I wasn't even old enough to have watched him but when I got obsessed with the game about 20 years ago he became one of my favourite players to watch on RUclips and listen to. Anyone old enough to have watched I crave stories of his games please. I love the guy and and I'm so sad today.
Dan's story at 4:52 choked him - and me - up. Seeing Dan Patrick get this emotional is very rare - but it speaks volumes of the respect and love he had for Jerry West. I caught the very tail-end of Jerry's career, so I didn't see him at his absolute peak, but I have come to understand that he, truly, was one of the all-time greats. And seeing Michael Jordan's tribute to Jerry West earlier - saying that he would have loved to play against Jerry and, even more, play WITH him. I mean, wow, those are not words that Jordan utters very often. That is also incredible respect for Mr. West. But a beautiful tribute by Dan Patrick.
Tough stretch for DP. Bill Walton and Jerry West. Two legendary figures in the game of basketball. I always loved how Jerry was so soft-spoken when doing his interviews with Dan. He knew the game like a few others did, but shared it in a way that wasn’t in your face. A terrible day for the NBA and sports in general. Rest easy, Jerry.
Dan, I went back and listened to your comments as you learned about the passing of your friend, Jerry West. I sat here and cried again. Thanks for showing us that it is OK to show emotions and care about the people who touched our lives. Mark
"do your job"? Mr. Patrick you (in ten quick minutes) gave insight into a LEGEND, whilst being taken aback. You ALWAYS DO "IT" better than anyone I can muster off hand. I'm sorry for your & ALL our loss. Your guys were SO GREAT TOO‼😢Thanks 🙏🏻 for the superb coverage thru the decades with utter class.
He was my childhood hero. I had the good fortune to spend time with him in Maui at a basketball camp he and Magic did. He was straightforward, genuine, 1st class, and one of a kind. I am heartbroken but I'll cherish the memories for the rest of my life....❤
I had an aunt, who I lost 10 years ago next month. Her name was Jerri West. When I was a kid, I felt so cool being able to tell my friends that, joking about it and such when I was in grade school in the 60s. Always wanted to meet him to tell him that. R.I.P. Mr. West. 😌
Jerry West is one of the greatest players of all time. Like Dan, I saw West play and he was so great I couldn't take my eyes off him. He had a super quick release on his picture perfect jump shot and his career stats are so good it's almost ridiculous. The year the Lakers won their first chip in LA, 1972, West led the NBA in assists and still scored about 26 points a game. Add to that, West was also man all-NBA defender so he was a complete player. RIP Jerry West, one of the greatest players ever.
Thank you Jerry West forming the 1980s Showtime Lakers and the Kobe-Shaq era. You will always be on the NBA logo aka Mr. Clutch! RIP Jerry you will never be forgotten!
He was, and IS a man we should all aspire to be. The perfect example of class, humility, and talent personified. Rest in peace, Logo. Hope he gets to embrace Kobe now.
I grew up near Jerry. Dan's emotion reflects what a decent human being Jerry was beyond basketball. Decency is sorely lacking these days. Jerry was decent. What more can one say?
Love the emotional transparency Dan’s part. I share his deep sense of loss. 44 is the only NBA jersey I would ever wear. He still holds the record for a round of 18 at Bel Air CC.
I did'n't have the fortune of meeting Jerry West, but my earliest memories of basketball included him and I went on to love the game, playing in high school and staying active nearly to my 40s when an Achilles tear sat me on the sofa. Today's NBA holds no interest for me, but Mr. West set me on a path with many happy memories of playing.

Thank you, Dan, for showing your emotions for Jerry West. I am 76 and grew up watching him like you. He was the professional of professionals. God Bless him for having shared his talents. There will never be another Jerry West.
Jerry West a true classy man. I think about Chick, Jerry and Kobe being apart of my childhood. This is going to be a hard one.....I wish so much I had been able to see him play or see him at the Forum.
@@gerrydooley951Just cause you think someone’s death hit “harder” doesn’t mean another death can’t hit other people just as hard. By the way, Kobe wasn’t still playing, he retired in 2016. And Jerry won a Championship. 0 for 2, bud.
I met Jerry at a event at a local car dealership . He was the nicest person ever . Patient, was cool with everyone. Took a picture, told him thank you for helping turn the Warriors into a winning team . He mentioned Dan Patrick , says that's a good man right there . Rest easy .
He doesn't get the recognition he should. For the role he played with the warriors. Threatening to quit if they traded klay for kevin love. Then convincing Kd to join. Just an all around great basketball mind and person.
Jerry West lived with, and in that sense overcame, an awful anxiety disorder most of his life. That he didn't let it ruin him for the people in his life is attested by his friends here. I heard him on tape with Mad Dog today talking about the people he admired: the givers. He suffered a lot, but found a way to give so much to others. The true measure of the man.
Was a Lakers fan since the late 60's, Jerry West was my favorite player, nothing but a class act and a fierce competitor. His book, West By West is excellent, and gives a inside look on his life. RIP Jerry, you will be missed.
Just went and watched the clip of the surprise appearance by Mr. West on DP’s 10 Anniversary episode. DP getting emotional makes it even tougher to deal with
After reading about him, I had no idea that he didn't think highly of himself and didn't think he was really that good...what a legend!!! "the logo" is all anyone needs to know about his impact on the league.
It was very clear, throughout his appearances on the show, that Dan Patrick had the highest utmost respect and admiration for Mr. West. Dan was actually the first person I thought about when I read the news. Mr. Patrick will never read this, but just in case: I’m truly sorry for the loss of one of your heroes.
Ok, now I'm crying 😢. I remember the great Jerry West as a player in the 60s and 70s. Sorry DP. It's that time in our lives when the golden ones are leaving. Loved your interviews with him over the years 🙏🌹
We lost a giant in our game today. One of the few, if not the only, that was an all time great player and GM, and equally as great of a human. RIP to the Logo 😔
Jerry West way before my time but recently watch some videos about how good he was. Some of his stats are very amazing and he had a great career that shouldn't be forgotten due to time. RIP to a true legend, the Logo!
No shame in crying! I was the same way when Kobe passed away. Couldnt control my emotions at all. Living in LA, tomorrow i'm heading to Staples Center and placing some flowers at the Statue of Jerry West for you Dan Patrick.
Apologize if I don’t know the gentleman’s name here, but I really appreciate everything he had to say about Mr. West especially the idea that it would be a great opportunity for the NBA to recognize West & cement that he is the logo. West was always about the first name Jordan said he would’ve loved to compete against when telling people it’s unfair to compare eras & rank the best. Also, Walter Payton was my first sports hero too.
One of my first sports heroes, along with Wilt, and made me a Laker for life. My father loved him too … and remembered him being drafted and playing with Elgin. I shed tears today for someone I didn’t have the honor of meeting. That doesn’t happen often. It sure did this time. Rest easy, Mr. Clutch - and thank you.

Dan, as always, very real and touching. We lost another legend. You said, you wanted to be like Jerry West, I did as well, but not as a player. Paulie and Dan. Locally we did get to see him on tv. I'm 73 and I grew up watching him tv. I had the honor of meeting him. He was the perfect gentleman. Classy . And very down to earth😊
I grew up idolizing the Celtics but there was Mr. Clutch, The Logo, not too far away and usually in the way of my idols towards the coveted championship. He finally got his in 1972 in record-setting fashion. Such a class act. Adieu, No. 44. We knew you all too well. The NBA is what it is in no small part because you graced its courts and halls.
