- Planting 30 Giant Sequoia seeds on my windowsill i got a 50% germination rate.... so i have also planted some Coast Redwood seeds too
You can see how these seedlings have progressed a year on • Growing Giant Sequoia ...
So nearly 12 months on - have a look at this update to see how my Sequioa seedlings have progressed. I planted out another 20 seeds taking the total to 40 seeds, 24 survived through to October 2019 and then 16 survived their first winter out doors .... here it is .... ruclips.net/video/_EACZ2ZGYM0/видео.html
I’m from California, and I love that you’ve taken these giants to your region.

Fantastic. I never knew that. I hope I can come to the UK and see it some day. I live a few hours from Kings Canyon
.
Create a mini greenhouse for your sequoia seedlings, they thrive in high humidity but be careful with overwatering as well.. only spray when topsoil is dry and make sure to use a sandier mix, not heavy soil. I love to start sequoia seeds in a rotisserie chicken greenhouse container, then transfer strong enough seedlings w large taproot to individual containers and cover those with a Pepsi bottle with bottom cut out and top screwed off.. perfect greenhouse
This year I've managed to germinate about 10 sequoia from a first generation Welsh giant sequoia that must be about 140 years old.
This makes them a second generation British Sequoia, which is pretty special! Currently am still keeping them inside on my windowsill but am wondering when to put them outside.
Thank you!!! I’ve been trying for many years now to plant seeds from my local giant sequoia located in a park in my hometown of Visby in Sweden with varying success. This method is a game changer and my success rate has gone up dramatically. I have made one little change though, instead of placing them on a paper towel i actually plant them all in a tray, put plastic over it and put the tray in the refrigerator. After two weeks i take the tray out and after 7-10 days they start to germinate. Considering that the germination rate in the seeds i work with is under 10% this is a more effective approach. Also, i find that the seeds that germinate in the soil are in better shape than those that germinate on paper towel and then placed in pots. I really hope that all the sequoiadendron giganteum- enthusiast out there watch this video before trying to plant their own trees, they will be so much more successful. Thanks again and good luck to you all!!
Mate, I've been trying to grow these a few times buy very unsuccessful following the experts advice on cold stratification, they always failed, so seen this video 3 weeks ago and thought I'd try your method and it WORKED, noticed 3 have germinated out of 10 so far. So thank you very much for posting this video
Haha.. well done... your reply has brought a smile to my face
I didn't bother with the cold stratification and ended up with about fifteen saplings!
После замачивания, для лучшей всхожести, обрабатывайте красным лазером каждое семя, ребята.
I'm going to start growing these and picking places to plant them around Ireland. 100 seeds on Amazon about €18. Cheaper if you live in the UK. I am in love with these trees.
seeds are cheaper on ebay ... but on both ebay and amazon the quality of seeds is variable
Love it be sure to find a safe place out of the city for them to grow when, you plant them or they won’t replicate.
I love your philosophy, replace the tree !
Your stratification process seems really fast and yield good results. 50% germination is quite spectacular. Where did you read about that process?
Super! How are they doing now? I also just planted a 3 cm giant in my forest garden in Sweden. I make update video's.
Nice ...
I'm lucky, I just picked up some cones from the giant Sequoia's in my local park. just put them in the fridge today

Can you please tell me what season you are in when you successfully grew the seeds? It is just about to come into winter here in Australia and we have what looks like viable seed pods, opening up on our sequoia.
Which season of the year is good for stratification? What substrate do you use for planting?
Did you water the soil daily in the time between you potted the seeds and when they began to sprout? Approx 2 weeks? Or did you let the soil go bone dry? Cheers
Greetings from across the pond! I’ve germinated some giant sequoias in a very similar setup to yours. I used pots similar in size to yours, and I’m worried that these pots are stunting their growth. Do you have any tips to reactivate their growth? How did your seedlings turn out?
I moved mine into bigger pots as soon as i saw the roots poking out of the bottom of the plant pots. Keeping the seedlings in small pots DEFINITELY stunts their growth ... My seedlings are now 18 months old, and have had a full 12 months out doors and have outgrown their 3 pots. Am going to plant them out in my local park at the beginning of next spring - and will do an update video then
Fishing Fiend thanks for sharing! Whatever became of the stunted seedlings?
hi! When you plant the seeds, you put the seeds in the soil or you put them at the surface?
In the soil about 5mm down
Did you soak them before placing in freezer ?
no - I just put them straight into the freezer for 48 hours - then soaked them on kitchen roll in a box at the back of fridge for 2 weeks...
why the sprigs of the sequoia sprout darken dry?
tell me , you wait for the seeds in the fridge to root,
or plant the seed after 2 weeks in the ground whether or not it has rooted?
i did not wait for the seeds to show a root.... i planted them all after 2 weeks in the fridge
@@fishing-fiend ok
I will plant them now
and I'll tell you the results...
@@draganbabic1030 Lurking for results if you can provide an update in a week?
bad luck for the second time. maybe this seed in serbia is not of good quality
sounds a bit complicated, I've never had to simulate wintering with anything I've planted...will be a cool experiment I guess
When you did 48 hours in the freezer were they wet or dry?
I think dry
How do I get some of the seeds to plant? Drop a link if possible. Thank you
EBay
Hi how you get the seds.iwant some secuoya tree
Sir, you put the seeds dry in the freezer? After that you give them water and put them in the fridge for two weeks. Correct?
Yes, literally follow as he says, I've done exactly the same method as him. Use the same equipment and you will see results, I planted 168 sequoias 2 weeks ago and 8 have just started to sprout in the past two days
@@cd7246 Thank you. I'll try also.
@@johnywolfs104 very polite man
what does the freezer do to the seeds?
Simulate winter I would assume. Going from completely frozen and then into the fridge and out kind of simulates what happens in spring.
What soil do you use?
just standard cheap compost from my local garden centre
do you have a permit for those trees mate?
No .. why .. do i need a permit
@@fishing-fiend yes there going to find you
@@lucashenry9734 Hey man this if for personal use...not commercial
@@ralphchristianson NO
@@lucashenry9734 lol are you jealous? xD
Do you have any redwoods for sale you can post?
Are these giant sequoia or coastal redwoods?
These are giant sequoia... i couldn't get the coastal redwoods to germinate
Any update on these
Why is it so difficult to grow them yourself? I've read that tons of people tried and failed. Is this why the giant redwoods are so rare? Because they're delicate and hard to grow?
I'm currently growing a few, and generally they have a very low germination rate and don't survive easily to 10 years or so. Also, they're regularly cut down by mistake for Christmas trees. After 10 years, in remote areas, they're generally good, though.
@@interestinglyinterested7972 I had a few germinate but all died to mould. Any ideas on how to avoid that? I didn't even water that often so idk what I did wrong
@@kenneth31251yea sprinkle Cinnamon on the soil. Should fix your problem.
