The Golden State dynasty owes a lot to Jerry West as well. Prevented Klay from being traded for Kevin Love with all his might. And I think he was in the war room for Draymond. Not to mention his history with Kobe and the Lakers. Jerry West knew great players when he saw them. May he rest in peace.
Yeah, everyone knows how he created the Lakers dynasty, but the Golden State dynasty also wouldn't exist without him. Them wanting size with Kevin Love makes sense, pair Steph with a big who can also shoot. But West foresaw the Splash brothers.

I remember years ago hearing about when he played at WV and was selected to play for the East in the college all-star game. He had East on the front of his jersey and had West on the back! He will be missed…

@QuindellSmith-sl5ep it was on tnt after they had the all star game the year they announced the 75 best players of all time. He was on a 3 man team and they were doing a mock draft of what players they would draft from top 75 and buitheir best teams out of that. He was at the 25, 50 and 75 best nba players of all time. During the show he said he wouldn't be at the next 25 year announcement being the 100 best players of all time. I believe they announce it every 25 years the league has been around. It was a fun show to watch and he was on a 3 man team and it was pretty cool to see what teams were created out of the top 75.

As a kid, I used to speak with Jerry West by phone when he was the Lakers’ GM. I know for a fact how generous he was. You are not lying. Mr. West was a real one!

As a Celtics fan and 73 years old, I saw Jerry West every year he played the Celtics. Great player one of the all time players, a goat, great man.

He always shows a lot of love to the older generations. A shame that tradition hasn't continued. Young guys today would say it's because they've been disrespected by the old heads, but it's really a chicken or the egg situation. If you just follow tradition and respect your elders even if you hear some disrespect from them, they'll eventually return it to you.
He has been doing it for years now, only he can honour the legends like that

My mom's best friend was Dorothy sharmin her husband Bill was the coach of the Lakers and he took me to the locker room I was6 year's old wow I met Jerry Wilt Elgin and the team Jerry was so nice to me I'll never forget that moment !!RIP JERRY WEST just imagine being 6 and looking up to Wilt amazing moments

As a 67 year old West Virginian and a Mountaineers fan Jerry West was a hero to many of us growing up as a kid here in West Virginia. One of the most competitive people ever in no matter what he was doing. Rest In Peace, Jerry West. Condolences and prayers to his family and loved ones. I will remember him always for making his people of this State so proud.
My dad discouraged me from having sports heroes when I was young. He loved sports but didn't think what athletes accomplished was worth all the adulation. Still it was impossible for me not to think of West that way. The main thing was how he never cheated the game. I mean never. He got every last ounce out of the great talent he had. And I think also he was one of the greatest examples I've ever seen of the pure competitor. He was defeated so many times but came back more determined. I'm very rarely sad when a sports figure passes but I am today.
RIP to a legend. Modern fans have to understand about Jerry West as a player, he was the most complete guard offensively and defensively before Jordan. He went to 9 NBA Finals, had more 35+ point games in the Finals than anybody else, 5th all time in playoffs ppg at 29 PPG, averaged 27/6/7 without a 3pt shot, and of course was arguably the greatest executive in NBA history.

@@dusk6159 One of the best moves Bill Sharman made when becoming Laker coach for the 1971-1972 season was to put Jerry on the point and have Gail Goodrich as the shooting guard. West was used to averaging around 30 pts/game and his scoring did dip a little to 26 pts/game. The tradeoff was that Jerry led the league in assists that year and they also got 26 pts/game from Goodrich as well! BTW having two guards in the same backcourt both averaging over 25 pts/game? That Laker team that season is the only one in NBA history to ever accomplish that feat!
Bill Sharman got the Lakers their first Los Angeles championship with one of the most dominant teams in NBA history. I doubt we're ever going to see their record 33 game winning streak fall. Not surprising - Sharman got a ton of hate mail from Celtics fans for years after that, calling him a traitor for helping their nemesis!

I'm 66 years old, my favorite players, West, Pistol Pete, Kareem, Oscar Roberson, and Doctor J, as a kid watching, wow, they were iconic.
Larry, the Dr, Clyde, Bernard, and David Thompson are my starting 5.....didn't realize the impact on the game JW had...thanks for sharing
I got to meet Jerry West in 1962-63 when I was still in high school. The Minnesota High School League would not allow me(or my dad) to sit near him on the bench when he came back to MN for a benefit game for Benilde High School...(they would also not allow any photos to be taken) Bob Short owned the Minneapolis Lakers at the time but he always brought them back for a Benefit Game for Benilde High School for a few years. So, West met with my dad and me at the Raddison Hotel in Minneapolis after the game. He came to our table and stayed at least 30 minutes with us discussing basketball and fishing in Minnesota. I still have the letter that allowed me to meet with him--a treasure I will give to my sons and grandsons. Class guy and I am very sad about his passing. There will never be another one like him in my lifetime...and I am now 77 years old. RIP Jerry West!

A true legend in the game. Among his many accolades scoring 25,000 points, being elected three times in the NBA Hall of Fame and the only player to ever win the NBA Finals MVP on a losing team. Thank you Mr. Clutch and thank you Logo Man for all the memories. 🙏

The 1960s was the beginning of the modern NBA, with guys like West, Russell, Wilt, and the Big O who had the talent, smarts and athleticism to succeed in any era.

My kid brother would take the bus to practice at UCLA, Polly Pavilion. Jerry West was there one day. My brother got a few pointers from him. It was one of the happiest days in his life. You will be missed.
Jerry West has to be in the dozen greatest players who ever played when u consider his stats, his clutchness, how great he was on both sides of the court, and of course his impact on the game. But he may also be the greatest executive in basketball history, maybe American sports history. He truly earned his place as the leagues logo. He may never get the full credit he deserves from the public, but he always will for me. He gave me the greatest joy as a basketball fan growing up by trading for Kobe, knowing what his potential was. Thank you Mr. West. Rest in Paradise.
Jerry "The LOGO" West was not only one of the greatest players in NBA history, he was an amazing GM and had a keen eye for talent. He saw something in Kobe that no one else could see and he was right!!! R.I.P.

As a player, it really is unfortunate that he only got one ring. He is one of those that deserved many more.
Life gave the rings as a GM.
More than that, he was an ambassador for the teams he worked to. He convinced people to join the organizations. Even in Memphis, likely his less remembered work.
He built a championship machine in LA, made the Grizzlies a team that was more in than out of the playoffs, won first round series, was really a hard team to play against, was decisive for the Warriors dynasty, and made a good effort with the Clippers too.
I always thought it was suspect when he was in Memphis and gave Pau gasol to the lakers for nothing. Anyway still every team he was involved with improved. Even the hapless clippers

I remember watching him on TV. Whenever the Lakers were in a bind, Jerry took over… and changed the course of the game. Such a dominant player, truly Mr. Clutch. And an even finer human being.
Most superstars in sports have a much diminished impact once their playing days are over... Jerry West's impact was just as huge, possibly even more than when he was playing.💖Best Wishes to Mr.West in Heaven!

Jerry West was so smooth on the court back in the day,i remembered a story in the paper when i was 14 an the 33 game winning streak bk that year,he had wore the converse out so he signed them a gave them to a fan,an the very next game he lost the streak was over RIP JERRY WEST!!

I saw Jerry play on TV from my grandma's country house in Kentucky when I was 10. I had never seen basketball before. After I saw Jerry, I decided I would play, and try to play like him when I could. I couldn't play like Jerry, of course, but I'm still playing at 66, and all of that is because of Jerry. I felt like my spirit animal left me a week ago.
As a young teenager, I remember watching Jerry make that half-court shot at the half against the Knicks in 1972. No one, NO ONE has ever done it since. We lost a legend that will never be seen again. R.I.P., Jerry.

As a longtime Celtics fan , I remember watching Jerry West playing against the Celtics in all of those championship games back in the 60's and early 70's. He was truly a great player and the leader of the Lakers. He is definitely one of the top five shooting guards(2 guard)of all-time. He is also very overlooked as one of the greatest players of all-time. Definitely a top 10-15 player ever.

I drive through West Virginia on 77 about 2 times a year. Always think about the great Jerry West when i see the Cabin Creek sign. Lol. I actually met Oscar Robertson at the deli in Krogers in Cincinnati and he actually was super nice and signed an autograph for me. Those 2 guys were far ahead of everyone else in their day. RIP LOGO

It was always remarkable to see how the game's greatest players -- BIll Russell, Michael Jordan, Shaw, Kobe and many. others - revered him. There's a very telling video from the NBA's greatest 50 players event. Jordan makes a particular point to make his way through the crowd of legends and warmly embrace West. The respect and admiration was obvious.
I saw him play from 1965 on. Led the league in TS%, scored 30 points per game, led the league in WS, was first team All-NBA every year he was healthy and all NBA defensive team every year that it existed. Known for scoring in tight situations. He was jealous of and nasty to Elgin Baylor while they played but became very critical of himself and his feelings later in life. That sums him up, always trying to improve.
I didn't know him personally but he seemed like he was just as great of a person as he was a basketball player, same with Bill Walton. Just gr8 guys, condolences to both of their families and friends ❤ RIP

Jerry West was a visionary, combined with athletic talent and a huge heart. We, in WV, like to claim him as our own, but now he belongs to the ages. I'm sure there was a huge welcoming committee, including Kobe, waiting to show him around his new home🥰
