How should Christians respond when people accuse them of being homophobic?

- When Christians speak against homosexuality, they may be accused of "hate speech." From Ligonier’s 2015 National Conference, R.C. Sproul and Russell Moore explain that disapproving of homosexual behavior does not make one homophobic.

The thing is is that people think that Homosexuals choose this life. No. I know for a fact that you can’t change it. I do not understand the unfairness of how the fact that I feel a certain way is a sin. If i could be straight I would, but I can’t. I am okay with me I love myself and Jesus.
You are totally right when you say you can't change those feelings. That is who you are. R C Sproul was not saying that those attractions and feelings are a sin! Not at all! A Christian who says that isn't thinking straight at all. Jesus loves you for sure. When you feel hurt by God or abandoned, just as him "what", not "why". Ask Him what He wants you to do with those feelings and He will provide you with an answer. Jesus loves you, He loves me and I know that. “Hate the sin, not the sinner” is a terrible mindset when it comes to homosexuality, in short, being homosexual is apart of who you are so by hating ‘the sin’ you really are saying to despise someone’s identity. @@lanadoesathing we can not tolerate intolerance. If we do so, tolerance as we know it will disappear. People have no right or excuse to hate people because of their sexuality. Refusing to make a cake for a gay couple because they’re gay is just the same as refusing to make a cake for a black couple because they’re black. It’s discrimination.
If the refusal is because the person is gay, yes thats discrimination but if i own the business I will no make the cake, why? Because its for a gay marriage, not because the people but the type of union that is going to be celebrated, if i don’t do so then I would be a hypocrite, because im supporting something that I know is not correct according to the teaching and the faith that I have grown with, if im still called homophobic or discriminatory thats on the person but I did morally everything right according to what I believe, if we don’t agree thats fine, as a Christian or simply as a regular person I wont get mad, I know people that don’t agree with what I might believe and im fine, will I get mad? Who said we have or that we agree with everything that somebody else says, I mean who in their rational mind thinks that it is that way, that would be so BORING, can you imagine if all 7 plus billion people in the world think the exact same way, how we would be?
Armand Simmons Thanks for your reply. If you own the business, then yes, you have the right to refuse business to people. But in my opinion, refusing to bake a cake for someone because of something that is innately who they are is discrimination and wrong. Someone who refuses to bake a cake for a gay wedding should not be at all surprised when they lose business and get backlash. I used to be a Christian, so I know what the Bible says. If the goal of Christianity is to spread love and tell people about the freedom of a relationship with Christ, but a Christian refuses to bake a cake for a gay couple, how is that portraying love? I am well aware of the concept of “tough love,” but that will not go anywhere if you’re trying to show people that you love them. Additionally, if you are a Christian, it is not your place to judge people outside of the church for what they do. The Bible calls Christians to judge and evaluate other Christians’ actions, not unbelievers. Unbelievers do not believe as you do, so why should you tell them what to do with their lives? If a Christian refuses to bake a cake for a gay wedding, how does this at all help the situation? Christians should want to spread love and peace. This act of discrimination will not spread love. It will just make gay people and people who don’t believe in God resentful at these Christians. People can call it whatever they want, but refusing to serve a gays couple is homophobia, not just a differing of opinions. I agree that if everybody had the same opinions the world would be very dull! But on the topic of refusing to gay people, or anyone on that matter, I believe this differs from a standard opinion. No one believes that racism is an opinion. It is wrong and no one will disagree. Once someone’s beliefs start to discriminate, I believe this is where one can draw the line on an opinion and just call it discrimination. I hope I don’t sound rude, and I would love to have a conversation with you. These are just my opinions.
Kipekee Reddington Hi, ex-Christian here. Thank you for your response. I disagree; I know exactly why that man refused to make the cake. It’s the “hate the sin, love the sinner” mentality. I still believe this to be discrimination, even if it goes against his beliefs. He’s refusing to serve these people for who they are. I know you would disagree that being gay is innately who you are, but I believe it is. I have a friend who is gay and also a Christian. She tried for years to deny these feelings and to be a better Christian, but she couldn’t. It made her very depressed and suicidal. She finally accepts herself and still loves God, so saying that God only accepts the straight cis people doesn’t align with many stories. I know what the Bible says, I know what’s taught. I used to be a Christian. I tried to reconcile these Bible passages with what I knew to be true in my heart. Every single time I tried to abide by what the Bible said and believe that homosexuality was a sin (as well as following many other things in the Bible)I felt disgusting. I couldn’t live with myself and I constantly felt guilty and depressed, and my mental health dramatically deteriorated. So please, do not tell me that only Christ shines the light on truth. Don’t tell me I didn’t try hard enough, I didn’t search for God hard enough. I did. I tried very hard and I found no life. I do not believe as you do. I’d love to have a conversation with you, and I hope I didn’t sound rude. I hope you have a good day.
@@emmastucker7796 Emma, if you know why the man refused to make the cake, what is there to discuss? You already know the answer. Going through the comments i notice one thing. Its all about feelings, how ''I'' feel about something not what God says about it. To be a Christian means to serve God and not yourself, it means to believe and trust in His word and live according to what it says. It means to deny yourself, take up the cross and follow Him(Mark 8:34-38). Some Christians do not want to deny themselves, they want to please themselves and also please God at the same time. Hence you hear phrases like i am a "gay Christian" when the bible is very clear that homosexuality is a sin(1 Corinthians 6:9-10; 1 Timothy 1:10,Romans 1:26-27). Now as Christians we are not called to hate people who engage in such sin or sinful lifestyles in general but that also does not mean we should approve it or deem it right when asked about it. Christians should make decisions or make righteous judgments based on the word of God and not their personal opinion or feelings.

Perhaps a better title for this video would be 'How Christians should NOT respond when people accuse them of being homophobic'. I say this, because the old, white, straight, ethnocentric panellists here suggest the appropriate response is to label the accuser as 'silly' and 'slanderous', to simply assume they are 'just trying to shut you down' or that Christians ought to make assumptions about their accusers' mindset by concluding their sense of identity is 'wrong'. This is not the way. This response is arrogant, infantile and disingenuous. It's exactly the reason they are labelled 'homophobic' in the first place.
Not once did any of these panellists suggest the bleeding obvious: Ask their accusers what they mean when they call them 'homophobic' and the reasons they believe that this is the case. At no point was there any suggestion that 'Christians' ought to first try to understand what the person is trying to express; nor did they call 'Christians' to participate in any form of self-reflection with regard to their attitudes, beliefs, language or behaviour. If you want people to hear you, you need to let people feel heard. You need to listen. Something these 'Christians' clearly don't have a handle on.
Here's a tip; if you want to know why a member of the LGBTIQ community believes your attitude or behaviour presents as 'homophobic', the RIGHT way to respond to them is ALWAYS to ask them why and then ACTIVELY listen to their answer, rather than just assume you know better than them the way these old scrotes did in this video. Saying "Thinking gay is wrong isn't homophobia" Is the same as someone saying "Not liking black people doesnt make me racist".Last one sounds stupid? Well they're both the same with different victims.
This is not a good analogy because the first one is thinking that a particular activity is wrong, but the second one is not liking someone because of their inherent skin color. You can still like someone while disagreeing with their lifestyle. The latter is racism, but the former is a difference in worldviews. Not everyone who speaks against homosexuality does so because they're disgusted by it; some (like myself) do so out of godly compassion for the eternal souls of those who engage in, and identify with an activity that God detests, in rebellion against His holiness. (Romans 1:18-32). We all must repent of our sins, and follow Jesus with all of our heart as our Savior from the mandatory eternal punishment that sin carries in order to receive God's mercy and grace, and escape the justice of His righteous indignation against sin. Because God is loving and compassionate He would prefer to give us mercy and eternal life in His presence, but the choice to believe and accept is ours. While many will continue to hate and slander the people of God because of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, some will repent, and thank us in eternity.

My subjective opinion is that the Bible is completely accurate, and therefore I base my opinions and arguments on it.
As for the reality of God and in particular, Jesus Christ, I’ll take them one at a time. I find it impossible to believe this universe or any universe exists without God. It’s just illogical. Aristotle figured it out thousands of years ago - the universe needs a first cause, and to go a bit beyond Aristotle, this universe requires a cause with sufficient power, sufficient wisdom, and a desire to create this universe. A fellow that meets _that_ description can be none other than Gᴏᴅ, with a big “G” and no peers.
As for Jesus Christ, the more I understand the grand narrative of the Bible the more it makes sense to me. Jesus Christ is the central figure of the narrative. He’s the star of the show. I will try to give you the big picture in a nut shell -
1) Gᴏᴅ created the Earth and heavens - seas, land, plants, heavenly bodies, sea creatures, flying creatures and all creatures of the Earth - as the stage, backdrop and props for the play. Man is the primary character/actor. Gᴏᴅ, being Gᴏᴅ, has to be the real star of the show, so He himself became a man, Jesus Christ. That is why He can say we are made in His image.
2) Gᴏᴅ is absolutely the only good thing in existence. Those things which Gᴏᴅ touches are good to the extent Gᴏᴅ touches them but fall short of goodness in so far as they are disconnected from Gᴏᴅ’s goodness. Evil is not a thing, per se, but is anything that is not fully connect to Gᴏᴅ’s goodness, in the same way darkness is not really a thing but is the absence of a thing - light. Gᴏᴅ created the first two people, Adam and Eve, perfect but He gave them the opportunity to disconnect from His goodness by disobeying His command - “Do not eat of the Tree-of-the-Knowledge-of-Good-and-Evil or you shall die.” God did not create evil but He allowed it to happen and it is an important element in the Grand Narrative. Evil (I will speak rhetorically as if “evil” were a thing and not just the absence of a thing) allows Gᴏᴅ to demonstrate (not just talk about) His loving-kindness by redeeming Man and all things touched by evil.
3) Gᴏᴅ must always, always execute perfect justice. Every sin is ultimately a sin against Gᴏᴅ and the only perfectly just penalty for sinning against the infinite Gᴏᴅ is infinite punishment. Since every man sins, we are all justly condemned to eternal punishment in Hell. None of us could completely pay for sins due to our own imperfection, so what is the solution? Gᴏᴅ Himself becomes a man (to be qualified to pay for the sins of Man) lives a perfect life here on Earth and sacrifices his life, receiving the punishment for our sins. Jesus Christ dies in our place, fulfilling the requirements of Gᴏᴅ’s perfect justice. Then, being actually Gᴏᴅ, Jesus rises from the dead, feat accomplished. Jesus (Gᴏᴅ) offers salvation to all through faith in what he accomplished on the cross, rather than salvation through our own goodness which can never be good enough. Only God Himself is good enough to redeem us from the curse we are under. No man descended from Adam could ever be good enough to redeem even just himself from his own sin. Jesus Christ is good enough to be the perfect sacrifice because 1) he is not descended from Adam and 2) Jesus is actually Gᴏᴅ - that makes Jesus good enough to satisfy Gᴏᴅ’s justice. (Yes Gᴏᴅ can be in two places at once - He is Gᴏᴅ - He’s cool like that.)
The way I see it, the plan and the narrative are too good, too extraordinary, too perfect to have come from anyone other than Gᴏᴅ Himself. God gets to be lowly and meek and humble and at the same time He gets to be the Great Hero and Savior of the universe. In my opinion, the drama is beyond anything men could have come up with on their own.
So, you see, I personally believe every word of the Bible from the first verse to the last. Naturally, I will always use the Bible as the basis for my arguments. I think my faith is based on good reasoning. (But who am I?) It is impossible for me to not believe in Gᴏᴅ and Jesus and the Bible. I cannot please Gᴏᴅ but He is pleased to show loving-kindness toward me because of His own character.
(I am loathe to say this but I think you will find that the vast majority of those calling themselves “Christians” are in fact false Christians not believing the Bible or relying on faith for their salvation but relying on their own goodness (which is false goodness) and their attempts to please Gᴏᴅ, just as your were saying. No man can please Gᴏᴅ. None. _I personally_ do not respect the “culture and beliefs” of what is referred to as “Christianity.” I believe the Bible. Men corrupt everything they touch. I trust no man, not even myself. I believe Gᴏᴅ chooses to communicate real truth to us and He does so through His Word, the Bible, and the He protects his Word from the corruption of men - otherwise we would be left with no means of discerning truth whatsoever.)
Blessings to you. I hope I have been helpful.
Seeing this entire discussion is just depressing. Does the scripture have words for those that deviate from your faith? What are its sentiments on those that practice other religions? Would you think of them to be sinners as well? Does a belief not tied to your God, one tied to self-expression, need to be hated so much so?
If you say he disapproves, wouldn't that mean you do so as well? How bad do you think it feels for anyone to "disapprove" of your existence? Your friends, your family, for them to basically shun who you are. For them to basically say "I don't think you are on the right path" for being happy.
All things being equal, based on your reasoning, if you disapprove with some of the things your children might be doing means you're hating them! "Mommy told me not to paint the neighbor's cat because is wrong so mommy must hate me" ... "It would make me so happy to paint the cat green ...".

Many businesses say “We may refuse to serve anyone.”
So why do so we have to serve LGBT?
You can refuse to serve anyone, but not discriminate in doing so.
You can’t refuse to serve someone based on discriminating against them based on sexuality or gender or race etc.

Do I believe homosexuality Is A sin according to my Christian beliefs yes I do, but I still love everybody the same, it isn’t my job to judge people, that judgement comes from god,at the end of the day we all have our own beliefs and there should be respect on both sides
Matthew Persaud we are called to live people yes and witness to them with compassion and respect but if you truly love them you’ll tell them the truth of their sin and share the gospel and how there is freedom in Christ but we aren’t to condemn people, we are to get the log out of our which is that presupposition that we are better than the person and once we get that out then we can get the speck out of their eye with love and truth
『Alice Lemonade』 I mean this with love and respect but I have seen people who were full on transgender and have been transformed by Christ and I cannot convince anyone anything it’s only by Gods grace and changing a persons heart. The problem with us is a sin problem, we think are good people and don’t need to be saved and we think everyone else is bad except for us but the Bible says all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. The reason we share the gospel is because we know it changes lives. We cannot change ourselves because we are slaves to sin. You’re not disagreeing with me, you’re disagreeing with God so you have to ask yourself. Who’s telling the truth you or God?
『Alice Lemonade』 I can see where you’re coming from but I would challenge you by asking where did you come up with that conclusion. Because the Bible explains about idolatry and how we make up gods in our own mind to fit our lives and justify our sin because of our depraved minds
God loves everybody but not everybody inherits his kingdom, i believe god is the truth, the way and the light, I would gladly spread the gospel to anybody but it’s up to that person to wanna believe it, I would never force my religion on anyone even if we have a difference of beliefs, it’s up to them to find god
@S t r a w B e r r y C l o u d s No one is being forceful here. Where did you get that even from? You can talk to someone about Jesus in a nice way but if they don't want to hear about it then we won't force them or anything. We'll just pray for them.
Not agreeing with a way a person lives doesnt mean you hate them/invalidate them.
If that was the case, then the LGBTQIA+ is doing the exact same thing to us. So neither side are any better than the other, first and foremost.
You dont have to agree with a way a person lives, i guarentee nobody 100% supports how a friend lives, its not possible. So does that mean they hate them or invalidate their lives? Nope, just difference of thought. They respect each other and live with each other. It IS possible, its just that neither side wants to have this discussion.
How about you don’t give an opinion then. Nobody cares about your god
How many laws have gay people tried to pass making being a Christian illegal? How many in the reverse?
That is literally the point of homophobia

@@buterascoffee6575 it’s irrelevant what you think homophobia means though
Homophobia is prejudice or dislike of gay people. Saying it’s wrong isn’t prejudice or disliking the person. It’s disliking their sin
I mean if you invalidate someone’s sexuality, you ARE kind of homophobic because you are basically denying them, even if you say that you don’t hate them.

God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit, three persons, one God, and Jesus Christ is the only Way, Truth, and Life. Jesus died on the cross to pay for our sins, He was burried in a tomb, rose again on the third day, (Bodily) and is seated at the right hand of God the Father, He sent His Holy Spirit, and for those that believe, repent, and trust in Jesus, will be saved.
No other way but by the precious Blood of Jesus.
Dd S my friend, the reason we believe is because of not only evidence, witch is about 6000 manucripts, hand written by men guided by the Holy Ghost, and thats just the Greek, in other languages is about 20,000 manuscripts, in Coptic, and other local languages, it is all ispired by God, not man, and they all line up, and get this, that is only the New Testiment, we treat mens writings as infalible, but we have vary few manuscripts for those, look into it yourself, the Bible proves its self, i dont have to defend it, but i do urge you to read it, to believe, repent of sin, and put your trust in Jesus, God sent His Son to die on the cross, to pay for mine, and your sins, He took the wrath of God, so that we wouldnt have to, because the wrath of Almighty God abides on sinners, it is written in Psalm 7:11
11 God judgeth the righteous, and God is angry with the wicked every day.
But if we repent, and trust in Jesus, by His Blood we will be reconciled to God, by the death of His Son, who rose from the dead and is seated at the right hand of the Father. If you really want to know, read the Bible, beginning to end, you never know how long you have, and eternity is worth knowing where you will spend it, ill pray for you also.
Hell is real, and without Jesus, that is where we would all go, because sin is falling short of the Glory of God, we broke Gods law, and we cant ern our way into Heaven, so no good things we do will be enough, but only the Blood of Jesus, and the Grace of God that is shown to you at this vary moment, my friend i hope you will deeply concider this
Dd S iv shared with you the Gospel, faith comes by hearing, and hearing the Word of God, but a lot of them were written about 50 years after Jesus rose from the dead, they were not coppies of coppies, but eye witnesses, and written in the lifetime of other eye witnesses, seek the truth in Jesus, and not in the lies of the devil, or of men, look into it yourself, im not hear to debate the Bible, because it was inspired by God, not men, if you really want to know, seek God with a humble heart, not a proud heart and mind, read it, seek the truth in Christ, for there is truth in nothing els, Jesus said i am the Way, the Truth, and the Life, no one come to the Father but by me. John 14:6
Dd S oh god you again.
Dd S I mean Ido agree with you. Didn't the Pope say that the Bible was just a load of stories to teach people to be good?
