In this talk, I will weave together my journey as an LGBTQ+ Christian pastor who began within the evangelical tradition, was forced into conversion therapy, and after that failed to ‘heal’ me, I moved to reconcile my faith and sexuality. After spending a decade studying the Bible and Christian theology, I was surprised to find that the anti-LGBTQ+ interpretations of Scripture were wholly inconsistent with a historical approach to the Bible, and discovered a long tradition of queer people within the pages of the Bible and throughout Christian history. In this talk, I will share my thoughts on why homophobic interpretations of the Bible are plainly incorrect and how LGBTQ+ people can reclaim their place as rightful members of the community of faith. Rev. Brandan Robertson is a noted author, activist, and public theologian working at the intersections of spirituality and social renewal. What I’m trying to figure out is why everybody so concerned about homosexuality, and divorce is condemned in the Bible yet it’s so prevalent today and the Church says nothing about it, and it’s actually a choice rather than homosexuality which is how a person is born. Just something to think about ig
Homosexuality is only a problem for us if it's being taught that it's acceptable within our religion. According to the Bible, we are not to judge those outside of the church, but those within the church who teach falsehoods are to be driven out and expelled. People can do what they want in their own homes, but if you enter our house, you have to follow the house rules. That is very fair. You are free to leave if you disagree with the house rules. Divorce is prevalent today but it's not the place of the church to uphold its rules amongst non-Christians. Those who believe in divorce (unless it's due to adultery) are not Christians. Jesus said "Whoever divorces his wife, except for unchastity, and marries another commits adultery.” If you disagree with Jesus, you have removed yourself from the church.
Practically all churches counsel married couples so they remain married. Try telling the truth
And yet the church has an equally high rate of divorce as the rest of the world
In the end times things shall go from worse to worse.
it's because it's a trend, if the media keeps pushing it on us then we'll keep talking about it
People fear if they dig in scriptures to get more knowledge, they may find truth that messes with their shallow thinking. Quoting one scripture not being able to research why it was written and in that time frame scares people. So sticking to that boxed in mentality will keep them from growing spiritually, religion only stunts your growth, walking in love will cause you to grow.
And this part of why as an Seventh Day Adventist I love our church.
This comment ❤️
I agree, building on this; although orthodox traditions are _great tools_, it's only when they are used as such, with present and past context and Gods greater wisdom in mind.
But neither should Christians become the other extreme, not gathering together in unity, as some have resorted to in the past; as this is stifling as well.
One can learn much in solitude, with only the holy spirit and your own contemplation's. But I've learnt that the greatest growth is from practical fellowship, and being encouraged by others love for our heavenly father.
Religion doesn't stunt your growth. Nobody is capable of out-growing Jesus. Unless you believe you're morally superior to Jesus, I don't see how you could claim that becoming like him has stunted your growth.
Amen

You don`t need to meet numerous pastors or dig archeological sites to find out what "The Bible actually teaches" Everything is written in simple words in the Scriptures: "If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination" "For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error."

One who is broken and contrite before God is a person God will not turn away but one who justifies there sin before God will suffer the penalty of all sinners without saving grace.
The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned. No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God's seed abides in him; and he cannot keep on sinning, because he has been born of God.

Um no. The Bible's laws are divided into three types: moral, ceremonial, and civil. Ceremonial laws in the Bible don't apply directly to people today because they were part of God's story with ancient Israel. The same goes with civil laws. We literally don’t live in Israel. The reason why moral laws stay the same is because Gods morality never changes. That’s why Christian’s follow moral laws which includes the ten commandments. Relationship and love is not just a feeling. You have to put in work and that includes reading the bible.

That doesn’t mean that we are allowed to continue to sin. In that case, we would no longer be clean. Our relationship never ends, and we are constantly striving for a close relationship with God.
@@CrystalAgape Love? What is love? Doesn't the Bible say that if we love Christ, we are to obey His commandments? His love for us will not prevent us from our freedom to chose Him or reject Him. He doesn't and can't save us IN our sins. He can only save us FROM our sins. And, only if we choose Him.

It's lost due to our culture being 2000 years removed from when this was written. Hence, we have no clue what this prohibition actually means. The only problem with this obfuscation is that it's ahistorical. The early church (and the Jewish tradition before it) WERE living in this cultural context, and KNEW exactly what these words meant. They condemned hs activity accordingly. Churches that do so now are not doing this due to innovation based on lack of present-day understanding but are simply following what the church/Jewish community understood from Day One.

The Bible does address lesbianism. Read Romans 1 (a chapter this presenter tellingly never mentions). I'm familiar with the Hebrew of Lev 18:22. For clarification, it does not contain the terms you referenced. However, I suspect you are thinking of the LATIN translation of Lev 18:22. That would likely contain those terms because LATIN is where Paul TRANSLITERATED 'ArsenoKoitai' from. This is why the word is not found in ANY GREEK LITERATURE other than Paul's writing and those who discuss Paul's writing. I reached this conclusion several years ago when somebody I knew from a seminary noted that scholars didn't know where the term came from. I hypothesized that maybe, because Paul was a LAWYER (law being an interest of mine), he needed an EXACT legal term that did not exist in the Greek. So, I checked the LATIN (the language of Rome that had conquered the world at the time Paul wrote this term), and there the roots were. I have written about this discovery and have a much stronger theological model than you could imagine about this very subject matter. Once you see what I discovered, you'll never look at translations of the Scriptures the same way again. Regarding the many contrary comments I've read below; -Those 'Christians' scoffing at your analysis are actually blaspheming in matters they don't understand & doing the very thing Peter warned that lawless men would do with Paul's writings: Destroy themselves & their listeners. @@nemo2341000 Actually, I suspect it was added into the Septuagint version of Leviticus by Christians later on to reflect what Paul Wrote using his exact terminology. Like most TRANSLATIONS of the Scripture, the Septuagint was changed over time - occasionally edited over a space of about 500 years. I strongly suspect this is HOW the term got into Lev 18:22.
@@gimmelyod The reason why this theory is most likely incorrect, is because it actually dates back to 250 BC. Which would put it about 250 years before Christ. The scrolls were actually found alongside the Dead Sea Scrolls. It was most likely made for the Jewish community in Egypt, where Greek was common language at the time. So it seems like it actually predates Paul and he never really coined the term exactly.
@@nemo2341000 You may be right. I'm sure that Paul was very well read. He may have used the term because he agreed with the source. However, it is a fact that the term does NOT appear anywhere in the Greek except in Paul's writing, and those who analyze Paul's writings. And perhaps in this version of the Septuagint. However, the Daed Sea Scrolls were part of a repository of literary texts that were maintained - probably up to 70AD when Rome made a wreck of Jerusalem. It still cannot be ruled out that the Septuagint copy you speak of was edited AFTER THE FACT to include Paul's use of the term to better translate Leviticus prior to 70AD. It would be an interesting academic venture.
Who is being excluded from Christianity? Only one type of person, he who rejects the sin payment paid in full by Jesus Christ
Christianity isn’t about one particular sin aka homosexuality, no it’s about any sin is contrary to God’s holiness
As per scripture:
“For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.”
James 2:10 KJV
Even if you manage to keep from 99.9 sins and sin even once you will be separated from God because he is Holy aka that is to say without sin
He cannot allow even one sin into heaven, just look at what one sin has done to earth, how much pain and suffering and destruction has surfaced from one single sin, this is why to accept Christ is to accept God and to reject Christ is to reject God
Either Christ paid your sin debt you’ve incurred thus your soul is sin free by his sacrifice or you will pay this sin debt by your separation from he who is Holy aka God
You decide!!!!
Agreed, as well as one who rejects the Holy spirit, to do that is to tear out what was planted.
Rejecting Judaism is a sin. Rejecting homosexuality is a war crime.

That's not what the Bible "says". It reads "you shall not lie with a male a womanly bed, it is against [ancient Israelite] religion". Of course the apostolic consensus (Acts 15, Galatians, etc.) was that ancient Israelite rules don't apply anymore, so it's irrelevant, isn't it?

You are a false prophet as is anyone who puts the words of men above God's words. And you just did that by accepting the words of translators above those of the actual Hebrew text the passage was written in.Every Rabbi worth his tassels knows that Lev 18:22 & 20:13 are both very specific prohibitions against male/male AnalSex. And that is the ONLY ACT those verses prohibit due to similar Hebrew wording within them. A fundamental principle of ALL LAW is that a commandment may not be expanded to embrace matters outside the specifics of the commandment. (Inclusio Unius Exclusio Alterius Est)

Studying the bible to know what it actually says isn't being a false prophet, it's the very opposite actually. If they are studying it, that means they're seeking the actual truth by questioning what we are taught instead of taking things for granted, which is just as unhealthy. If anything, the "false prophets" are the ones who have twisted the Bible's words to make even the most natural thing look like it's sinful.
If anyone listen to what he was saying, it would be so much harder for them to stick to their old beliefs unless you have personally studied translations of the old Greek texts, and when they were added, you can’t say that you know everything and that what your childhood pastor taught you is automatically right God’s word is good, but humans have distorted and mistranslated it in order to control and oppress others for thousands of years
Are you saying that the Bible has been misinterpreted with the false belief that same gender attraction and behavior is acceptable before God and that, as he is preaching, that our "natural selves" are acceptable and that there's no need to change or repent from anything, as long as we're being our "true self?" The doctrine of repentance is not just central to the Gospel of Christ. It IS the Gospel of Christ. If you believe that it is a misinterpretation of the Bible, then you may as well throw away the whole thing and go find another belief system. Maybe there's an opening in paganism? Or, maybe the druids are hiring?

would you be okay avoiding love your whole life? Are you aware the same thing would have to happen to millions? Even worse… are you aware of how essential is homosexuality in one’s nature since there are biological factors involved and you can see it in too many animal species?
Think before you type “fighting it”. It’s actually a self-erasure in love life
@@SebDan14 wrong. Do you gratify adultery or thievery because of "love"? No... It's all sin period.
God is love
He preaches in his videos that Jesus was a sinner.
If he wasn’t, they wouldn’t have crucified him. Based on the bigotry of his followers, I am starting to think he was actually guilty of theft, that Barabbas was wrongly accused all along, and that Judas was a hero for turning in a dangerous criminal. He should’ve gotten 60 pieces of silver and a seat in the Roman senate. The only reason he didn’t is because he’s Jewish.
Was there ever any confusion about it at any time? Nope!
You could just practice what the Bible says or you can try to find silly reasons to ignore it. THIS is an example of the latter.
No, he's on the right track. The Bible says "it is not good to be alone", "love your neighbour fulfils ALL God's commands", "do not call unclean what I have called clean".
So basically it took 2thousand years to understand a thing that god itself could've wrote or inspired in an easier way and yet not everyone know it. I love christian apologists, they always talk for 5 hours without saying anything logical.
sinners keep trying to justify their sin.
1 Tim 1:6-7 For some, straying from these things, have turned aside to fruitless discussion, wanting to be teachers of the Law, even though they do not understand either what they are saying or the matters about which they make confident assertions.
This guy is a dangerous false teacher spreading a false gospel.
It is not Christianity as per say. It is biblical principles; however, by any means this means exclusion. And, this is what we need to re-define.
Bottom line, both homosexuals and heterosexuals (Christians or not) must live with the choices we make.
Amen. 💜 I can really feel the Holy Spirit speaking through this man. My heart feels full of love. Thank you.
He is a false preacher don’t believe a word he says
That's not the holy spirit.
😂
Me too. I thank God for this pastor!
I agree. If I am to follow the word of god, I will follow the actual word as best as it can be interpreted from the original language, not a biased translation filtered through centuries of hate and bigotry.
Romans 1:26 - 27
You can say whatever you want about Brandan. I think he has the right to do and say as he wishes.
With that being said. He will reap what he sows. And he is bending truth and the word of God to propagate his twisted version of Jesus and God to fit his needs and ideas. At the same time fulfilling the prophecies of the end times. The false teachers that will come to deceive many. There is one of them. Beware of this man.
Exactly! God bless you!❤
Do you stone nonvirgins and eat shrimp?
Or do you pick and choose what parts of the bible should apply to u
where was the truth bent... people like you say so much without citing any actual damn evidence and its so sad to watch... your arguments are so poorly constructed and it is LITERALLY slapping you right in the face but your arrogance blocks you from seeing the error of your ways
yet you don't care to be in his shoes. So you sin instead.
@@tommyg8994his 'truth' is not slapping us bcos its not the truth. And yes he's going to reap what he sow.
Opting out that the verse in Levicticus means homosexuality becuase the ancient society didn’t agree with it doesn’t make sense; also, its source needs to be examined. The Holy spirit won't teach you things that don't match with the what God said in the past. Jesus died for our sins with love; you see there is an absolute about right or wrong. Love and justice can coexist
This talk is not great. One of the most clear and simple Scriptural condemnations of homosexuality is Romans 1. This dude decided to literally forget it and chose to spend 5 minutes on Leviticus
He’s not a believer. If you are believer listen to people that actually believe in the Scriptures
But the WHOLE POINT of Romans 1 is Rom 2:1 "You therefore have no excuse, you who pass judgement on someone else..." Therefore DON'T JUDGE".
@@ronsmith2241 You should have read to the end of your own quote: "... on someone else." The Scriptures condemn judging other PERSONS by their sins as we all have our own. However, the Bible also expects us to discern between actions as righteous or sinful, and to order our lives accordingly. Or to discern whether someone fits the criteria for being a pastor and a teacher of the truth (this guy fails on both accounts). Finally, we are to discern what the Scriptures actually teach. How else can we reject false teachings such as presented in this talk?
@@b.t.c6419 Funny, it's because of "what the Scriptures actually teach" that I think the speakers are correct in what they say and that what you are doing is sinful. Do not be deceived, wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God.
@@MusicalRaichu "Do not be deceived, wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God." We can certainly agree on that much. One of the gravest form of wrongdoing is to deceive the Scripture-illiterate. I suspect that is your typical TEDx crowd. And deception is certainly what this fraud of a secular activist in "pastor's" clothing is dealing in. Sounds like he got to you too.
@@ronsmith2241 Actually, that is NOT the whole point" by a long shot. The point is NOT to deceive yourself about your own sin. One form of that is definitely judging others for their sin while assuming that you are sinless. But let's not forget the other one: Deceiving yourself about your own sin and continuing in it deliberately. Hs being just one of those sins among many others. But according to the presenter, it seems to be the one and only sin that merits an exception. How he justifies that is anyone's guess.
