JGW 04 - Spring in my Garden - Working on wood with HUGE Circural Saw
Spring is here and I can finally start working in and cleaning the garden. This weekend I am cutting all the branches from the trees I have trimmed or cut down. Also some week to be cut for the next season =) Gas will probably be super expensive so maybe a good time to prepare for "no gas" reality :)

Well Spring is here and garden needs cleaning. And one of the most important things is to have some. Even more important is to know what pots you have and how many. So today we went to the garden and did some sorting, some breaking, some cleaning and so on. My wife and mother joined me later to speed up the process.

JGW 01 - How to Propagate Cuttings of a Sequoia Tree PART 1

After a recent storm in Slovakia I was able to pick some fresh Sequoia Giganteum cuttings and a bunch of cones with seeds. I am growing these trees from seeds but a cutting is a much faster way of propagating a tree that could later be used for a bonsai or simply plant in the wild. There are a few Sequoia trees in Slovakia (Europe) as strange as it sounds and I always keep checking them when I ...

Hey i want to ask a question. I have 4 of gigant sequoia trees they are about 50cm high i got them from a nursery They were green and now they started drying out and yellowing I repoted them a while ago and put then in a very sunny spot Good news is that i saw new branches starting I also got coniferous trees feed mix What are some of your tips to slow or reverse the damage? I water them and let them be in a very sunny spot and i saw improvements the drying stopped id say Before they were in a spot with half shade and half sun so i think that was the problem and small pot before replanting Thank you

the only way to save trees I found is to replant them immediately into a bigger pot, put outside, use rain water , don´t overwater or don´t over fertilise, put away from other pines and especially away from shadows. But what works best is to plant them directly in the soil in your garden till they regenerate. I learned that nothing absolutely nothing can compare to the regular garden soil... it is the perfect mix and conditions for every plant. laso the humidity is exactly what the plants need and it´s really hard to achieve in a pot no matter how much on tries. I had trees in pots and in the soil I can tell you that the ones in pots grew like 10cm and had lots of problem but the ones in soild are now 1m tall! And they look super healthy.

You mentioned that sequoia seeds have a <15% germination rate, but that is only true for old seeds. If you find a wholesaler or bulk seller that can guarantee the age of their seeds, get some that are less than a year old and you will likely have closer to 40-65%. Just make sure to give them a short period of cold exposure, since longer periods increase the chances of rotting. Soak them, give them 14 days in the fridge, then into some soil. You should see them sprout in the next few weeks.

Hi, how big is it and is it planted in the soil directly or is it in a pot? Where do you live? I noticed that after replanting my trees directly to the soild their growing speed increaed 10x and they are nice and greenish, very healthy. To compare 2 trees i left in the pot same age are now 40cm the ones directly in soil are almost 1m tall! I planted them in the soil last year and sinca that they grew like 60cm while the one in the pot grew maybe 5cm ... the dfifference is very significant and I assume it´s because of the humidity balance between soil in the ground and pot soil which tends to dry out a lot faster or is too wet on other days never ideal. BUT I planted 2 small trees in very big pots and they are comparably strong to the ones in directly in the soil. So my advice is to replant them eithr directly in the garden or replant them in way bigger pots. I had to get some supr big pots each is like 50cm. The ones sufferin have maybe 22cm pots. Watering is difficult but I guess the size of the pot, the space for the roots and more balanced humidity has a bigger effect. Also these trees don´t repson good to over fertilizing. I only use rain water for them or rain itself. I will have to replant them next year becasue I am afraid they will stay there forever if I don´t. The plants also don´t like to be in small pots in the winter becasue the hate cold on the roots and one surprising fact move them away from regular pines, I noticed some nasty funghi has been killing my little trees that is found only when they are near my pines. So my current location is very sunny and has lot´s of fresh wind. Seeems the trees love the new location.

California redwood trees can be propagated from cuttings. It takes two years + and requires expert skills. Heat helps but these do not root like deciduous trees do. In general most conifers are propagated by seed or grafting. Junipers do well as cuttings but pines and redwood trees not so much. Root cuttings may be a viable option. I have a single “loma prieta” coastal redwood tree. These are really hard to find and I got lucky when a friend sold me his. I’ve been trying to get this to root from cuttings. So far 18 months and the best I have is callus formation. I just grafted a few branches as well. It’s not a good idea to graft trees that are meant to grow really tall but I don’t know how else to propagate this very unique redwood tree I have.

THe cuttings from what I learned as some peopel succeeded you get a 15cm tree "maybe" after several months of struggling where a seed you basically plant NOW in jan/feb outside and within 6 months you have a strong growing seedling. They arefast growers in one year they will grow as big as the cutting so my reccomendation is to go for SEEDS and I am also doing it + they are cheap and getting sequoia cutting is also a big question .. where??.. :D :)

Last year I collected trash bags full of green cones, dried out the cones, and harvested the seeds. Then I stratified them but I don't know if I have enough room in my fridge. I got quite a few seedlings but I had l some big unexpected events in my life and couldn't keep watering them during the really dry summer here, so they all died. Hoping for more success this year. They will naturally stratify and the growth rate is even better. The cones naturally open when there is warm and sunlight so my method is using or creating the same conditions but with a practical touch: put them in some open cardboard box and put above some heater. They will start opening very quickly and the most loose seeds will fall out naturally. Once fully opened (you will know) take them in some palstic box or jar and shake them heavily till there are no more seeds falling out. Easy =) as said above plant some directly outside can be in a raised bed that you can put a foil above or some sun blocker later on. Firstly to keep them humid secondly to prevent them from drying out too quick in summer. I would put a plastic foil above the bed keeping some 10cm space when the temperature start warming up to keep warmth and mopisture so you have maximum seeds sprouting. Planting them just 1-2cm deep (1 inch). Watering if dry do not let it dry out or no seed will sprout. Good luck :) I wish I have some more trees around but sadly there arejust few and even those are 1-2 hours drive away with few cones if any at all.

I read your comment on my channel today and so sorry to hear the bad news about your cuttings. I also thought about throwing my cutting away several times during the process but I always saw new green growth even though I saw no rooting taking place so I pressed forward and so glad I did. It took close to six months just in a jar of water to keep it hydrated with continuous water changes and then one day the roots happened. I do plan on doing it again over this fall and winter time and it will lead into the spring time. This time I plan on photos each week of the progress to document the entire procedure and that will show exactly how long it will take! Take care my friend and keep up the great work! ~ Jeff

In Slovakia this tree can withstand -25°C (-13 f) no problem my little seedlings survived first winter outside in pots and that was -18°C ;) .. this tree in the wild can take -30°C so no need to worry about a little cold ;)

I've seen one other person one here who has done Sequoia cuttings and been successful. He tried for 2 years. He did do a very different strategy. I'm interested how yours turns out

Hi it didn´t work. I have not made a video with the result but it simply did not work. The cutting survived like 4 months but non of them released roots. I have some info that it needs to be done in a specific time of the year. But I have no access to new cuttings however I have my own seedlings growing :)

Well Red, what is the successful approach! Do you have a link? Any concerns about lack of tap root and any long term stability issues for a large mature tree?

@@bensolnick3103 let me find the link real quick and I'll edit this comment Edit: I'm going to post 2 links 1 is from early on in his experiment so you see what it looked like then. His channel is mostly about classic rock but every few months he does an update. Go to 4 minutes or so for his Sequoia cuttings for first clip here's link ruclips.net/video/W2Z9aunuK9M/видео.html And #2 link is most recent update with several new cuttings off his first cutting. He explains a lot more about what he did in this video. So this one will give you far more information. Hope this helps ruclips.net/video/RT7MM4oAYlc/видео.html

Hi In Slovakia this tree is let´s say RARE and only grows as a sole tree so it means there is no support against winds and storms. All the trees have broken tops or are hit by lightning. We are also a heavy storm area with strong winds. We had a pine that was like 20m tall next to the house and it had to go down. Sequoia can grow 80m so this is the reason I can´t plant them in any close proximity to houses. I keep all my trees in pots as bonsai or think I will plant a few in the forest near by.

What time of year is best to take cuttings?

    • @RedDragon91
      @RedDragon91 2 года назад

The other person I've seen do a cutting took his in the summer but he also said he didn't feel like it mattered. He also used a different strategy. He kept his cutting in water with rooting aid. It was a 2 year experiment.
