- Scene from the 1989 sci-fi horror movie The Fly 2, which is the sequel to the classic 1986 film The Fly. In the scene, Martin Brundle (Eric Stoltz) and Beth Logan (Daphne Zuniga) visits Stathis Borans (John Getz) now a reclusive bitter drunk. Martin confronts Stathis about what happened on the night Seth Brundle died and about a cure Brundle worked on. Stathis tells Martin and Beth that Seth attempted to cure him by using the Telepods to fuse himself and Veronica Quaife together in one body and that it failed and Veronica killed him by shooting him in the head with a shotgun. Stathis then tells Martin that there is a cure and that the Telepods holds the answers and believes Martin knows the solution to his situation and tells Martin use it to cure himself. Martin rejects this and Stathis tells Martin and Beth to leave and to take his jeep.

Not just a good horror flick, which really is a rare thing, but a solid good movie and possibly the best one of the horror genre ever made. Your generic expectation that some character should get killed by the movie villain because that character is an a-hole. The Fly tells the story of a good guy turning into a monster which is an everlasting story concept, so having an aspect in the movie being the opposite makes sense.

He was definitely the reluctant hero in this. To be honest I wouldn't want reminders of what transpired before, but I think he still loves Ronnie enough (even though she passed away) to help her son.
The man may be cantankerous, but from what I saw after he told the truth... He is a merciful man. He does have compassion, but hides it behind his anger.
He was an arsehole, but he had standards.
Stathis was a jerk. But he shown his true colors at the end going to help Veronica. He lost his love and two of his limbs to the fly. Veronica dies in childbirth. The whole series is tragic.
The first movie has been largely seen, since its release, as a doomed love story with gore and fiction added for good measure…
I was shocked Veronica died. They should have let her live. She was a strong character in the first movie.
The least he could do is show compassion for her son despite who his Father was like Snape did for Harry
First movie was a masterpiece but this was an enjoyable sequel as well.
Honestly, his acting in this scene was almost too good for the movie.
Stathis is such a shell of who he was. Kind of sad.

John Getz was gold in his cameo! 2 smalls things he did that showed his compassion. #1 knowing Martin”s Age, meaning that’s how long he’s been mourning Veronica’s Death, and him finding out Martin was at his door. Had him somewhat curious to see how the offspring was doing. #2 offering his car to Martin, and Beth was small sample size that he still cares about his Ex enough to help her Child!
And he suggested the cure too
Exactly - you can tell also that he truly loved Veronica, in spite of their breakup and her choosing to love another man and then later, he was shattered and deeply heartbroken by her death. In the opening part of the film and later in a brief scene, you can see him begging Bartok to help Veronica terminate the non-human mutant inside of her which was slowly killing her and eventually as Stathis warned and feared, it did kill her. You also get the feeling that Bartok paid him off to not talk about Veronica's death, so that's another reason why he became a reclusive broken alcoholic. Yet, even in his broken state, he still helped the human son of the woman he remained in love with, even though he hated Seth and what the mutant Brundlefly did to Ronnie.

He saw a glimmer of Veronica in Beth's love for Martin. In a strange way, the cure would have given him closure knowing that he would no longer be haunted by "the fly".

3:52 The fact that Martin knows the sacrifice he would have to make in order to regain his humanity, shows how his humanity is still intact at this point. By the time his father got to this conclusion, Seth had lost his moral center and rationality. That also might be the reason why Stathis decided to help him by offering them both his Jeep. Well, that, and also he's the last remaining part of Veronica still alive.

True, but there's a big difference between Seth and Martin. Seth was mutated at the genetic level as much as the fly that was fused with him. Seth's human side became aware of the Insects mentality instincts that basically corrupted his mentality, on the other hand Martin was born as a mutant, his fly side is what he is, there is no mentality that takes him away from what he was, because it is what he is.
Martin is born as a half fly half human, so only his body morphs, the moment he changes, his natural instincts and understanding of his body makes him act. That is the sole reason he can tell the difference between people and even a dog and at the end he can gesture to Beth to activate the Telepods, because his mind is still him, Martin. Seth's mutation affected his mind, because of the mind of the Fly that was fused with him was also alive within and each was melding, conjoining into two personalities with one body that had both genes.
Think of it as Milk or Chocolate, each is their own, but then when you mix them in a cup, which one is dominant? the Milk or the Chocolate? Now Martin is like a Milk Chocolate bar, born of both, unable to be really separated unless with technology.

Stathis was an arrogant jerk who was jealous of Seth and Ronnie. But he did care for Ronnie. However, didn't just go to save Ronnie, he went to Seth's lab with the intention of killing Seth. In a way, Seth taking away Stathis's hand and foot is considered self-defence as Stathis was about to shoot him with the shotgun. Yes, he's bitter that Seth "stole his girl" and "caused her death". No, he's just a sad recluse who does nothing but drink. Sad indeed.
@Daniel Williamson yep pretty spot on. Not sure why the sequel got so much hate. I think it did great in the fact that unlike completely losing your humanity like Seth did, it was great turnaround to see the monster regain their humanity

Eric Stoltz was actually cast to play Marty McFly in Back To The Future.
I heard about that. He was fired and replaced by Michael J. Fox. Funny enough, Daphne Zuniga guest starred in a episode of Family Ties as Michael J. Fox's girlfriend.
It all worked out in the end since Fox was the original choice for Marty but was unavailable because of his popular sitcom Family Ties, so they went with Stoltz.
Stathis Borans had become a reclusive drunk as a result of Veronica's death during childbirth, and the loss of his left hand and right foot.

If The Fly was done today, I don't know who would have suited the role of Stathis. He has to be older, arrogant, very vile, jealous and deep inside caring.

I wish this scene had ended with Stathis telling Martin "...you have your mother's eyes." Not a joke, or some parody of when Alan!Snape said the same thing to Harry. I genuinely think it'd have been nice, given Stathis was the only character from the Fly I to appear (as Veronica had been recast).
Unlikely Stathis would had said that to Martin. He became a bitter man when Ronnie died.
It's true Stathis was in love with Ronnie, but that kid has three parents not just two. He said "striking family resemblance" and that says it all.

I think that cronenberg wanted to show the human condition as it is (it also happens in eastern promises), both seth and stathis had emotional fragility that together with that of veronica ended in disaster, stathis was very jealous of the superior height and intelligence of seth, couldn´t reason with both and everything went to hell, the end of the first movie :(

As great as the practical creature effects are in this sequel I like the brundlefly monster more than martinfly because the brundlefly looked more grotesque and looked more insect like!

@@emodante1084 That was what Chris Walas was going for. As he saw the first movie as a Love Tragedy/Horror movie he intended the sequel to be more of a monster movie. MartinFly mutation was more natural then Seth's, for he was fused together with the Fly DNA, his body was literally rotting and falling apart, as his human DNA was slowly being overwritten by the Fly, thus making him a grotesque creature.
His mother dna decreased the fly mutation some by passing on healthy human DNA that is the reason he is not exactly like his father.

@@danielwilliamson6180 Well the film originally intended to have Veronica live and give birth to twins then having been the one to help Bartok fix the telepods, but when that plot was scrapped Geena Davis declined the role having respect for the her character was upset that Veronica would'nt have a character arc.

I feel a Bit sorry for Stathis but at the same time, I hate him. As he seems to sorta have hatred for Martin jus cause he is Seth Brundle's Child. That's jus cruel. Stathis also hated Seth. He couldn't accept the fact that himself and Ronnie weren't together anymore and that Ronnie was with another man. That's why he accused Seth of stealing her from him and for causing her death. Yes, he did Ronnie pregnant with Martin, but Ronnie died from cardiac arrest and most likely birth complications. Stathis was cruel to Martin simply cos he's the son of the man who stole Ronnie from him, got her pregnant, caused her death and took his hand and foot from him. It's Martin's fault he is what he is. He's been lied to and held prisoner in a corporate facility and they wanted to exploit him so Bartok could rule the world and discover the secret of creating more mutants like him. Martin's insect side drove him to furious anger and seek violent vengeance upon Bartok and his employees. Seth Brundle was a lonely man who was trying to create something he believed who would change the world and revolutionize travel. It was a senseless terrible accident when he got fused with the fly and his human and insect sides were in conflict and it was consuming him. Stathis was armed with a loaded shotgun and Seth was defending himself. At least, Stathis did the right thing and gave Martin and Beth his car. Still, not fair for him to say that Seth stole Ronnie. He and Ronnie weren't together and had broken up when Ronnie met Seth.
