- God of War Ragnarok changes a lot to the God of war world and canon. But its biggest impact is actually on Kratos and how it finally completes the arc that he's had since the first game. Let's explore the intricacies of Kratos's character as well as how Ragnarok affects him.

It's fun to see a character grow in such a touching way. God of War is that one franchise that did the right job at every corner of big judgments. Whether Santa Monica we're extremely lucky or whether they played the easier toss. Eventually, it led to such grand world-building and how it connects with viewers. Thanks to everyone who put their heart into this game
I think the biggest reason for the stark change in games 1-3 and 4-5 is just that the devs had different goals in mind. The first games are hack-and-slash when that sort of thing was at its peak, so violence and sex whoopie haha yayayayay!!!! but then Santa Monica studio decided to finally go to the next level and elevate their storytelling. They didn't really want to tell a three-dimensional story with the first 3 games, but they do as of 4 and 5. themes and *story* are not the same thing. The first three games have mature and somewhat complex themes, the last two have mature and complex themes *and* stories. ramble over
The biggest difference between the og games and these last 2 is that the og games put gameplay first, story 2nd while these last 2 games put story first, gameplay 2nd
Think about it GoW1 is known for having a great story I mean it kick started the franchise but the whole "story" is mostly flashbacks lol
*It's gets me emotional when I see how much Kratos changed to a better person 🥲*
Kratos hasn’t changed he’s always been a deep character
Yeah I bet that's what you call snobbishly "character growth"
Who says you cannot also grow evil and vice versa?
The God's made him a soldier not a warrior because soldiers fight for someone else and warriors fight for what they love
Huh? They're literally synonyms both are just people who fight in wars
I love the more complicated, older Kratos. He's more real, or at least more relatable. Great work as always!!!
I kind of don’t agree with saying that Kratos is free. He is not actually free. He is better as a person/god and he finally accepted many things, he might be in peace with his past, but he is not free. Keep in mind he can’t get rid of blades of chaos no matter what. At least not yet.
"I out her down by that river it's you brother that carries her still" kratos is free bc his past no longer has a hold on him. He learned to live with it which is acceptance or in other words freedom
One of many reasons i love newest version of kratos is him holding back for entire norse saga
Kratos has come a long way from being a badass godslayer to a dork who holds back his power
Kratos is over 1000 years old I’m pretty sure his regrets weighed so heavy on him by the time we pick back up with him in 2018. By Ragnorok we learn that he finally expects better from himself not just those around him.
What I'm going to be very interested to see is what the direction the series takes from here. We've obviously had the set up for visiting the other pantheons + Atreus' new purpose, but who will it be as? Atreus would make sense as a spin off game (Uncharted Lost Legacy style) which could lead into the next main game. Maybe he gets trapped in Egypt which pulls Kratos into conflict once again? I also refuse leaving Sindri in his current state!
As much as you are correct that Ragnarok is a good culmination of Kratos' arc, from a business perspective it wouldn't make much sense to play a "God of War" game, without said God of War. If nothing else, Kratos' moves/weapons are what define the series, not many games have weapons like the Blades of Chaos or feel as good as the Leviathan Axe to use, so losing those would take away from the series' identity.
Next game could go into Kratos' desire to be a god worthy of praise/love (as Odin previously mocked him for), but considering where Ragnarok has left off, I don't know where Santa Monica Studios can go to make such a moving story that 2018/Ragnarok managed to tell. Though in saying that, Egypt would be a notable next step, with one of the big plot points being Kratos' heart being weighed on the Scales of Justice, to see if he is 'worthy' (and if not, Ammit would be a cool boss fight!)
Homie really needs to get some play
he goes to egypt and goes "mature" doom slayer on them
I think everyone is waited with baited breath to see where the God of War series is going from here! The ending of Ragnarok really left us with a world of possibilities! I agree it would be hard to do a god of war game without Kratos but maybe that’s what they’ve been working at this whole time 🤔 maybe next game will be all Atreus and then some Kratos cut aways like the opposite of Ragnarok! The original series sort of made Kratos basically invulnerable to the world and gods around him, there was no problem that couldn’t be punched through! With the advent of the new Kratos and the new worlds I’m excited for the future and the stories they can tell!
Regardless of where the story and world go, it’s clear Santa Monica know what they’re doing!
But also yeah Egypt does seem fun 🤭
Kratos is one of the best reformed characters.
*Ruined
Every character development he got from 2018 ruined by Ragnarök's character transformation. Kratos really needs either Jaffe or Barlog to be written good.
What? Ragnarok was the full realization of Kratos' character lol. Ur tripping
@@lucidstudious750 no it's not he wouldn't talk about his dead wife or daughter out of nowhere with Freya and also when he kills Heimdall it's treated like a big moment but he was just protecting his son from death same when kratos fought magni and modi and killed magni to protect him why is Heimdall different when there all about protecting Atreus
@@lucidstudious750 there's some great RUclips videos about the game I could type the name's of proving that the game isn't the masterpiece everybody thinks it is
@@lucidstudious750 lazerzZ has a great 2 hour long video on the game it's not a bad game just disappointing in my opinion
@@cody9168 I just watched the video again to make sure I didn't miss anything. Basically the reason it felt disappointing Is because the ways in which Ragnaroks story was a downgrade from 2018s was more noticeable than ragnaroks subtle storytelling. The video touches a lot on the lack of subtext and subtlety in Ragnarok which is funny bc he missed a lot of the subtext the story presented (big example was his take on Freya, Thor and Odin probably where the game uses the most subtext to tell the story)
I agree and disagree with the video in places. It's clear that ragnaroks story was inferior. 2018 GoW was one of the best stories in any media we've ever seen so the gameplay itself had the biggest flaws. In contrast Ragnarok improves the gameplay side in nearly every aspect, but it's story takes a hit. So its better "game" but worse story. Also the tone contrast between the gameplay and cutscenes didn't help at all
I suggest you watch some analysis videos on the story that focus on what it did well
"Thor the broken god"
"Freya the scorn goddess"
"God of war 2 changed fate then did it again"
"Defying fate god of war Ragnarok"
Those two videos above really highlight just how nuanced the story actually got. And if you can learn to just ignore those flaws a bit (some of them weren't even that important tbh) I'm sure you'll enjoy it more
I wouldn’t say fixed but rather improved upon his character
God of war Raganork made Kratos 1D character Kratos in the OG series and 2018 was a better character
@@li_yankeeking5478 not really 1D when he’s more open in ragnarok than he was in previous games and had a better relationship with Atreus in general
@@Nightlizard1564 did you play the same game I did
@@li_yankeeking5478 clearly not if u think if he was 1D not sure wtf u were playing bruh💀😂
@@Nightlizard1564 in RAGNAROK all he was was Atreus protector nothing else
Odin Hiemdall and thor got off way too easy.
That's the point though? Kratos's character arc is meant to free him from his bloodlust and thirst for vengeance and turn him into a more serene and peaceful man who can care for others
This man Is definitely not religious
How was that relevant though?
@@rohanthomas4134 Mind your business
@@conorr9918 what business is it yours if he religious? Why is it relevant? And if you didn’t want someone to respond, why did you comment under a public video in the first place?
@@rohanthomas4134 what business do you have with me commenting under a video 😴😴😴😴
Where did this come from I’m so confused about what compelled u to say this 💀
You blaspheme trying to compare God Of War 2 with Ragnaslop.
