Unless you were at the very end of your career, there was no way anyone was risking getting blackballed from the NHL for whooping their coach.
That being said, with a reputation like Babcock’s, who’s to say that whooping his ass wouldn’t endear you to a lot of franchises knowing what they probably know of Babcock. And if your reasoning for doing it was “I’m protecting EVERY player in this room from his abusive tactics”, you could probably get rewarded for it. It’s whether you wanna take that chance. There’s definitely a hierarchy in pro sports that the head coach is not to be challenged. There’s exceptions to that rule. Babcock was one of those exceptions

Leafs needed more depth defensively. It's not Keefe faults. A heavy shot from the point is needed badly and we only have one offensive defenseman. You can't skate through a bunch of players in the playoffs. The defense gets that much tighter. Counter that with heavy shots from the outside and hunt for rebounds. We change this simple thing and I guarantee you we're making it past the second round and contending regularly.

I would also add that Boston was willing to give all 3 of their 1st round picks to Carolina for a chance to draft Hanafin at 5th, so had the Leafs moved down for the 3 picks, they could have had Matthew Barzal, Kyle Conor, and Tomas Chabot. The Barzal pick would have negated overpaying Tavares as a 2nd line center, and Conor and Chabot would have added much needed depth.

They pull crap to both motivate players and also exercise their control over them. One of the best ever, Scotty Bowman, was very disliked by many of the Canadiens players. Professional sports is different from EVERY OTHER profession where your boss is making a fraction of what his underlings are making. In their mind I’m sure they ‘need’ to pull control stunts to keep that authority in check. Babcock clearly took things to the extreme but he was also successful…why is it a shock to these guys that the ‘cabal’ of coaches still talk with him? The way these guys are talking about these players, they’re acting like their children…get a grip boys…this is a big boy league, people are not always going to be nice to these men. Not to mention all the racism I had to hear from my own damned teammates as a black guy. Hockey was filled with awful tyrants, I have had to come to terms with loving the game and hating the people. When I was in decently high lvl junior I genuinely hated it and was a wreck.. I had a coach who got fired for racism, single me out, call me fat, and embarrass me in front of everyone.
