NBA Adopts The 3-Point Line | The Gimmick That Changed Basketball

  • When the NBA debut its 3-point line in 1979, it was seen as a gimmick - something implemented to get fans more excited about a game that was far less popular than it is today.
    And while it was slow to gain traction, the NBA’s marketing tactic was ultimately transformative, profoundly reshaping the way basketball is played and paving the way for a modern game that revolves around the trey ball.

    The NBA was slow to adopt things but to put into perspective how long it would take to produce talents that were influenced by the 3-point line 5:32 shows the wave of individual 3-point specialists that would come within just a 4 year period. One of them would be the father of the best 3-point shooter in history. One of them would be the guy who defined off-ball movement that would net an open catch and shoot 3-ball opportunity. Scott definitely deserves a mention because he was the first from my memory of the 90s that would strive for high volume (7.7 3FGA in 95-96) along with high accuracy, shooting 3FG at 42.5%.

    Larry Bird made the 1st 3-pointer in the All-Star Game (1980). Julius Erving made the 1st 3-pointer in the NBA Finals (1980, Game 3). Danny Ainge was the 1st player to make 100 3s in a season (148, 1987-88). I think the 3-point competition during All-Star Weekend is more exciting than the Slam Dunk competition.

    3 pointers are somewhat easier than midrange for some

    • @momo.maru-kun
      @momo.maru-kun Год назад +1

      because you only need to shoot 1/3 of your shots to get the equivalent points and midrange shots are 90% not set shots you have to work for it and create your own shot, while 3 pointers 99% of the time, you just need to wait for the pass. So yes, midrange jumpers are alot difficult than 3 pointers. MJ, Ray Allen, Kobe, KD, they are a league of their own in those mid-range shots.

      @fumihiro8564 Год назад

      @@rareview362 You also have to consider how specific defensive schemes will prevent you from taking these 3s and will only give you the mid-range. Thinking Basketball made a good video about the mid-range, the game has just evolved to where teams are now taking much more efficient shots and letting the top of the top guys create for themselves in the midrange, guys like KD, Demar, Booker, Tatum are all guys you fan rely on the midrange even if they clamp the 3 and the paint

    Basketball is getting boring I started playing in 1974 in organized league and there wasn’t a 3 point line
    Here’s why
    Everyone going to the NBA is measured if they can shot 3’s and the game is creating selfishness period
    I say remove the 3 point line and you will see the game change to a team sport and strategy will be back into the game and more people may come back
    It’s boring if your not dunking your shooting a 3
    “REMOVE” THE 3 Point line

    3 point shot has been around for decades. modern basketball and the 3point shot didnt ruin basketball. if 3 points is too much for a shot. and one plays shouldnt exist either. fans take on shit they dont play doesnt matter. theres nothing wrong with the 3. whats wrong is every player on every team being three point shooters. this is a bad take. yes entire groups of people can have bad takes

    NBA is a joke. The only league in the world to change its rules to "increase scoring and make it more exciting for the fans". Defense should be prioritized, so the offense would evolve inevitably to compensate for it.
    That being said, the 3pt line was a good change and every fucking player on every fucking position should be able to shoot at least 35% from 3pt. Its the whole game's point to put the ball through a hoop...

    • @roronoazorro9509

      That first part isn't even close to true. Every sport does it. Rugby has continuously changed its rules to favour running and increase tries scored and in soccer they implemented the back pass rule to improve the pace of the game to increase fan enjoyment an scoring.
      Those are only 2 examples. Every sport is about entertaining fans.
