yes guys, I get it, its because hes white. that went over my head making this video, my mind was on the nba at the time, not the worlds race issues at the time. should have made that point but didn't, my bad
Rusty Buckets luv your vids also good idea about the logo how they change it
You should Try graphique design give it a chance
It's not cause he's white
it was 1971, and the best white nba player, it was because he's white
Unfortunately racism was a factor in everything.....
But we can look at that logo as a sign of unity and change as well.
To change it would be like changing the Nike swoosh.
shaq wouldn’t even fit in the logo
He is too!!!! Big!!!!!😂😂😂😂
@@julianaaddison8774 Thank you Dr. Obvious 😒
Yao ming wouldn't.
He can as long as it’s square.
Neither would ayesha curry
The logo is so iconic. I don’t want it to change honestly. And even if there was a change I wouldn’t want it to keep changing every decade. Once the logo is changed it should stay for at least 20-30 years.
I agree, but unless Jerry states in his will to his kids not to sue the NBA once he passes they will either have to pay up or change it
Rigved Goyal I agree it should not be changed. It is a classic and it's on tons of merchandise all over the world. Symbolically as well to have Jerry West, a poor kid from Virgina dubbed "Zeke from Cabin Creek," as the logo portends that anyone from any walk of life, no matter how obscure, can achieve great things in the league through dedication, hard work and perseverance.
Its gonna eventually change, I can bet money it’ll be either MJ or Lebron
Lou Che that will be sad because so much tradition is there. Jerry is very humble and never expressed the desire to be the logo, never got paid nor ever requested to get paid. MJ or LeBron would no doubt demand huge huge royalties, because that's the mentality these days. If the NBA was willing to change it and cough up the huge dollars involved, then I think it would set in motion future changes as well, as MJ and LeBron are both somewhat forgotten when new and better players come down the pike. I think Jerry's logo is just such a cool image taken from a real photo of him driving with the ball. But really so many great players thru the years, how does one pick? Maravich, Kareem, Wilt (no doubt the greatest of all time), Russell, Magic, Bird, MJ, LeBron, Akeem, Duncan, Havlicheck, Oscar Robertson, Dr J, the list goes on. Here's an idea. Not just one logo. Have multiple logos. Fans could stock up buying NBA gear with logos of all their favorite players.
He was from WEST Virginia. Not Virginia. They are two completely different states.
The reason the logo works is due to the aesthetic and representation. technically, it's a brilliant design. They shouldn't change it.
They should pay Jerry something tho
Draymond’s nutkick definitely has to be the logo
which one
He's like Pat McAfee for your testicles
Facts
Lol, that would be awesome. I love this way more than I should. Have him and also Adams as the recipient of said nut kick, that way there is diversity in it as well. Let's start a petition!!! BALL UP!!! Hahahaha
😂🤣😂🤣😭😭😭😭
Nah, I like the logo the way it is. MJ already is his own logo. Jordan Brand isn't going anywhere.
Dr0pkidd a jordan logo wouldn't be the jumpman jordan logo
+Rusty Buckets still, a more modern star like Kobe or maybe Curry would be a better pick
numberonekpfan why curry
The Sherminator None else but Jerry fuckin West should be the logo it's basically Infringed in the NBA it cannot be changed

I don't think it was because Jerry West represented the soul of the game, but I think it's the picture of him. Looking at the picture, you can see the moment, always feel the scene unravel and it almost makes your breath hitch. The raw emotion and power that was in the photo probably radiated the same energy and vibe the NBA did to the guy who created the logo.
Why change it? It’s one of the most enduring monuments to the history of the NBA. Especially since it’s become such an incredibly iconic design.
This should be Jerry West’s accomplishment for having been a pioneer of the game, rather than just being something that rotates around to suit changing moods.

You should make a video on the absolute ridiculousness of early nba drafting.
Like how there were a dozen rounds and teams would draft like business men in the later rounds and stuff.

Yes. I'm so in support of this idea.
Yes that would be good

In those days, only 12-14 players were drafted and expected to have a chance. Willis Reed was drafted 10th (first pick on the second round) and was considered lucky to play. 10th best in the country and lucky to make the NBA.

You forgot to mention two of the most important NBA players that contributed in popularizing the league: Magic and Bird. They’re both all-around players and leaders who prioritized great team play and winning basketball over meaningless individual accolades. They deserve to be the inspiration for a new logo more than any other player you showed, but regardless I wouldn’t want the NBA logo to be changed.
Magic definitely is at the top of the list for a logo change
Magic passing the ball would make for a good logo

I feel like it really wasn’t about skill looks or race that made him the pick over other players. In a design perspective from me I would just choose the best picture of someone to pick as a logo.

Interesting topic!!
I think the logo fits well, because it's probably not too difficult to find other dribblers take up roughly the same position every time they drive. If anything, the logo foreshadowed the golden age of the dribbling guard. Nowadays that's part of the essence of basketball. How well u can cross someone up or blow past them
Can u do a video on ur top 5 players for each position
Demetri Konstantopoulos those videos tend to not do that well. I try to do videos that aren't done by most youtubers

I think Nba should make an yearly event where they change the logo for sometime portraying the greatest players of all time in the logo (one player each year) and also put it on the merch and sell it as limited time collectors edition
When you talked about Shaq 9:35 was what i was thinking off and saw it later in the video 😂
How come we never hear Jerry West in the GOAT conversation? After all he is the logo of the entire league
9:53 I like this one
I appreciate your idea, but don't we already have a hall of fame for honouring the best players?
Also having the same logo creates a sort of history behind the league which let's be honest makes it stand out. Also the current logo is really nice.
Like your idea about the Logo.. Changing it every decade.

Great ideas, you should get in touch with the nba and pitch some would like to sone of these come into fruition 👍🏾
TBF the NBA logo is one of the most recognizable logos in the world I'd guess. And being Jerry West, who is humble, and knowing that 80% of the people in the world have seen you in play but don't know your name might be the greatest accomplishment.
Maaan I loved it when said MJ should be the logo
The logo also had to do with Jerry West being a white player. The 70's had a testy social climate, it was easier to be safe.
Tony Boy because it CLEARLY looks like Jerry West? If they rebranded the NBA logo into the sillouette of lebron or KD you'd be able to tell wouldn't you? Use your brain.
As a kid I always thought the logo was MJ. Got a little older and noticed the logo is actually a white man. Then figured out that man was west. So yes I can tell.
Any proof of this?
Mercurydylan89
Look at the hair. So-called ‘black’ men don’t have hair like that.
Just Bake black people have all type of hair dummy
That’s like say all white people have blonde straight hair and blue eyes 😂
The gene pool is huge nowadays
If the logo changes to another player the NBA will have to pay him. Jerry West doesn't care for the $$ so he's really the perfect guy for the logo. He's an absolute legend and a champion on every level
Luv it .. Hope what you're saying gets out there and they make that change. Lerbon is my runner up but Kobe all the way for the logo !!!
Why should it change? It's been the same for how many years now? It's iconic, just leave it alone, regardless of who it's supposed to portray. Those saying it's just because he's white c'mon. Regardless of whether that was the intent or not, let's leave the racism out of this. We all know the league is like 85-90% black or something like that, honestly who even gives a shit about the logo? I don't watch the NBA to see the logo then turn the game off, I watch to see some basketball. The logo is just there for branding purposes, doesn't take anything away from the game or it's players today. With that being said I still believe they should leave the logo alone for recognition, Although it wouldn't hurt my feelings if they changed it to someone else. No active players though and no to Jordan's image. its already too iconic on its own and Jordan was/is an asshole. Even as much as I hate the Lakers, wilt or Russell would be a worthy change. I would vote for Tim Duncan though, loyal teammate, strong in game, humanitarian outside, proven champion and his bankshots are well known. Hell of a team player and that is what it takes to be a champion these days. Look at GS, they have 4 HoF'rs on the team and run it every year. Pretty much shows that the league isn't a "put the team on my back and win" game anymore. Unity on the court and Duncan is a model for that.
Sidenote- I'm a rockets fan, not the spurs. I just respect Duncan that much.
Spurs fan that respects (H)Akeem that much.
I would say its pretty racist for the time but the fact that west also turneeld out to be a fantastic exec as well is good enough for me.
Just saying 4 out of 5 are really known and the only white guy who’s record isn’t all that good got chosen
I want that logo to be lebron getting angry on jr smith during nba finals game 1.
I love your point buddy
Very good ideas! Logo as an achievement. All your points were absolutely valid and accurate and awesome job giving us the origin. I would also add one more thing... in a league that profits billions of dollar per yr due 100% to its African American players (no one comes to see any white players), it should doubtlessly homage it's cash cow.
JR Smith should be the logo "Hennything is Possible"
2:49 his name was "Chamberlain" not chamberland my dude
Chamberpot dude was ass
Underrated Mystery
It jus looks damn good as the logo, jus like Jordan's Jumpman logo on his Shoe brand does...
Kobe should be the logo now. RIP :'(
No. Jordan is THE biggest name in basketball. I'm not saying Kobe wasn't special, but let's be real here.. I'd say leave it be.
@Siddharth Singh .look at you, making a choice based on emotions. good luck.
@@Arizona9001 It is not so emotional. First off, Jerry West doesn't take any profits from the NBA and is quite open to having the logo as something else. Secondly, we have lost one of all time greats in such a tragic accident. What he did for the league and basketball is exemplary and should be known for generations to come. This could be the best way to pay homage to Kobe. Now, you will say, what will happen when the GOAT like MJ would die. But, until then we can have it as Kobe's. Also, it is quite normal for NBA teams to change their logos, so NBA could also do it periodically (say some decades)
@@sidrockx95 nigga its iconic

I'm here from the future to say that future you is in better shape and has a much better microphone
Michael Jordan should be the logo
In 1971, when logo was created, Jerry West was the best player, with the best shot and best form, also great ball handler/passer/defense/all around skills- essence of basketball. In 1970-71.
Jerry was NBA scoring champ 1970, Finals MVP 1969, a 10X All Star/All NBA 1st Team, NBA All Defensive 1st Team 1970 (1st time), etc...Russell was most dominant player in 60s and retired in 1969. So AT THE TIME, 1971, it's almost no brainer to see why the logo was modeled after Jerry West. If I had to change I'd choose Magic Johnson, who played all 5 positions, because Jordan already has a logo. And if I had to choose a Big, I'd choose Russell or Kareem. Lebron if had to really update, but too recent.
Don't forget what he did as a management. He bought Championship everywhere he went. With the Lakers Shaq and Kobe era, and than Kobe and Paul era. He then went on to Golden State and put them on the map with his dealing and drafting. Nobody made the more high profile trade and came out ahead than Jerry West.
I don't understand this at all. None of that explained anything. Why is there this weird criteria it had to be someone in the league at the time. Also wouldn't a silhouette of the most "dominating player" be the same as honoring him & capturing the essence of basketball.
Peter, that is a great point. While that wouldn't have been a consideration at the time, it has only added to the legend. It difficult to imagine A better choice than West.
I don't think big muscular dudes like Magic, LeBron, and Shaq would make very good logos. Obviously Shaq has the dunking logo but that's already taken and probably isn't 'sleek' enough for an NBA logo if you know what I mean.

Haha good point
You're 100% correct. These idiots annoy the crap out of me. 6/13 attempts is the truth. Not this 6/6 lie.
The NBA ripped Jerry West off.
Nah bruh.. Jerry West made a career out of losing to Bill Russell and the Celtics. The NBA must've felt bad for him and made him the logo instead of Russell. They even gave West the first ever MVP award after losing, yes _losing_ to Russell and the Celtics at the end of Russell's final season. Which is why they now call it the "Bill Russell Finals MVP Award".
Yeah he doesn't get paid for being a silhouette on the logo, but the way that certain laws operate the NBA owns that image despite it being an image of Jerry West.
He really didn't get ripped off at all. The NBA has kept him employed for the last 40 years so.. it's not like they hung him out to dry.
@Dats a paddlin Yeah, duh.. I was being sardonic man.
If the NBA hadn't made a so-called white player their logo, they would've lost even more viewers in an already intagrating league.
*The NBA still to this day goes out of it's way to establish itself as a diverse league. Though despite it being a fairly diverse league, they still feel the need to highlight their so-called white players for mass appeal. Implying them as if "white boys can ball too".. which is just redundant because everyone knows that, it's merely just a stereotype.*
*Players such as Porzingis, Doncic, Jokic, who are very talented, have yet to really accomplish anything. Despite that they are bolstered by the media. There are even times when they are referred to as "superstars". Even hall of famers like John Stockton and Steve Nash are praised for never winning a single championship.*
Nevertheless the league is (and always has been) predominantly dominated by so-called black players. So to counter that, the NBA must praise and exalt it's so-called white players to maximize their audience.
@HIDDEN GAMUNG West is the NBA's logo simply because he was one of the more talented and most popular white players at the time.
*Brian Scalabrine literally wasn't even a thought then because he wasn't born yet..*
Bill Russell has 11 rings in 13 seasons.
But most of them would have been impossible without Bob Cousy.
He ran the offense and scored.
Bob Cousy was the best PG before John Stockton.
Havlicek has to do with some of the rings also and others.
