    My heated grips weren't working. I'm glad you mentioned how the plug may come undone. I checked and, sure enough, it was just the plug! I plugged it back in and they work again!

    Best heated grips I’ve ever used is the Oxford Heated grips. Mine have 4settings. I have had them on all my bikes. Cruisers, sport bikes and Adventure touring bikes. I have ridden over 400,000km with these Oxford Heated grips and never had a problem.
    A buddy of mine had those HD heated grips on his 2016 SGS and they also broke and he had to buy another set. I find from watching him buy products for his Harley that almost all Harley products are inferior to the aftermarket scene.
    Keep up the great videos

    I have had issues more with the heat working than I have with the grip body. Mine was on a 2016 CVO Touring factory grip. It was on the left side. The dealership said it was from water getting in between the grip and housing causing corrosion. If you look at the obvious, how the grip sits when the bike is parked, usually the handlebars are turned to maximum left. That sets the left grip up to receive any rain water or wash water. When I looked at the cost to replace and install, I decided it was cheaper to ride during warmer weather.

    My 2014 Ultra Limited came with the rubber heated grips and the rubber started separating. To solve I ended up removing the rubber from the heated sleeve by very carefully cutting it off. I got a nice leather scrap from a local leather store and cut it to the right size. Used some strips of 3M mounting tape and stitched the seam. It was tedious but looks pretty good and heat works well. The diameter of the grips is a little smaller, closer to non-heated rubber grips so good if you have smaller hands. I don’t have small hands but it’s still pretty comfortable.

    My '17 Ultra Limited came with the basic heated grips. In 2018, my kids got me an upgraded heated grip set for Father's Day, and yes, I had them installed at the dealership. I agree, they are a blessing on those cold mornings as I use my bike for commuting. The one thing I've noticed is the power control on the left side isn't as positive as the original, but it works OK. Thanks for publishing these install videos for the DIY folks out there that don't want to pay the install tax. Now..... heated seat????

    I had my right heated grip migrate away from the housing, just like you did. I was, however, able to fix my grip. I removed it and took it to the bench. I connected a DC power supply and ran about 2 amps at 6 Volts DC through the grip all the while having a blocking clamp pressing the grip ends back together. After about 5 minutes, the glue melted and I was able to tighten the blocking clamp until the grip slid back into itself and now it looks seated and normal again.

    I ride an 09 streetglide in Canada and heated grips are required. Went through 3 sets in 2 years. The last set I checked all the obvious stuff no luck. Gave up. Couple years go by and driving along turned on the switch and they worked. Been fine for about 5 yrs now. I stuffed a couple foam ear plugs in the end to stop that plug from coming out. And you are right you need to keep your Willy pointing the right way at all times.

I have a 2016 FLHXS Street Glide Special with 49,000 miles and my grips are just about 4 years old since I installed them when I purchased the bike brand new. I guess I will be purchasing a new set like you and just replacing the right side. I also tried squeezing it back down with a clamp and steady pressure. No good.

    In case of exernally wireing: How do you use any kind of externally wired heated grip for giving throttle if the wires are running on the outside of the bar? Even if it goes with small customization inside the switch housing and small change on the locking plastic part of the grip, doesn't the wire interfere rotational motion? I get the left side, but because the other one rotates it's much more important! Please tell!

    I have exact same grips and exact same issue for over a yr. been on bike 3-4 years. I learned if i crank heat up and get them hot, I can slowly rotate “Willie” into position and push it back on closing that gap. I finally took time to heat grip up and slide it NOT completely off but just far enough for wires to remain plugged in. I then used a gel superglue on the large gap (abt 1inch showing at this stage). I then slowly slid grip back on and into position. Been 3 months and thousands of miles and hasn’t moved yet.

    I just installed heated grips on my 19 RGS and it was one of the easiest thing I have ever done. With the new kits you don’t have to go all the way to the battery to plug into power and ground. Behind the speedo/tach cluster there is a power plug and a ground plug specifically for heated grips that you plug the left side grip into. The right side grip goes on the same as all the previous versions.

    • @jimrobinson703
      @jimrobinson703 4 года назад

      I installed the Kahuna heated grips. The design of the grip runs the wire through the bar so you have to thread the wire manually out the hole in the middle of the bar but it’s really not that hard. My bars were not on the bike at the time and I found that if you removed the switch housing wiring from the bar and ran the heater grip wiring first, the switch housing wiring would feed easier (also removing the little plug on the end). My bars were Harley’s Chizeled Lo’s.

    • @RyanUrlacher
      @RyanUrlacher  4 года назад +1

      It actually depends Jim on which model Harley. It's not all the same. Yes on the RGS you go up front for power. On many other models, you go back and elsewhere. That's why I emphasize in the video to get the right kit. They tie into power in different locations. We show it all in our videos.

    Love your videos Ryan, keep up the good work! I'm gonna have to disagree with you on something - my experience is Harley parts are leaps and bounds better than aftermarket pieces. They always fit perfectly and the quality is flawless 100% of the time. Perhaps I've been purchasing the wrong aftermarket brands?

    • @RyanUrlacher
      @RyanUrlacher  4 года назад +1

      Yeah, I think you purchased the wrong aftermarket products because that’s all we use and I have had great luck. I’d also say that Harley parts clearly aren’t flawless 100% of the time as in the case of these heated grips that fell apart. Thx for joining in the conversation. And remember all Harley clothing and parts for the most part are not made by Harley but by other companies and then just branded with their logo and marked up with the Harley tax. You can often find the same exact parts with the original logo and not a Harley logo.

    Yesterday I just had my right side grip (HD Contoured Chrome and Rubber Heated Hand Grips
    (Part Number 56100257) just start to separate like yours. I am trying to determine if my 2015 Street Glide Special is still safe to ride with my right grip in this condition. And figure out if I just need to replace the right grip like you demonstrated or if I should replace both of them? Am I running the risk of the left grip coming apart as well hence the question to replace both? And if I replace both, if I am not mistaken I cannot use the existing wiring of my current heated grips because it is attached to the left grip and not stand alone.... I have watched the preview of the full replacement install video and would tackle it if I need to do a full replacement since HD is giving me a rough quote of approx. $600 - 800 to do this install at their shop. Yikes!!

I was not pleased to hear that my brand new bike costing $$$$$$$$$$ would be at the dealership for almost 3 weeks. I took it back and after 2 1/2 weeks I was called saying that it was fixed. I picked it up and I need to flip a coin every time I want to use the heated grips because it’s a 50/50 chance that they won’t work. Heated grips are nice when they work. I will buy aftermarket when they finally fail. I retired from a car dealership with 34 years in the service department. If you treat your customer that way you won’t have any. And to this day I’ve never been back.

    Ryan, If the plug on the right grip comes unplugged from the lack of the high speed electrical tape, will that cause me to lose heat in both grips or just the right side? Mine haven't worked in a few years but i never knew there was a plug inside there... I don't know how I missed your other heated grip video...
    Thanks for the video, brother!

    I wonder if you didn't put that grip in a press and slowly press it if it would slowly slide on. Might be air pressure that is keeping it from being hammered down. It kills me to spend money on something that I already have.

    Which is better? Heated grips, heated gloves, or both?

    • @RyanUrlacher
      @RyanUrlacher  3 года назад

      I prefer heated grips Thick heated gloves would override the heat from the grips coming through your gloves. If you have tall bars that are not protected by the fairing then heated gloves are better, because you have no wind protection for you hands.

    Sure you can buy one side.....ask your Parts Manager to go to H-Dnet and break up the kit.....it'll save you a lot of your hard earned $.....you can even find the part numbers in your instructions or on H-D.com-more info-instructions......
    Btw, they are not universal 2000 up, they differ between models, electrical system and throttle systems! Also you need different extentions/connections for different models.....

    Exact same happened to mine a few weeks ago. They are 8 months old, and HD will warranty them. It’s a major disappointment. A bit of google searching shows that this has been a problem for years. Mine slid almost all the way off before I noticed. Major safety issue. There should be a class action lawsuit.

    I have been snowmobiling on and off most of my life and I have never had heated clothes or grips. I ride in the winter and I used to ride every day in the winter. I had an old 82 Honda Shadow beater that I would ride every day rain or shine and I really didn't care if I tore it up but it was an impossible thing tear up. My point is: I learned how to dress for snowmobiling and that knowledge transferred over to riding my motorcycle in the winter months. The only thing I do for old man winter is that I have these snowmobile gauntlet / sleeves that I tie onto the handlebars and then I tape them up with duct tape on the end so no wind can get in them and I just put my regular leather gloved hand inside of them and operate the handlebar controls from memory. They are fleece lined and they keep the wind off the tips of my fingers. Heated grips will keep your palms warm but do NOTHING for your finger tips. So then therefore don't waste your money on heated grips. As for the dressing, I wear long johns under my jeans and that's good till about 25 degrees. Long john tops and bottoms with a long sleeve shirt and a sweater and my leather jacket on top. The only thing I add colder than 25 and it's good till 5 below are my Leather over pants. I don't do chaps cause I'm not a cowboy and I'm not in the village people. That's how I do it and it works. That old honda I sold to a Harley Tech who chopped it and is still riding it around the Streets of Hartford CT / East Hartford.

      Thanks Paul for weighing in. Not completely true. Heated grips will keep your hands and finger tips warm when wrapped around & behind the fairing protected from the wind. I ride in below freezing temps often. Heated grips on combination with a heated seat is even better. The heat gets into your blood stream and warms your core. Very effective. I also run a heated vest liner when really cold out. All these things allow you to keep riding in all conditions and are very nice when riding on long cross-country trips. Ride safe.

      I use heated gear as well. But, the heated grips are good if you get caught after sundown and it gets cold real quick. I've never had to take mine past "2". "3" tends to scorch my hands. Even with winter gloves.
