Possible remedy for leaf opening issue. Try holding a lukewarm cloth around the leaf for a few seconds, a few times if necessary. It helps soften the sheath it is trying to emerge from and you can very gently ease it out if it is at the stage where it seems to be stuck near the tip. This was a tip Jeff of “Everything Plants “ gave. I tried it on my Silver Sword and it worked. Good luck.

Fungus gnats are the reason I've switched 95% to lechuza PON.
I tried everything from Mosquito dunks to systemic... PON is the only thing that's worked so far for us.
We still have the mealy bugs on the new shoots of our sunshine Hoya but dealing with a q tip and some peroxide is nothing compared to those annoying fungus gnats. Fished one too many outta my drinks....and yes I still drank them afterwards🤣
    They loved my coffee ☕️

Ugh last winter was my first ever season growing indoor plants and overwintering outdoor plants in a grow tent. Enter fungus gnats explosion 💥 The larvae actually do feed on your root systems if they get out of control. Watering with those crushed up dunks saved my sanity. Also as they emerge from the soil they are met with a nice layer of Diatomaceous Earth on the surface 💀 which means I have to bottom water for a month. Fingers crossed this bad of an infestation doesn't happen again this year. Now back to the video 😁...

Hi Fern! Thank you for making this nice chill video (again!). Just a remark: fungus gnats for me usually mean... well... fungus :') sometimes bits of soil or leca will have fungus and I won't notice it for weeks untill, like yesterday, I find my peperomia I've been blocking from my vision rotted out at the root, soil covered in fungus. I have no idea if that's the case for you but maybe check your 'forgotten' plants for dead leaves or white streaks on the soil. Plant burnout is real.

I dont keep the mosspole wet either it's just meant to help the plant shingle. The plan is to chop and prop this one on the pole untill I get a full pot then let it down to trail off my bookshelf later on. 🤞😁🍀

Sorry to hear about fungus gnats! They are usually just annoying, but you'll also want to make sure no larvae are doing damage eating up plant roots (if they're allowed to develop to that point). Bottom watering + regular use of diatomaceous earth is how I deal with them, but bottom watering obviously takes longer. First time interacting but love your videos and positivity

Philodendron serpens is surprisingly doing well in my bedroom as well. Keeps growing at a steady pace. I thought it might be iffy like P. verrucosum, but it looks more adaptable. Or maybe I got a more established starter plant. Great setup. Your silver Philodendron hastatum would look great in a botanic garden conservatory. Maybe you can give it away, but keep a top cutting, with larger leaves by air layering it?
Philodendron rubrijuvenile is slow growing for me as well.

I found that rather than spraying leaves when they’re stuck, I have been able to get them “unstuck” by taking a damp and slightly warm paper towel and wrapping it around the leaf for a couple minutes. Or even gently running warm water over the leaf. I’m not sure if it will help with your McDowell but it’s an easy way to loosen the leaf up while it’s unfurling without the risk of breaking it

I'm just at the very beginning and heard you say you're waiting on the Mosquito dunks and just wanted to share a tip for you or anyone else - I just always keep a half of one in my watering can and never go without one and I've been completely gnat free for over a year since doing this! Since it mainly stays whole and slowly dissolves (versus the mosquito bits which get soggy and look bad/mold), there's no issue using it 24/7! Just a thought ;)

My hoya bella outer and inner variegated also thrive outside my greenhouse, weird right! I’ve even noticed cuttings of them rooting better in lower humidity then the usual 90 percent humidity i root Hoya cuttings in!

No lie , I’m laying on my sofa feeling super defeated. Between my dads 5 month death anniversary tomorrow and my husband coming home super late from work and I have a bad feeling about it, I need this for a major distraction. 😞🥺❤️❤️❤️
