JGW 01 - How to Propagate Cuttings of a Sequoia Tree PART 1

  • After a recent storm in Slovakia I was able to pick some fresh Sequoia Giganteum cuttings and a bunch of cones with seeds. I am growing these trees from seeds but a cutting is a much faster way of propagating a tree that could later be used for a bonsai or simply plant in the wild. There are a few Sequoia trees in Slovakia (Europe) as strange as it sounds and I always keep checking them when I go around and this time I was lucky. Getting a branch of those is normally impossible but a heavy storm has "provided" me with a little help.
I took around 200 cuttings from smaller to bigger ones and my focus is on the smaller chubbier and stronger cuttings. I am using a rooting hormone Stimulax III made in the Czech Republic. I am using this one for more types of trees and it seems to be working.
The results of this experiment will be visible after maybe 2 months and as soon as I see roots I will upload a PART 2 video so stay TUNED and SUBSCRIBE for the updated video! :) Click LIKE if you find this video and want to see more. This is my FIRST video ever and I will upload a new video once a week covering a lot more about my gardening tips ranging from how to grow plants and trees from seeds, what heat matt to choose, grow lights, when and how to collect seeds, how to care for plants and much more.
If you want me to cover some topic please feel free to write any suggestions in the comments. I love to work on any great ideas and test it for you.
UPDATE: non of the cuttings rooted :( and I kept them rooting for about 4 months on 3 different places. The ones outside lasted longest and even grew some new branches but never had a single root.

So you are growing a tree in Slovakia huh, I just bought a weekend house in the mountains in Serbia and I bought a Sequoiadendron seedling which I plan on planting there, your success gives me hope mine will grow. I also planted (in October) 3 Douglas Fir seedlings, a Dawn Redwood, White Pine (which are native) and some Hemlock Trees.

These are giant sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum). They’re in a separate genus to Sequoia

You mentioned that sequoia seeds have a <15% germination rate, but that is only true for old seeds. If you find a wholesaler or bulk seller that can guarantee the age of their seeds, get some that are less than a year old and you will likely have closer to 40-65%. Just make sure to give them a short period of cold exposure, since longer periods increase the chances of rotting. Soak them, give them 14 days in the fridge, then into some soil. You should see them sprout in the next few weeks.

Music is stupid. Makes it hard to hear you and contributes nothing to an informative video.

California redwood trees can be propagated from cuttings. It takes two years + and requires expert skills. Heat helps but these do not root like deciduous trees do.

It’s quicker to grow from branches but like any other tree the diversity becomes non existent for the species. This is when a single disease that effects one tree can wipe out a population. The genetics are identical.
