    For a long time I was a Seiko Fan Boy and my collection at one point consisted mainly of Seiko Fives, SKXs and the like but a few years back Seiko shut the door on its regular clientele...forcing us to look elsewhere for fun on a budget.
    And that is what Seiko used to be, a kind of watch supermarket where you could go in and buy a budget watch or you could come out with a Grand Seiko.
    Now the ground floor is empty ...and nothing but faded memories tumbleweeds remain.
    Here I discuss my thoughts on Seiko, a brand I used to have a lot of respect for...

    I agreed 100%. The value for me isn't there anymore. They still have misaligned chapter rings, bezels, stamped clasps, hardlex. Their aggressive push upmarket has finally pushed me away.

      In fairness there are still a few models worth looking at: Presage line, Alpinist, Arnie - just reissued, Flightmaster (although it has recently been discontinued). That said I have 3 Seiko's in my collection but I'm not looking at any of their dive watches ... Better value and specs with the same look elsewhere from Islander to AliExpress.

    20 years ago Seiko were the main stay in my collection. Today, I own 1GS. That's my own personal choice. What I have noticed however, is that when I, or anyone else talks about Seiko QC issues & rapidly increasing prices, many Seiko owners can sometimes get unnecessarily offended & often abusive.

      Hi Steve and welcome to my world. People often get very defensive about things they love but it's just Human nature. I got that way when all watch reviewers pitted the SKX against the Citizen NY0040 and the SKX always one because it was iconic and it was a Seiko. I owned both and it really pissed me off because the Promaster is by far the better watch but I still loved the SKX013 I used to own ;)

    Spot on mate. Seiko used to mean quality & value for money but not anymore.
    The seiko enthusiasts refuse to see the lack of quality (particularly movement regulation, crystal and bracelets) for the insane prices and are just constantly bleating on about Heritage and history which actually means very little.
    The quality and specs available even on AliExpress absolutely smokes anything seiko has to offer.
    Even those brands using seiko movements regulate and finish them to a far higher standard than seiko.
    Plus they include sapphire crystals and way better bracelets. Even pagani would hang their heads in shame if they included the bracelets seiko use.

    You nailed it. pay over $400 for a Seiko and get misaligned bezel, QC issues, hardlex crystal, and an unregulated movement. I’d rather get an AliEx watch with higher specs, sapphire, better QC, and in some cases a regulated movement, all for half the price or less. I stopped buying Seiko’s a couple years ago and I’m done with them. Great to see your kitty is healthy!

      @@johnswatchjoint Orient Kamasu has evolved and provide their unique design, look but at great value for an established watch brand.
      Citizen also provide great value for money with their specifications, unique look and heritage in real world usage for their professional line.

    Spot on. While I do have a few on my wish list for a bit more so far waiting for sales I always find something $50 or less (sapphire, 316L, Seiko movement) I also want so until those run out I will stay in the very cheap end. In particular the Pagani models where they do just the logo and the design is not really one emphasizing lume, like a dress or maybe GADA type watch, represent great value on sale IMHO. The Berny titanium models on sale also seem like great value compared to anything at more than 3 times the price from Seiko.

    Hi John. I love Seiko but I'm not willing to pay the asking price in Europe. I buy all my Seikos in Japan. Only JDM models, only used for half or a third of the retail price. This is what allows me to still love this brand. Micro-brands also interest me. I'm looking for original models on your channel that are good value for money, a little less tribute watches. Glad to see this pretty girl in great health. 👍

    Totally correct. I fell in love with mechanical watches and accessibly priced, well-built accessible sports watches through the Seiko world and the markets of the Gulf. Everything gets more expensive over time, but they've seriously lost their way and the whole value and character proposition has been lost. Over-priced, under-spec'd lost the value. And yes I love the Landshark also!

  • @bagpiper
    @bagpiper 2 месяца назад +2

    Very accurate analysis. In a nutshell, Seiko has tried to reposition themselves as an upscale brand price-wise without a corresponding increase in value. There are still some values to be had - occasionally - but not often. I, too, find fewer Seikos coming into my watch boxes. More Orient, Citizen, and Ali Express brands are taking that role.

    My thoughts exactly. First time I saw a €50 Pagani Design with a decent bracelet and sapphire crystal Seiko was dead in the water for me. The idea that I'd have to pay at least €600 for Seiko letting me enjoy those 'luxuries' seems ridiculous to me. It's just not worth the money they are asking for their watches. And it sure seems the majority of watch enthusiasts are thinking the same. The route they've taken can't be doing their business any good.

    Hi John, my only new Seiko is a JDM SBTM. Loved the design, has 100m w.r., saphire with super clear coating, solid bracelet and endlinks, perpetual calendar and radio controlled. It syncs. every night and is a true grab and go. I did have to pay v.a.t.and small duties, but as an exception I was ok with it. That's wild that people are emailing to complain about the lack of Seiko and unsubscribing, it's a crazy world mate ... I still like some of the new Seikos, and the finishing on my SPB381 has elevated it to my favourite Seiko, with a decent discount it's a good offer but the RRP is extremely optimistic and that's not helping them. Seeing as good discounts are quite easy to get through most Seiko ADs they even seem to know themselves the prices are quite inflated...

    I understand totally John. I am a Seiko fan myself, have a few oldies, also got a gift of a newer Seiko 5 "dive style" blue SRPD51K which I do like and a Seiko Alpinist pre Prospex era. I had a new orange dial Seiko GMT which I didn't keep, as my brother wanted it, and I didn't mind giving it to him for his birthday ! However I have no inclination to buy another one. I'm keeping an eye out for a Cadisen equivalent. They have the orange dial Seiko look alike in the standard watch, but I'm hoping they make a GMT. Why?, well it will probably have 200m water resistance and a screw down crown, it will definitely have sapphire, not hardlex, will have the same movement, and will be considerably less than half the price of the Seiko. There is already a Steeldive version but Cadisen have better dials and I'm sure they'll make an equivalent GMT soon enough. So, I don't mind not seeing any Seiko watches John !

    Totally agree with you, have sold all my Seikos, left one Orient Kamasu which when bought on sale is still good. If the value is not there anymore, I'd rather go Swiss - Longines, Oris, Rolex, etc. where the value is in their more "luxurious" name, not in the build or function.
    However, thanks a lot to Seiko and Citizen for allowing some excellent movements (which they spent a lot of money in R & D) to be sold to other watchmakers, like those in AE. Seiko and Citizen are not worried about these watchmakers, they do still have a very respectable name.

    John - very much agree here. They are no longer the value proposition that they once were and their pricing today is too high for the specs and quality. But there is still value to be found with vintage Seikos - I picked up a QT from 1973 for £100 - 50 years old in great condition and keeping time within around 15 seconds per year. Not a biggie for me but rather than featuring new Seikos why not cover some of your favourite old Seikos? Though on a cautionary note there … the value has vanished from many of those too e.g. SKX and SARB. V best

    Seiko was THE gateway watch for a lot of people, and they've become branded to the company. Unfortunately when buyers are ready to step up they're now left with little to look forward to. On top of that they're asked to pay more for the same entry level spec. I've seen this too many tijes in other fields, a company focused so hard trading on their past glory they miss the rest ofcthe market upping the game aroung them. At this point I'd take a San Martin or Baltany over a seiko any day of the week, and if Miyota and Ronda continue to improve their movements we could see a lot of Chinese brands dropping their dependency on Seiko innards.

    Seiko--doubled prices in less than ten years. Meanwhile, the Yen has lost 60% of its value against the US Dollar. That means when Seiko converts dollars into yen at the end of each fiscal year, their earnings have exploded. I would also add in that labor costs in Japan have been stagnant for some 20-plus years. In short: Seiko pricing is taking the piss. Finally: I recently saw Casio is selling the same g-shock I bought from 12 years ago, for exactly the same price. You want a Japanese icon without the Seiko snobbery? Casio g-shock is it.

    They've definitely lost their 'value for money' and you've hit the nail on the head, it's opened the door for Ali express. But seen as 90% of those watches are powered by seiko movements, it won't have hurt the bottom line, why make problematic watches when you can churn out movement's. I love seikos, great dials but why no sapphire. Still love seiko though, last one I got was the SRPK17 55th anniversary, and to me good value as it's a stand alone case design. Couldn't agree more. I'd humour them for their price-rises, if their non-JDM QC had improved. But it hasn't. The number of apologists for shoddy build quality on YT is astounding. I wonder if Seiko hate their international buyers somehow. Certainly give that impression. Luckily, eBay is my friend and some gems from the 70s, 80s and 90s can be found for a pittance. Only choice now the Singapore greys-market sellers have given up. Plus China of course, for now, although for how much longer they'll remain the value proposition is anyone's guess.

Not saying seikos don’t last. Just saying it seems that seiko has turned into Rolex in terms of brand vs a watch that stays on Your wrist 24/7. People watching youtube vids everyday seem to think you must own 31 watches and wear them once a day instead of the real intention of a good watch. And that is only having one watch and wearing it 24-7. Citizen is hugely underrated as a brand and it Shouldn’t be. But John, lad. There's the one elephant in the room that you're failing to address. Indicated water resistance. If a Seiko watch indicates 200m, then it has been tested at that depth. An AliExpress watch that indicates 200m is what? Just some printing on a dial? You always say "claimed water resistance". When I wear a Seiko in the water I'm confident. When I wear an AliExpress watch in the water can I be anything more than hopeful?

    • @johnswatchjoint
      @johnswatchjoint  2 месяца назад +1

      Now now. We aren't taking about that here. We are talking price and value for money. I paddle board when I get the chance and have worn Addiesdive , San Martin and especially Seestern watches in the water for hours. I have every confidence in them. I am talking about the Seiko 5 line, a lot of which as you know only had 30m of water resistance for the most part. I am generalising here but the only brands I would not take in the water are Tandorio and Pagani Design. I say claimed water resistance as that is what it is. I cannot say 200m water resistance because I have no way to quantify that...but I know for the things most of us do do like pool diving or snorkelling or paddle boarding these watches are excellent
