    as an irishman, i dont understand how tommy can retell the Flight of the Earls so inaccurately haha. it had nothing to do with poets; it was the last gaelic lords of ireland, attempting to sail to spain in order to recruit an army and take back ireland from the english, with the help of the spanish. they just never ended up coming back, and the old gaelic order was finished.
    tommy saying the irish arent good architects when an irish architect designed the White House is also crazy

      The best stories always have a bit of 'flair'... embellishments. That's what takes a good story from a person just telling it to someone being a seanchaí, a poet, an artist...an irish drunk even! And let's face it, that was effectively Tommy's point , so facts be damned. Hes keeping the beautiful creativity of our culture alive😅

    As an Englishman who grew up on the great Billy Connolly and then other stand ups and groups like The Goon Show, Tommy Cooper, Around The Horne, Steptoe and Son, and eventually Eddie Izzard and Bill Bailey, amongst so many others, Tommy Tiernan has always been my fave living comedian after Billy Connolly.
    He used to present the Stand Up show on late night BBC, and I would wait desperately for it. His specials are something else and I love whatever else I can find of him.
    To see him with my favourite American comic (in fact the only one who is genuinely great at this time, though Louis CK and Theo Von have a shout), I cannot express how delighted I am to see them both together.
    Tommy is one of Ireland's many great gifts to the world, and a constant reminder to me of the beauty of a culture that i am so ashamed our country did their best to erase.
    My Dad and i promote him to everyone we know, and he has a grwat many fans in england as far as I am aware.
    I hope he gets the many deserved fans he should in the USA

    • @MrSteveo114
      @MrSteveo114 14 дней назад +1

      @ansionnachbeagrioga5260wouldn’t say he didn’t have the energy most of his performances you’d swear he was on cocaine he was that jumpy and lively but Tommy is what I term a localized comedian, most of his greatest sets are full of jokes most in the U.S wouldn’t get but the Irish and English would.
      Perfect example of this was one of his most famous sets in Ireland was then used in the Montreal Just For Laughs Festival where things were changed in some of the jokes and some left out entirely as it just wouldn’t land over there. It was still funny and he was well received but it was only half as funny as Tommy’s original unleashed set which is what made him a legend over here.
      In essence a lot of his jokes worked in the U.S but a lot of his best ones didn’t which made him a very good comedian over there but not the legend that he was here, maybe he wasn’t daring enough in the U.S who knows but lack of energy definitely wasn’t it in his prime at least 😅

      What he said about the Flight of the Earls was completely wrong. In 1601, the British finally defeated the Gaelic kings of Ireland (there were many and they each ruled small parts of the country). Hugh O'Neill, who was the Earl of Tyrone (one of the most powerful remaining Gaelic families) left Ireland with his family aiming for Catholic Spain rather than living under British rule. It was significant because it marked the end of Gaelic run in Ireland. It had nothing to do with poets or artists.

      @@philipdavid1053aye exactly, noticed that too. Was a very good conversation and Tommy’s obviously a curios person willing to follow many threads but his knowledge of the history was clearly lacking. Love the podcast! But just want to point out: The flight of the earls was after a 9 year long war against the English, when the Irish Earls (or Lords) Hugh O'Neill and Red Hugh O'Donnell, rebelled against the crown. These were men who had paid lip service to the English monarchy, but were secretly gathering men and material to kick the English out. Initially they had successes, and even convinced the Spanish to send an army to assist. But the Spanish army arrived in the wrong place, and the English managed to destroy them, followed by the Irish relief army that had been sent to link up. Later, when their last strongholds were under threat, the earls decided to flee Ireland to the continent, in an attempt to raise another army to free Ireland. Unfortunately, this never came to pass, with Hugh O'Neill eventually dying in Rome, and with him, the possibility of another army being raised.

But they were kind of forced to do so - surrender and regrant the English called it. Ultimately, they fucked up militarily at the Battle of Kinsale, did a runner to protect their own hides, and left ordinary Gaels like my people in the lurch when their pleas with foreign euro courts came to nothing. Not so poetic really.

    I love the fact Bill tried his best to be the interviewer for so long , and eventually just succumbed to Tommy asking the questions and it was fantastic to see two friends just talking about comedy, Life, and every little thing in between.

    A genuine joy to see these two men in one room.
