.e. 10 000 000
      So, 12,5 years = 12.5 years.
