Harley quoted me 4 hours to install heated grips.
I did it myself following this very video. Took me 6 hours but I took my time to make sure I didn't end up with any "extra" parts when I was done.
Bought myself an ignition alignment tool to avoid issues there.
Grips work great.
Great install video . I personally know how much work goes into making a video and can honestly say I appreciate your effort thank you
Great video Shawn!
Precious "how-to" info that is gonna help a lot of us SGS owners (current and near future) to save quite a few bucks!
I know the effort it takes, and I can only imagine how much harder it is to film and describe as well.
Thank you for taking the time for this! And for sharing!
Ride safe!
+Euripides Masakis - Thank you very much for the kind words! You're Awesome!!
Yes great video, any chance for a part number?
Big thanks. I have a 2018 Ultra Limited Anniversary edition. It came with heated grips but they've become worn and sticky from use. Perused RUclips and found your video. It didn't show or explain everything but it worked well enough that I was able to get the job done in about 2 hours. Keep up the good work.
I have spun my ignition switch and had to have dealer realign, so your mention of the importance of not misaligning and the small brake switch that could break is so important and you are spot on for those small but important details.
I don't think that the small brake switch is as delicate and prone to breakage as the earlier years were. I put chrome levers on and ( after a RUclips ) remember them as going right on without having to use the small piece of cardboard any longer. Videos like this have to be impacting business at the dealers!
Thank you for sharing, your video pointing out location of throttle side power connection helped me resolve where to plug in that second wire coming from left hand side. Before this video, I could not find that second wire location, Thanks again.
You're welcome!
Thanks Gary!! 👍
Great tutorial! Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Thank you for the video. Very informative! And I like how you showed every step in detail for newbs like me I’ll be trying this on my 09. Hopefully it’s not too different.
After trying to unlock the handlebars using the screwdriver as you showed, I found I was able to remove the ignition by pushing that button underneath WITHOUT locking the handlebars. That sure made things easier. VERY helpful video though. Thanks
This made this a lot easier!
I use that real thin welding spool wire to chase through those handlebars. It works really good. You do a really good job with the delivery of precise and useful information! This was an excellent do!
Brilliant video Shawn! Love how delicate you are with each step. I'll try to be like that. Lol. Nice bike too! Thanks!
Probably the best guide on youtube, thanks
Great how to ! No Bs straight to the point and great little pointers. Thank you!
Hi Shawn, did this yesterday and.... you glossed over how much fiddling it takes to put the ignition back in, took me about 30mins just jiggling it about :) other than that worked good, i ran a fish up the bar from the centre hole and pulled the wires through with that. Thanks, oh and we have the same bike again!! traded in the denim black sgs for the M8 hot rod red in September but didnt get delivery until January here in Scotland.
Nice detailed video Shawn, I'll use this when I install my heated grips! Thanks!
excellent video!!! came just to confirm that i didnt need the jumper harness and stayed for the whole video
Great video! You remind me so much of myself with being so careful so as not to scratch or damage anything. Fortunately, my bike came with the heated grips. They're now a "must have" on all future bikes. "2" works will in 40° temps with thin gloves.
Really appreciate the thorough video, with attention to detail, subscribed within 2 minutes! 👍
Dear Shawn. What a terrific instructional video. Clear filming, well narrated and explained. I really enjoyed watching it and feel that when I do decide to get heated grips for my bike, I can revisit your video and confidently give it a go. Regards Steve
Wow. Superb video. I'm lucky in that my bike already has the heated grips. I would not hesitate to try it though. Thank you for taking the time to do this.
Shawn... not telling you how to do it because I realize as a bike mechanic you know far more than me but I found out when I replaced the heated grips on my Limited..If you take the screws out that hold your switch panel on. You don't have to take the key switch off . There is enough room to slide it backwards and unplug it and take it off.
You turn the ignition to the locked position and turn the bars all the way to the right
+Jack Neville - There may be more room between the dash panel and the tank on a limited, but it's 100% impossible to do that with the tank installed on Project Rushmore SGS... See 9:00 on the video for the lack of clearance.
Thanks for watching and commenting Jack!
Shawn I agree with Jack not trying to tell you how to do it but i have had mine off several times on my rushmore sg and not pulled the ignition switch. It is just like you said the ignition is very delicate and has to line up and i didnt want to chance it had cover off in no time if you angle the bars it will slide out without touching the tank. Great trick running the wires never thought about air compressor
Got mine off of my 2017 limited also without removing switch.
MuncieBill another guy you tube ride it wrench it shows easy way to do it that is where I first seen it
Great video Mr. Smoak! I am replacing damaged heated grips on my 2014 Ultra Limited and your step-by-step video gave me the confidence to do it. Much appreciated.
Shawn seeing as I live in the Great White North I will probably install this kit on my new bike. Watching your video I think I am going to try it with just tilting the fairing forward and leaving the ignition in and just loosen the little cover below the key by removing the two screws so it can slide back a tad and wiggle around if needed. Worth a try anyways.
The grips work amazingly well, and can go up to unbearable heat levels. Lol I only go to level 2 of 6 on the coldest days...
Thanks Doug!!
We’re you able to do it without messing with the ignition?
Thanks cause there is like no 2017 videos out yet, but i pulled my ignition switch in the middle position, might have been safer also if i pulled my battery wire also. Look forward to all your vlogs. Thank you very much.
Excellent video!
Great video, thanks for posting! There weren't any other good videos on installing heated grips until you posted yours. I watched a demo at the local Harley shop install some yesterday and you actually have a simpler solution. I'm excited to get mine on now!
Thank you for the perfect install. Such Care.
I have a 2015 Street Glide and I just put heated grips on my bike this winter. The kit I got makes me run the power on the outside. It would of been nice to know there was another kit where the power was going inside the bars instead of the outside. I also see that Harley updated the wiring because on my bike there is no power running up to the fairing so you can simply plug and play. I had to take my gas tank off and run the power cable it the management cable tray underneath. Your job was much easier than mine. Mine took multiple hours ha.
Hiya Shawn, thank you for this super install video. I’m not sure if you get notifications on historic videos but if you do I just wanted to tell you that my new 2020 SGS arrives this week. I’ve been researching for months to help me decide wether to go for a sport glide or a street glide and the SGS won.....in Scorched orange and silver flux.
You’ve helped plenty with my homework on this Shawn so I just wanted to thank you and I will definitely be doing this install.
All the best and thank you.
Kind regards
Beans.
thanks for sharing the video. you made it easy to see and did a very detailed walk through.
Crazy, my Harley heated grips had one internal and one external wire on clutch side. Guess different manufacturers did them different
Nice video Shawn! Wish I would have seen this before I installed heated grips on my 2017 SGS. My local dealer sold me the wrong kit... I had the kit with the external wire with it that needed to be run back to the battery. They assured me I had the correct part number for my '17 street glide, come to find out there is old product being sold in new packaging.
Do you know the part number of the heated grips that you used?
You need to post some more riding vids man ! Idk where you live and how winter is treating y'all but I enjoy watching your riding vids man.
+EzEddie - I have an SGS riding video to be released in the morning..!
Thanks Eddie!!
Easy peasy it is. Thanks for the tips and walk through. A job well done.
Hey Shawn, that was cool,😃👍......it's so hot here in Australia I need something that sprays snow over the rider☀️😩
+Paul Sullivan - Maybe we can split our weather patterns and we'd both have a happy medium..? Lol
Thanks Paul!!
I will be installing those same grips on my 2016 streetglide but I have the mini ape hangers hidden wiring on mine. I hope the grip wiring is long enough..I have the heated jacket and glove liners, I dont like the thickness of the gloves with the liners..great video, thanks shawn.
I fed weed whacker string through the bars and taped the wires and fished them that way easy peasy
Thank You! So much for posting this video!
You saved the day for me installing H-D heated grips on my 2016 Tri-Glide!
The Harley-Davidson directions made no sense-at all!
Wish I had seen this first... the HD site had me purchase a connector kit (Harley Davidson Touring Electrical Connection Kit 69200722) for no reason. But that shouldn't surprise me.
Really appreciate this vid. Recently picked up these grips and this will make the install much easier. Great idea about the compressor with the wires.
Shawn, you are an amazing technician.
Thanks for the time and effort to put this together. Well done!👍🏽
JC Galiano - Thank you very much JC..!
Shawn you made that look real easy, but I wouldn't have the confidence to do that ,the ignition would freak me out haha , all look real complicated ,without doubt that street glide is the prettiest cycle I have ever seen 🤔,same as the one I sat on in Chesterfield HD cool as hell 💕also your explanation of why the left bar heats up slower then the right has puzzled me for years 😳you sir are a steely eyed rocket man 👏I can watch hours of this kinda Vlog they are very interesting for a mechanically challenged chap such as I LOL best wishes .
Would pulling the tank off be an option rather than pulling the ignition apart to access the wiring slot on the bars? Great video, glad you took the time to do this, thankyou
Yes, absolutely.
Thanks Gerry!! 👍
Shawn you make it look nice and easy, great video.
Thanks, that’s a great video!!! The paper instructions had me scratching my head! Can you clarify, the extra wires that come with the grips, are those to extend the wire reach for taller bars?
That's an adapter harness to run back to the battery for models that don't had the pre-wired harness in the fairing, which also requires the Harley Heated Grips Connection Kit 69201599... If you had tall enough bars, this could be an option I'm assuming..?
Thanks Zach!
NIce job, I know it adds a hassle if you need to get back in there again but I'd be tempted to shrink wrap every connection and esp. heated grips which always make me a little nervous.... just having the heated gear on board makes me nervous. Maybe shrink would make it worse, trapping the heat, I dunno. New stuff is all built properly though, I hafta admit, and I expect this fear of mine will pass with experience and time. I worked and have lived aboard ship a long time and once as an SR tech we rescued a fella whose liveaboard was fully involved... in 10 minutes that man was going to be in the water and dead in another 10 after that from the cold up here in BC. I'll never forget the way that ship burned... About the appearance of 'more chrome' on your red 'Glide, between a black bike and a red bike with same amount of chrome, the red bike will always 'appear' to have more chrome because the black bike's other black surfaces, frame, motor pieces, link together and take over the 'weighting' that our brain unconsciously gives what we're looking at. It's why black bikes can often appear 'cleaner' - they've one less 'colour'. Just like a B&W photograph, you're only looking at shades, not the tones that exist in true colours.
nice install I have not done this mod on my 2016 SGS since I live in Ga. I will stay with my twin cam glad you like the M -8
Oh, I'm so going to do this! Thanks, Shawn!!!
+Brian Stoffer - Cool! You will love these heated grips!
Thanks Brian!
Nice work Mr....ignition switch looks a little tricky
Very informative and enjoyable watch 👍🏻👍🏻
+Andy Smedley - Thanks Andy!!
When installing on a 2015 Road Glide the wires are behind the Tach, so the fairing doesn't need to be removed
You're a legend Shawn well done. You make it look easy. I enjoy all of your vlogs very much thank you for sharing.
Nice step x step install vid. However, I'm so glad my Ultra Limited came with the heated grips from the factory! :-)
Thank you for sharing, I have a 2012 Electra Glide Classic. I would like to take on the task at this point. I hope it's pre-wired!
and I'm changing my handlebars and needed to see the instal for the R&R
I bet your right about dealers charging 3 hours labor at $110 an hour what's said with flat rate is the mechanics probably only get between 18-25 per flat rate hour.
Great video. I am about to attempt this and install a set of Kahuna grips on my '17 Ultra Limited. I was wondering if this can be done without touching the ignition? It seems once the fairing falls ahead, the hole in the handlebar is accessible. Thanks.
very well done...
Well Done Shawn! Thanks for all your effort!
Nice vid. Sad heated grips aren't standard on a $25 + thousand bike...
+Edward Ballow - One would surely think..!
Thanks Edward!
They dont come standard on the $35k CVO Street Glide either, only on the Ultras
If they were standard, that 25+ bike would be 26+
@@ShawnSmoak
Another '17 Ultra upgraded thanks to this video, thanks! I'd like to add emphasis to the part about being extremely careful after taking the power/lock switch out of the steering head- be sure to follow the steps exactly or you will end up in 'lock cylinder hell'.....and it will take time and effort to correct. Do Not ask me how I know this. 😐
Awesome video bud, love your videos and I wanna thank you for such great content and awesome vlogs :) Keep up the great work..
I am definitely going to do this!! I'm not a mechanic, but I do have patience. I really think I can do it!! Thanks so much for posting!! What kind of jack is that you use? The one I have doesn't fit under my bike very easily. Thanks again!!
Shawn, do you think someone could get by with just pulling that left grip off and the wires through the bars for taking heated grips off (after disconnecting under Street Glide front fairing)? I want to transfer them to another bike.
Chrome fits the bike well 👍🏻
Great Video Shawn
+Norcal Dynarider - Thanks!!
Hi Shawn. Great video. Are the grips still functioning well (June 2019)? Read some reviews on HD website that they don’t work well after time.
Still going strong..!
Thanks Tim!
Very impressive. Are you HD technician to be able to do it so easily....
Thank you for your covering this. I installed my heated grips as you did yours, but then I see a video by Doc Harley saying that these connections under the fairing shouldn't be used for heated grips. Says they can't handle that kind of current and will possibly leave you stranded. Is this true?
If you look at the factory wiring diagram, this coupler is listed as “Heated Grip”… There are other couplers under there that may not be able to handle draw from heated grips, so choose wisely and always have a Factory manual on-hand…
Thanks for watching and commenting!! 👍
@@ShawnSmoak I went on a couple hour ride a few days ago through very cold weather. Started out with the heated grips on the number 2 setting. Had to lower it to 1. They worked like a charm. Thank you.
Still loving that colour dude 👍🏻
Great Video Shawn.. thanks for the time and effort. May i ask what you used to stand your bike up during this process.Cant see any stand ?
A standard motorcycle scissor jack from K&L Supply. I’ve seen them on Amazon in the past...
Thanks Bruce!
Hi my dads asking me to help him install the Harley heated grips for his 2020 RGS. Is it much different on them to this model? His new bars arrive tomorrow so we are gonna start stripping it all back. The dealer told us we need to buy an additional wiring kit to install them so we got that too. Hopefully hear back from you soon :)
what is the part number on the grips
Hello Shawn, I'm curious about the 17 SGS and more specifically, tire/wheel size "upgraded" I spec'ed out my vision of my street glide with a 19" front/18" back wheel package I built on-line at Harley/Davidson. I looks perfect for my idea of the perfect Harley, yet my question is do I automatically get the proper upsized tires when I upgrade the wheels? Thanks for the info and great website!
+E. Simons - If the bike comes to the dealership as you customized it online, I'd say yes, for sure it would. However, if the dealer does the mods once the bike arrives, you'd need to speak with the dealer to see if they'll exchange the OEM tires for the ones required for the custom wheels. I know the wheels will not come with tires if ordered separately...
Thank you very much!
Just makes me glad I bought a Road King🤣
I might be driving around with a single right heated grip if all else fails
awesome Video, look like you dont need the additional Acc harness that harley says you need?
Shawn. Just a thought. With everything you know now. Is it possible to get to the back of the handlebar (opening) without removing the ignition and switch cover?
Ahhh, heated grips. The single most appreciated upgrade on my bike. So much so that xxxdeadhead wouldn't let me talk about it anymore in Yellowstone B-)
+Arizona RE - Lol... Those would have been nice that one night..! My hands were so freak'n cold!
Thanks you sir!
Got my heated grips installed but there's no power to the connector on the bike side, how does that get enabled?
Headed to the dealership this morning, could you supply me with a part number? I’ve got a 2017 Street glide special and would love this Thanks!
I have a 2019 Tri Glide. is this bike pre wired to install Harley headed grips shown in this video.
Great info Shawn, thank you .
I have a 2017 Road Glide Ultra (I live down here in Aberdeen) I'm hoping the same wiring is inside my fairing.
Good video lots of info. whats the part number for the grips?
Is the daymaker headlamp mountedd to the faring or the fork?
Nice!
Nice work thanks for sharing. 👍🏻
Ok this might be a stupid question so sorry but do the grips run heated all the time, or is there a on and off switch to them? Because Im in Cali and it gets really warm out here really often.
Can you tell me where the fuse is for the heated grips. I have a 2017 Road Glide Ultra and my Harley heated grips are not working. Thank you for an excellent video!
Kit Bawden were you ever able to find this fuse I’m also looking
H Shawn Smoak. I did new 14" KST Apes and took the key lock off with the forks straight with no problem. I think I did a boo boo when checking brake line clearance I heard a click when I went to the left and ended up locking the forks. I looked down the hole and saw a pin out of alignment. I was able to put the ignition key lock back on and everything worked OK until I went to lock my forks it would not lock..Any suggestions?
Shawn, does this apply to Road King as well? I've heard that the RK does not have the same plug and play wires/connectors in the headlight nacelle
merci de partager le video.
Hi Shawn..do you know if road glide is pre wired behind faring too...thanks
I’ve heard they are, but haven’t verified this myself. I can’t imagine Harley doing it for the SG and not for the RG as well...
Thanks for watching!
Thanks you ..great video's
Great video. Nice pants, I have the same one.
Good job...
Do you have to do all that if you have heated grips already and just want to change the grips to new heated ones? 14 ultra cvo
Unfortunately, the heating elements are built into the grips, so yes you do... It’s way easier than it looks!
Thanks Gregg!!
Uh….i didn’t see that you pit in the right side grip cable trough the handlebar? I dont get it…
Next the heated seat install
Do you have a video on installing the hidden ant?
