Low-key the most diabolical part of this is to make them 2 year offers. Edmonton might figure it out for this season, but the additional salary commitment next year when they need to account for raises to Draisaitl and Bouchard is very problematic for them.

As a die-hard Blues fan, it’s been wild to watch Doug Armstrong and the team essentially jelq the Oilers with this latest move. Armstrong’s been on a bit of a cold streak recently, but this time he really pulled one over on Edmonton. After years of questionable decisions-like letting Petro walk for a small difference in salary while locking down Faulk and Krug for a hefty sum-Armstrong needed a win. And boy, did he get one.
Bringing in Broberg and Holloway is like a masterclass in getting the most out of a situation. Broberg was impressive in the playoffs, and adding depth to the roster-especially when we’ve got someone pushing 40 in the lineup-is a huge plus. Holloway at less than $2.3 million is a steal, especially given his knack for scoring clutch goals in big moments.
The best part? Watching the Oilers get fleeced for some second and third-round picks that likely won’t matter in the long run. It’s almost poetic that Stan Bowman, with his Blackhawks baggage, is now the GM of the Oilers. It’s like everything lined up perfectly for Armstrong to make this move without much backlash. Finally, it feels like we’ve got some good news to celebrate as Blues fans.

Resident Blues fan here, Doug really cooked with this one, and it's at a time that was very crucial for both the team and himself as a GM. Army has unfortunately been on a cold streak for years, he had a couple good moves here and there, but he ultimately deconstructed a 1 of 1 Stanley Cup winning D-core. Letting Petro walk for a mere 800k when he just brought the team its 1st championship ever, and the alternative was to pay Justin Faulk and Torey Krug 13 mil for term is a really hard move to think about looking back. But its about what we can do, and not about what we could've and should've done. I'm really exited about Broberg to be honest, loved him in the playoffs, and I can't see how more depth can hurt the team when we're currently dressing someone who will be 40 by the all-star break. Holloway at less than 2.3 can't possibly hurt the team and he scored some absolute beauties in Edmonton's comeback wins. I really couldn't care less about those 2nd and 3rd rnd picks, not with the amount of promise and immediate impact on the table. It feels nice to have some good news for the first time in a while. Its probably a coincidence, but it's very funny to me that Stan Bowman is now the Oilers GM and used to be the GM of the Blackhawks. I wonder if a little bit of historic rivalry mixed with the League and Gary deciding not to punish the Blackhawks staff for negligence hatched a perfect opportunity for Doug to send out an offer sheet and get almost zero bad press.

An absolute slam dunk by Blues and I love it!
I think this should be the standard in the league. Someone is tight on cap, they have some really nice RFAs, former 1st rounders. Why not take advantage and seize the opportunity. You either flip 2nd and 3rd into two 1st or your competition is forced to hamstring themselves. It's just a calculated move.

These moves by the Blues were perfectly calculated. They knew the Oilers had to get McJesus/Drai/Bouchard extensions in the next two years and they gave Broberg/Holloway two year deals each in their offer sheets on inflated prices. The Oilers basically can't match these without messing up their cap situation in the long run...
Also, the truth is that the Oilers overspent during the off-season and left themselves vulnerable. Not signing either one of Skinner/Arvidsson and gave a $2-3mil extension to Broberg and a $1.7mil extension to Holloway would have been the correct move. Not sure why the Oilers would decide to be over the max cap and had no money to re-sign these players...

Honestly I thought that the leafs were vulnerable to a pair of offer sheets for no compensation this summer in Connor Dewar and Nick Robertson (and still are for Robertson). A rival GM could offer Robertson 1.5 million, which is likely more than the leafs can afford to give him, and would not need to offer any compensation to the leafs. Well worth it for a 22 year old who still has some serious upside and already shows 20 goal potential. Connor Dewar was in a similar situation before he signed.

    • @Leafsdude_
      @Leafsdude_ 28 дней назад

Leafs could still make 1.5M work on their cap. They'd likely have to go with a 20-man roster, but they could do it. Robertson (apparently) doesn't want to be here anymore, so I don't think he's going to risk that.

Great move by the Blues, how far off were these offers from what Edmonton was willing to pay. Holloway probably not that far off, Broberg probably pretty far off. St.Louis knows that one of these guys will stay and one will probably go that’s why the double offer in my opinion. However, all GMs are aware that the Blues are ok with this, can’t wait for the Jake Neighbours offer sheet.

The one thing I disagree on is the fact that this is a heist by the Blues... no it's not. It's a TIDY piece of work is what it is!! I mean, Mr.Clean should be jealous of that one. Welcome back in the league, Bowman!! (ouch!)

Would it have been extra greasy (clever) if they did one offer sheet, let Edmonton start to make plans, then drop the second offer sheet 1-2 days later and then Edmonton has to start all over again lol

Got GM’s out here playing chess ♟️ while others are still hitting the snooze button 💤 😴.

How could this also effect the Draisaitl's extension. Even if the cap goes up and you match the offers. You are under serious pressure to fix this year and not screwup next year......not to mention, how do players in Edmonton feel about Bowman?

Take away draft position, I think a 2nd & 3rd would be worth it based on production for the two players.
If I’m Edmonton, I let both walk, take the picks and go shopping. Maybe a team like MTL who currently have too many NHL D. Be aggressive on waivers during camp and maybe sign a vet to a PTO or league min contract (JVR, Shattenkirk, etc.).

Could potentially use those picks to upgrade Ceci to a better younger option perhaps.

@@vipeholmskolan6052 They were good in moments for sure, but not overall difference makers. It sucks to lose them, but not devastating.

I like this format better. I hate jump cuts.
