I'm pretty sure the team said it's after sirens like noisemakers, but I personally chooset to take "siren" as the mythical creature because that, as a team name, kicks ass
Might have been mentioned already, but a lot of the weird team names do have meanings behind them. Examples include: The Red Sox/White Sox were named by sports writers based on their uniforms. The 76ers were named for the year the Declaration of Independence was signed (in Philadelphia) The 49ers were named for the year the California Gold Rush began The Blue Jackets were named for a nickname of an army division from Ohio during the Us Civil War The Flames (which dates back to when they were in Atlanta) were named for the Great Atlanta Fire back at the end of the US civil War
"Beatles" was also an homage to Buddy Holly's backing band, The Crickets. Buddy Holly was an early hero of theirs. (Also, there was a guy on a flaming pie. IYKYK)
The reason it was New York Giants for football and baseball is because it is traditional in Europe to have a “club” operate across multiple sports. For example, when someone says Bayern Munich, you assume the soccer team but they also have a basketball and handball team of the same name. They also have supported chess, bowling and table tennis.
I'm definitely getting a Montreal Victoires jersey, and the best team name in the PWHL is the Boston Fleet IMO. I like the Toronto Sceptres logo, but who the heck thought that Sceptres was a marketable name? Swing and a miss there.
48:02 Probably not the first to say this but this segment about team names making no sense gave me huge opening of Baseketball vibes and I love it. We’re so back boys.
“The Philadelphia 76ers' name comes from the signing of the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia in 1776. The team's name was chosen by Walter Stahlberg”. Not just a number 😂
The apathy with the Leafs feels like when an amusement park doesn't have a new attraction. The Leafs attractions are hope and while there is new leadership there isn't a new guy to go WEEEEEEEEEE over. It's fine and you'll enjoy your time but a lot of folks aren't going through the gates with a Hell Yeah.
For the logos on the ice, i think it depends on how intricate the logo is because Detroit and Tampa still paint their logos, but those are the only teams i know for sure do and they both have single color, relatively simple logos
The name discussion is spot on. If the team is amazing and winning, that will make the brand feel notorious and legendary. Nothing else unless it’s for terrible reasons.
Something funny I found out about Martin Marinčin while searching for that Vancouver goal Steve was talking about I saw a video showing all of his goals. Of his five career goals, two were game tying goals against the flyers
An interesting note on the Sutzles new agent, is that Moritz Seider is also represented by Claude Lemieux, so that is the 2 young German stars, that some how got missed in the list of players he represents
Claude Lemieux is also Mo Seider’s agent. Works for 4Sports with Peter Forsberg and headquartered in Switzerland. So makes sense from a European perspective for Tim to change agents considering the European network 4Sports has
My hot take for the Leafs this season is that with Matthews being the new captain, and with his rep for being a Selke candidate, the new coach leans heavily on Matthews in critical defensive moments, and Matthews crumbles beneath the weight. I have a feeling Matthews has a less than spectacular season coming up.
Just a comment on the Utah center ice thing. That technology has been around 15 years or so. I first saw it used in curling clubs. It is a safe bet that the technology migrated from hockey to curling.
The vast majority of people that were saying “Oh, Stützle wants out” were not Sens fans lol. Most of it was coming from other markets/fan bases just to get jabs at the team/fans. And Stützle went with Lemieux since he represents Seider (another German) as well as other European NHL players. Apparently Seider already has some endorsement deals in Germany, so Stützle probably wants a piece of that.
I work at a local rink here in Madison and we have two high schools play here and both center ice logos aren't painted. Only a few NHL teams paint their logos.
So quick thing about Nylander… they said they were going to try Nylander at centre last year long term … they never did that tho because Minten had such a good pre-Season and made the team.. So they never actually tried Nylander at centre for more than like 5 seconds.
Thanks to Adam for clarifying the point about the Canadiens name cause yes it does have historical/cultural significance. The team was created to give a chance to French Canadians players, in a time were they had barely any opportunities to play pro level hockey and also to give French Canadians fans a team to cheer for considering Montreal had 2 clubs at the time (Wanderers & Shamrocks) but both were for the anglos.
The New York Rangers were founded by Tex Rickard. A Texan. Who wanted a team in Texas. Which obviously would never have worked in 1926. They told him "you can have a team but they'll probably work better in New York." He agreed on the condition he can still call them the Rangers.
Very interesting conversation about team names in all North American pro leagues. I myself wonder if names like Red Sox, Maple Leafs, Packers or any kind of number like 67s, 49ers and 76ers would be chosen today
Marner, Crosby, and MacKinnon all training together. Mitch and Sid to Colorado would be insane. Rantanen up next summer too. Obviously complete speculation but hadn’t thought of it before
Leafs fans love blue collar teams because historically those have been our most successful ones. Despite the franchises age there is a dearth of real “generationally” talented players. Montreal has a murderers row of HOFers, Boston has a history of elite Norris calibre defensemen like Orr, Borque, Chara. Edmonton had Gretzky, Kurri, Messier, McDavid, Draisaitl. Pittsburgh Lemieux, Jagr, Crosby, Malkin. Buffalo has had the French Connection, Vancouver the Sedins, Islanders the likes of Trottier and Bossy. You get the gist. The Leafs best or most skilled players were either pre-1967 where things like highlights and people who watched are just lacking, and since then they had guys who were great, but were either just a step below the truly elite (Salming, Sittler, Sundin, Cujo) or who’s primes weren’t long enough to be considered among the best (Gilmour). Not to mention this franchise has loved shooting itself in the foot historically and screwing themselves out of truly elite talent, like failing to recognize Bobby Orr who was in their own backyard, or trading away draft picks who became HOFers like Lindros/Niedermayer or Luongo. Anyway, when this team went “deep” in the playoffs (Semifinals and no further) those teams were dragged there by blue collar, lunch pail guys. Gilmour, Clark, Roberts, Tucker, etc. All highly skilled, but they also played physically. This era of Leafs is uncharted territory for this fan base. Matthews, Marner, and Nylander are the most skilled forwards this franchise has ever had, and by the end of their careers should they stay will be atop the leaderboards of scoring stats. All three could be HOF just by breaking the 1000 point threshold. Tavares potentially too for that matter. And yet they’ve tasted zero real success. No playoff success, no real regular season success (No Presidents Trophy or Divisional crown). They make the playoffs, play like they’re scared or they lack heart, and then they lose. The losing hurts a ton, but because the way they play is the antithesis to how this franchise has played when they were successful, it makes people dislike this core a lot more. The perceived overpayments also don’t help.
if all we talk about all season long in leafs fandom is the playoffs, it's gonna be a brutal season with brutal vibes, that we cultivated ourselves no less lol
Couple things here. The Beatles were named after the Marlon Brando movie The Wild One. The motorcycle group was called The Beatles in the movie. Also....... New York Giants not Brooklyn Giants......
The VICTOIRE logo reminds me of home plate, the USAF logo, and the bird shape in the middle is reminiscent of the Alouettes logo of the CFL, combined with the M for Montréal...as for the New York Sirens the lines on the outside are like the flashing of a siren. Torch - Meh Sentinels - Eng, more associated with men. Tempest - Alliteration? Meh, Sceptres - Toronto was known as the Queen City, we have Queen Street, Queen's Park, Queen's Quay, the Queen Elizabeth Way, and Queen Elizabeth visited Toronto 7 times, more than any other Canadian city.
We want to see a team that doesn't disappoint every year. These have been the highest paid players in the league before a few of the newer signings. Need to switch the mentality from not wanting to lose, to needing to win for more money.

My Nephew was 7 and wasnt sure about deer meat which his sisters (who had an aversion to meat when they were younger and tbh I wouldnt be surprised if they turn into vegetarian/vegan as adults) were ABSOLUTELY REFUSING to eat. Great to have you back guys Go Leafs Go!!!!
Not me thinking the 'Sirens' in NY Sirens referred to the singing mermaid monsters from Greek mythology instead of cop cars... 😂😂
I didn't take "siren" as a police car but the mythical creature that lures ships to their doom.
Jesse's interpretation had me face palm and laugh that's for sure 😂
I'm pretty sure the team said it's after sirens like noisemakers, but I personally chooset to take "siren" as the mythical creature because that, as a team name, kicks ass
Same. That also makes the name even cooler that they are mythical sirens
Pretty sure the "Sirens" are not supposed to be Firefighter or Police Sirens, but rather the mythical creatures
The Thrashers were named after the Brown Thrasher which is the state bird of Georgia. Recovering Thrashers fan in GA here.
Sirens could also be luring you onto the rocks like in Homer’s Odyssey.
The name discussion is honestly a top 5 moment of the podcast. I have been crying laughing and can’t stop. God we’re so back
The New York name search must have been quite the odyssey.

The name discussion was classic, had me rolling!
NY Sirens logo looks like a confused CBC logo
Names don't matter is unironically the best take on this show ever!
"Beatles" was also an homage to Buddy Holly's backing band, The Crickets. Buddy Holly was an early hero of theirs. (Also, there was a guy on a flaming pie. IYKYK)
TIL!
54:25 It was the New York Giants and the New York Giants. Dodgers were the Brooklyn Dodgers
Corson, Green & Tucker were one of the most hard nosed, toughest line to ever suit up for the Leafs.
The reason it was New York Giants for football and baseball is because it is traditional in Europe to have a “club” operate across multiple sports. For example, when someone says Bayern Munich, you assume the soccer team but they also have a basketball and handball team of the same name. They also have supported chess, bowling and table tennis.
"Guy who went to Detroit... scored a bunch of goals""Alfredsson?" Ouch Steeeeeve that one's painful
Oof madone he wasn’t wrong alfie scored 18 goals for Detroit 😂
The BEATles
I can't get over it, I am 31 years old.
So close Jesse. The baseball team was called the New York Giants not the Brooklyn Giants. You mixed the Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Giants together
I'm definitely getting a Montreal Victoires jersey, and the best team name in the PWHL is the Boston Fleet IMO. I like the Toronto Sceptres logo, but who the heck thought that Sceptres was a marketable name? Swing and a miss there.
They’re definitely all different names and I like them all tbh
gay
SO many people are going to constantly misspell sceptres.
@@LaceyArtemis you got me after spelling “spec” 😂
Good thing they named their teams a year after……,.
Toronto Gridlock, Toronto Traffic
To clarify: Brooklyn Dodgers moved to Los Angeles

I can't begin to explain how happy I am that someone else noticed this and was bothered by it lol

We have our new Nick Robertson is a defenceman meme because Sennecke is a winger

Shout out Auntie Lauren! 🙌
Hell Yeah! Broccoli Rules!
The "vibrations" on the sirens logo is the visualisation of the doppler effect.
“The Philadelphia 76ers' name comes from the signing of the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia in 1776. The team's name was chosen by Walter Stahlberg”. Not just a number 😂
I mean....duh....1776.....Philadephia...
The Ottawa 67's are named because Canada's confederation was in 1867.
And the SF 49ers are named aftet the gold rush. Still just numbers...
The apathy with the Leafs feels like when an amusement park doesn't have a new attraction. Sirens like the singing Greek mermaids maybe luring other teams to their defeat
Thank you. Was agonizing listening to them talk about cop sirens
Same! @@CS.94
Was the first thing I thought!
I do not understand people liking Minnesota Frost, but it’s not my team so I’m happy for you guys lol
Hope to get a Dangle/SDPN event in DC again. Had a blast getting to do shots of Jameson with you last time around!

Adam trying to protect the PWHL and their names so hard 😅
On the topic of team names, the BCHL now has two teams named the Bulldogs. Totally not confusing at all
If I recall correctly Lemieux worked with Graf hockey which is based in Switzerland which might explain the agent change?
I wonder if Ottawa is already gearing up for a move to Calgary once the new arena is built.
Ottawa Charge logo looks way too much like Andrew Mangiapane's blind drawing of the Flames logo
An interesting note on the Sutzles new agent, is that Moritz Seider is also represented by Claude Lemieux, so that is the 2 young German stars, that some how got missed in the list of players he represents
Steve is back calling a Forward (Sennecke) in the OHL a Defenseman!
A few of the PWHL logos are very copycat of other nhl teams (whalers, flames). Really odd to take a year and then not be creative at all
Claude Lemieux is also Mo Seider’s agent. Works for 4Sports with Peter Forsberg and headquartered in Switzerland. So makes sense from a European perspective for Tim to change agents considering the European network 4Sports has
Does anyone else scream “THATS SO MANY GAMES” along with Steve each time he says “there’s 82 games”
Commanders were originally the Boston football braves.
@Jesse Blake, the Giants baseball team was based in Upper Manhattan in Polo Grounds! The Brooklyn team was the Dodgers!
My hot take for the Leafs this season is that with Matthews being the new captain, and with his rep for being a Selke candidate, the new coach leans heavily on Matthews in critical defensive moments, and Matthews crumbles beneath the weight. You can bury 1.15m as long as it's not a 35+ contract. It's league minimum (currently 775k)+375k
I think the Sirens represents those mermaids that sing out to sailors and then obliterate them. They were called Sirens.
Torn does not necessarily mean a complete tear, while rupture always means a complete tear.
Leafs isn't even a word. The name debate is hilarious 😂😂😂😂
I can be included in the fact I didnt know the BEATles were named because of...yeah. This is news to me. wow. haha.

The Raptors should have been named the "Saurus Rexes".
Also to Jesse’s pointed about the red and white Sox in baseball and the Knicks are short for knickerbockers which are basically just baggy pants
I think Steve was dead on with “The Ottawa Guard”
Do you guys think offer sheets are going to happen more often now? Especially on bigger players like Sid, Mitch, Conner etc?
The Original ice team was awarded to Edmonton and the owner was Ed Chenowyth who relocated to Cranbrook.
They say the Sceptres colours are royal blue, but it looks more teal to me.
So quick thing about Nylander… they said they were going to try Nylander at centre last year long term … they never did that tho because Minten had such a good pre-Season and made the team..

I'm excited for the year and they added good players all new coaching staff like the team is good they will break through eventually
I actually like Sirens less for the noise and more for the Greek mythology. Their beauty and song that draws men to their doom.
Very interesting conversation about team names in all North American pro leagues. I myself wonder if names like Red Sox, Maple Leafs, Packers or any kind of number like 67s, 49ers and 76ers would be chosen today
Some NHL teams still paint their ice. I know the red wings and blackhawks still paint it on
I don’t know if they still do it, but the Avs have had season ticket holders paint portions of the centre ice logo in previous years
The logo for NY Sirens should be a red and blue light!
It makes way more sense to try marner at center than it does to try nylander at center.
I look outside and Yes! All of Southern California is burning!

Thanks!
Look up St. Louis Cardinals cause they had that in the late 80s for both 🏈 and baseball.
The Winnipeg Ice are no longer they are now the Wenatchee Wild.
Jesse, they're the New York Football Giants because of the New York Baseball Giants. The Brooklyn team was the Dodgers that moved to LA.
I think the sens is still a painted centre ice. Them or the Canucks show them painting the logo in the hype video

There's Steve calling players defencemen when they definitely aren't again.
Where or who is the Leafs Marchand, Chucky, Bennett, Wilson, pick your high end "tough guy". They need one.
