Great interview ... it gets better and better ... watch and listen to every word ... the ending is both touching and funny. Thank you Dan Patrick and thank you Jerry West.
Jerry West was one of my boyhood sports idols - Sandy Koufax was the other. West is a classy and successful individual and a great role model. The Lakers were fortunate to have him for as long as they did.
This guy speaks well for an old man/legend. "I saw a game in football in the southwestern conference, it was 71-65...their basketball team don't even score 71 points!" typical spread offence results in football, Jerry West was spot on there
The thumbs down might be for Dan Patrick for asking useless questions. Dan needed to ask good questions like: 1. How do you know a player will be a star or a superstar? 2. Who were some of the players that you drafted you thought were stars or superstars but were a bust.
Today you have people that have not done ANYTHING noteworthy thumping their chest like their the best thing since sliced bread. And then you have Jerry West who accomplished lots of incredible things that is humble as the day is long.
I have been listening to Jerry West interviews for about a month now What impresses Me is that he never speaks Ill of anyone, is incredibly smart and thoughtful. He also has a lot of demons he is dealing with from what I understand and doesn’t take it out on anyone. He is a true inspiration to me. Would love to just talk and listen to this man speak about anything.
@@vodka4680 Definitely. He was ridiculously good. Great passer and defender. One of the greatest scorers ever. His pull up jump shot was a thing of beauty.
I dont think ANYONE cared more about winning, than Jerry West. Winning only one championship , you can imagine what his life was like , especially considering his childhood. He never gave up , though. I love this man & have the utmost respect for him.
You mean like allow hand checking right? Yeah we do. Handchecking is currently illegal. They need to make it so that it's allowed. That's what you're saying right?
They got Marc Gasol in return who is five years younger than Pau and has turned out to be just as good, if not better, for them, so it's hard to argue that the Grizzlies got robbed. What looked like a bad trade at the time turned out to be another Jerry West stroke of brilliance.
West obviously already had a relationship with Mitch Kupchak so it definitely made the deal easier, but really the deal was a good one for both teams. The Grizzlies at the time of the trade were 13-33 and going nowhere. It was looking like Pau, whose contract would expire in two years, would move on in free agency. If you wait until the year his contract expires, other teams know you're under duress and won't give you a good deal. So West put together the best trade he could at the time, giving the Grizz some solid building blocks as well as cap room, and, of course, the Lakers the missing piece to a championship contender. He also sent Pau, who had been the lone bright spot for Memphis, to a place he knew would be a good fit. The Lakers already had what they thought was going to be their big man of the future in Andrew Bynum, making Marc Gasol, a very promising prospect, expendable. They also wanted to get rid of Kwame Brown and Memphis was happy to take him since his contract was expiring, giving them flexibility to make deals. They thought they were getting a terrific young guard prospect in Javaris Crittendon, who ended up being an idiot. Luckily, they traded him for a first round pick before he started racking up criminal convictions. Anyway, many of West's deals during his career seemed odd at the time, even if they turned out great in retrospect. I remember many journalists thinking he had lost it when he dealt Vlade Divac to the Hornets to draft a 18 year old high school player that most in the league thought would be a good NBA player at best. They thought he was even loonier when he shipped Anthony Peeler and George Lynch for basically nothing in order to free up room to just make an offer to Shaq without knowing for sure he'd take it. That's three starters for a high school kid and just the chance to sign O'Neal. Hell, I remember people thinking he was nuts for drafting Divac, way before European big men were in vogue. I've just seen too many of his moves turn out to be great to doubt him.
There is no DOUBTing his brilliance, but he gave the Lakers a gift. Kevin and Minnesota gave former teammate Danny Ainge and Boston Garnett so it happens. But a gift is a gift whether from a genius or a dummy!!!
Jerry West was a guard who had no fear to go inside and challenge the trees. If that path closed he could pull up quick and pop a jump shot being at the time a bigger guard a chore to defend
Jerry was great, a pure shooter, great defense and rebounder. But I'm not a fan of today's NBA. Run down shoot a 3, rebound, run down shoot a 3. No ball movement working for a good shot like it used to be and too much "entertaining" going on. This is not real basketball! It's good to hear Jerry voice his displeasure with the player (s) who passed up for sure points with lay ups in lieu of the dreaded 3 pointer, and missed.
I don't know Jerry......Hakeem Olajuwon did the job handling Shaq for the Championship in 1994-95. Four game sweep!!! The Dream!!!! Top three player of all-time. Michael, Oscar + Hakeem....
Even back when Jerry West their was a FEW that was as good as Mr. WEST was. This what laboob james doesn't understand. Michael Jordan was asked was he the GOAT he answered he can't say that he was GOAT because he had never played Jerry West, Oscar Robertson and Bill having 11 championship rings but good old laboob james says he is the billy goat and MJ laughed at laboob james.
This what I'm been talking about NBA u cant play defense the game is about water down its hurting the game . That y I cant give LBJ #1 over Mike is 2 a chip wasnt to many 3s & crying team up . This era music boxing NFL NBA is weak .dam I miss the 90s
Pistol Pete wasn't a great shooter? Maravich didn't make the players around him better? Is Jerry West on narcotics this night? Red Auerbach said Pete was the best ball handler that he ever saw...Magic said he learned to pass by watching Maravich. I would put Pete Maravich and Connie Hawkins on my all time starting team...I bet they would kick a$$ too.
All this hype about Jerry, I don't see it or get it. Maybe for his time, but meh.. whatever. Bad take on his part at 16:05, way too 1940s mentality, too traditional. Easy pass, I wouldn't take him on my team period.
Great interview ... it gets better and better ... watch and listen to every word ... the ending is both touching and funny. Thank you Dan Patrick and thank you Jerry West.
Jerry West is so humble. He still holds the record for average points per game in a playoff series at 46, that's how great he was.
Seven game series. Jordan did it in a three game series.
Jerry West was one of my boyhood sports idols - Sandy Koufax was the other. West is a classy and successful individual and a great role model. The Lakers were fortunate to have him for as long as they did.
Mine too
I got to see him hit the winning shot over Walt Frazier to win the AllStar game at the Forum.
Who thumbs down Jerry West? Fools.
You right Man!
This guy speaks well for an old man/legend. "I saw a game in football in the southwestern conference, it was 71-65...their basketball team don't even score 71 points!" typical spread offence results in football, Jerry West was spot on there
The 1971-72 Milwaukee Bucks.
An idiot that just wanted to be a contrarian.
The thumbs down might be for Dan Patrick for asking useless questions. Dan needed to ask good questions like:
1. How do you know a player will be a star or a superstar?
2. Who were some of the players that you drafted you thought were stars or superstars but were a bust.
I remember watching Jerry play...great shooter and passer! #44 kicked butt!
Jerry West is the one player I idolized growing up. What a classy guy.
He was top notch as a player, coach, and GM.
Today you have people that have not done ANYTHING noteworthy thumping their chest like their the best thing since sliced bread. And then you have Jerry West who accomplished lots of incredible things that is humble as the day is long.
My first idol. Not just for his play, but for his class. He won the Finals MVP in a losing effort! Only player to ever do it.
great stuff, Jerry is a great guy.

One of the G.O.A.T.
Great player - a joy to watch . 1972 Lakers , one of the best teams I have ever seen
A great player and an even greater GM/Executive.
He was greater as a player, Mr. Clutch, The Logo.
He was equally good at both.
Agreed. All around a great man.
honeslty that’s undercounting him as a player. this guy was so damn good people don’t even realize
@@vodka4680 Definitely. He was ridiculously good. Great passer and defender. One of the greatest scorers ever. His pull up jump shot was a thing of beauty.

Excellent interview
What a wonderful person, I wish I could spend time with him all day.
I saw Jerry West play against Penn State & Mark Dumars in college, at Rec Hall, University Park. Fantastic!!
I could listen to Jerry West all day. Would love to sit with him and pick his brain about a few things.
He may be Mr. Logo, but for me he will always be Mr. Clutch. Insightful interview.
The Logo, Mr Clutch, that jump shot, his class,
My basketball idol growing up.
Only player to win Finals MVP on the losing team, that's mighty hard to do
Need to get rid of the hand checking rule, Jerry is right that this is the easiest era to score.
You mean like allow hand checking right? Yeah we do. Handchecking is currently illegal. They need to make it so that it's allowed. That's what you're saying right?
Sometimes I wonder how many points Isaiah Thomas would have scored back in the 80's if they had those same rules.
Van PastorMan or Jordan
Great player, just imagine if he played with a 3 point line...A great executive too, even though he GAVE the Lakers Pau Gasol!!!
They got Marc Gasol in return who is five years younger than Pau and has turned out to be just as good, if not better, for them, so it's hard to argue that the Grizzlies got robbed. What looked like a bad trade at the time turned out to be another Jerry West stroke of brilliance.

Kenny Jackson And Garnett is never anything but injured. This guy seems to miss more games than Bill Walton! With half of Walton's talent though.
Jerry West was a guard who had no fear to go inside and challenge the trees. If that path closed he
could pull up quick and pop a jump shot being at the time a bigger guard a chore to defend
The LOGO!!!!!! is my favorite all-time
jerry west is the man
Jerry is ALWAYS A LAKER!!!
awhhh he blished when you brought up the logo:)
The Original Combo Guard.

Jerry West may be the Logo, but more than that, he is honest. Everything he says about Steph rings true to me as a fan. I buy it, all of it.
He was Mr. Clutch.
winning time may have gotten the look but they never got the personality. True nba fans know that and we respect the hell out of this man
Mr Clutch Jerry West 🏀
Logo
Top 20 of all time
Why would you take a 1 foot shot as oppose to a 25 foot shot, a lay up...the big O and the logo always took the best shot...
Jerry West was a great player and a good 2nd to Oscar Robertson. Both fantastic men.
2dasimmons Not sure he was second to Oscar. Much better defender for one thing. But both best of their era obviously.
I don't know Jerry......Hakeem Olajuwon did the job handling Shaq for the Championship in 1994-95. Four game sweep!!! The Dream!!!! Top three player of all-time. Michael, Oscar + Hakeem....
Jerry doesn't look a day over 50, crazy how he is almost 80 years old #44
Sounds like he's very attach to the warriors now.
Wade H That's the logo on his paycheck.
And now he works for the Clippers.
the LOGO! Forever!

He is so dead honest
He's the best...
Jerry West 髮型數十年不變,很厲害
10:20
Prime Jerry West vs Prime Michael Jordan?
MJ man, no question.
Probably jordan but damn west was a badass too.
tubenachos I dont even like mike, but c'mon man...
Exactly Manny, Jordan most of the time, but Jerry will get his too.
A better question is....... prime kobe vs prime Jordan!!!!
As talented as he was he's just as good at scouting talent
Lakers need him back!
Yet the Lakers had no clue that the Clippers got West and taking over the Staple Centre by 2019...
RIP logo.
Phil Jackson gave this video 7 thumbs down! What a shame....
It's almost like it is not fixed.
RIP
The game is so changed bc you got unskilled players with little to no education from books or life
Classic
Disrespect for the team. You only respect clay and curry. James want a ring.
Zeke from Cabin Creek
Superstitious? You were like 1 & 8 in the Finals bro...maybe you should have took a cab

The White Kobe.
Better than Kobe
+Ray Petree Better than MJ
CutThroatKiller hahaha
He's probably the only white man who isn't racist. Great, great player and man.,
He's just honest, no BS.
Calvin Chu I know that's why I like him. He's a straight shooter unlike most devils.
Larry Bird?
It's a shame you're a racist
Ray Petree Bird has said some lowkey racist stuff in the past but he's a legend no doubt.
could listen to #44 all day
