This FORGOTTEN NBA Scandal RUINED Kevin Garnett's Prime

- Kevin Garnett had a great NBA career, but during most of his time on the Timberwolves he never had a great team around him. The main reason was because of this scandal with the Minnesota Timberwolves front office. It led to some major consequences that set back the Wolves franchise for years, while also hurting Kevin Garnett's chances to contend for a title.

Sorry about the light humming noise in the background of my narration...I found out why that happened and it'll be fixed in the next video
Andy Hoops it's ok
I didn't notice it until i read this comment. Unpin this to save others pls. lmao
Shit, maybe that's what they're doing to derrick rose's salary as we speak.
Andy Hoops iiiii
Andy Hoops i understand it illegal but why is it illegal
Minnesota just couldn’t surround him with enough talent. They struggle to this very day with assembling a competitive team. Fans there know all too well that KG was a championship centerpiece and they missed the boat.
It's not like MN didn't try. Didn't help that they are a small market team, and also back then Stern and the NBA wanted KG out of MN to join NY or L.A.
TyTimeIsAwesome similar thing is happening with karl anthony towns now
Minnesota screwed up their chance to surround him with talent by losing all those draft picks in the Joe Smith fiasco. Didn’t that cost them like 4, 5 picks, some of which woulda been lottery picks?? I bet they wish they could’ve had those picks back. Or maybe in 1996 they could’ve kept Ray Allen instead of trading him on draft night for Marbury. Or maybe, just maybe drafting Kobe. Imagine KG and Kobe on the same team.. frightening to think of what could’ve been.
@@sickofguysnamedtodd2293 Kobe wasn't going to go there. The Nets wanted to draft him and he told them not to. Obviously the Joe Smith fiasco killed them. That was an insane punishment. They're a small market team that's located in a brutally cold area. It's always going to be extremely difficult for them
KGs prime was ruined by staying loyal to Minnesota
jonathan fanfan nah he won a ring the right way not like Kevin Durant who joined the team that beat him in the conference finals
TRUTH
Loyal? He got paid.
jonathan fanfan Ant Davis and Boogie remind me of KG’s situation, they need to get to playoff contending teams
KG can get paid anywhere, not just within the wolves
One of the greatest players of the NBA history!
Edit: From a bred Lakers fan!

why
Lovely Oropesa 🖕🏻
@@2H2521 why
Overrated as fans overrate sooooo many players.
Malik Sealy was the 6’8”
shooting guard of KG dreams but got killed in a car accident. That was a game changer
The Timberwolves are cursed.
Kevin Garnett turned the celtics from last seed in the east to NBA champions in a single year
The Celtics already had Paul Pierce whom people believe would be traded before they acquired Ray Allen.
Did he? Did he really, though? Just single handedly, huh? The team was loaded that year with KG, Allen and Pierce. Not to mention how great Rondo was that season.
Mariano Rivera Garnett changed the chemistry,direction,drive,mentality...to turn them into champions.
You must have forgotten how good ray Allen was
@@terrymiller5028 because only Garnett wanted to win a title on that team 😂
I dont even understand why this is illegal, I mean if the player agrees to it. I mean some players (Dirk, Durant) signed smaller contracts so the Team could sign better players, isnt that technically the same?
I always admire KG. He plays with a lot of heart and intensity. He's definitely a hardworker on and off the court. Too bad Minnesota's GM sucks
People forget about Terrell Brandon, who was a major part of the Marbury deal. If he'd stayed healthy, Minny would have been much better off. Plus Malik Sealy's death was another stroke of bad luck.
They also lost Bobby Jackson and Chauncey Billups to fellow contenders in free agency, which further set them back. They could've done a better job of building around Garnett, but they weren't exactly destitute when it came to surrounding talent.
You didn't speak on the death of Malik Sealy from St. Johns who was better than wally szeberiak actually on the verge of becoming a great player before he died coming from KG birthday party in 01-02
Keni Fairwell he was a beast
Just about to say that
Facts!
Keni Fairwell Damn I didn't know that.
You guys are delusional. Malik was not even a lower level all-star player.
Why would they get punished for outsmarting the league
Under the table agreements are not allowed in general. I'm guessing the NBA wanted to send a message to other teams to not do it, and unfortunately the Timberwolves got caught because of a lawsuit that revealed the Joe Smith documents. I'm sure many other teams do it too, but they're just more sneaky about it.
Litty because they rig everything
I wouldn't exactly say they outsmarted the league. .... they got caught.
One thing in learned in the army. if you get caught cheating, you didn't try hard enough
Litty it's old white men in suits, they don't like that shit when plp get crafty.
I have a great topic here, no youtube channel has done a video on this yet. Its about 1972 olympic final between usa vs ussr. More people need to see the details behind this game! Please make it happen Andy!
Allen Iverson
That was bullshit. Russia is known for freaking cheating.
Allen Iverson good topic
+Mykal Ridikulus Yeah they put steroids in their children milk. Crazy mindset.
Yeah, when you read more about it, what went on was an even bigger clusterfuck. Can't blame the U.S. players for refusing to accept silver.
I made a video about it recently...6 months later though LOL
KG is underrated honestly, I feel like he was even better than Duncan in his prime, put Garnett on those Spurs teams and he'd have won just as many rings. Just was stuck on this cursed team
Lukas facts!!
Stuck??! No he resigned, he CHOSE that shit team aside from being drafted
KapitalKTV because he's a loyal player and at the time he resigned the wolves had been improving before this incident happened
Lukas I don't discount his loyalty but I'm saying he wasn't stuck there. Teams would've loved to get KG but he wanted to make it with the Wolves, its commendable but it's also his own doing
The only championships KG could won on the Spurs were 1999, 2005, and maybe 2007
You forgot about Malik Sealy R.I.P. He was a solid player alongside KG.
Kevin Garnett is the reason that I got into basketball. I remember those days but I was too little to think about these stuff. I just enjoy watching and playing it. Some of these videos are mind blowing to me. Imagine what would happen if he surronded with a team like Tim Duncan. Such a ruined talent and leader. You are doing an amazing job Andy. I can watch your videos for hours. Thanks for your efford and everything.
Saw a Supersonic clip in this, got a little upset 😭
President Cthulhu, i know how you feel
President Cthulhu i read this fucking comment as it happened.
I get upset every time I see dem ugky ass okc uniforms too. Stick to football in Oklahoma. Give Seattle bk their team. wtf
President Cthulhu don't worry Oklahoma City is getting exactly what they deserve. They traded James Harden for nothing because they didn't want to sign him. Kevin Durant had enough of Russell Westbrook and being in Oklahoma City so he left. They traded away Serge Ibaka for Victor Oladipo was a bust. They let go Dion Waiters they let go Reggie Jackson. Oklahoma City could have been a dynasty and it blew up in their face serves that owner right for moving that team out of Seattle. I'm not a Sonic fan but I believe franchises who been in cities for a long time should stay there forever.
Nathan Explosion right!
Damnnnn 5 first round draft picks taken? Even the adjusted 3 first round picks taken is overkill
Favorite player👌🏽 I thought it was Malik sealy his teammate that died this ruined his prime but The big ticket had a great career🤘🏾
Joe Smith was a #1 pick who never lived up to the hype. The Wolves basically hamstrung themselves for years all for a player who turned out to be a scrub... 🙄
David Stern only likes it when he is the one pulling the strings behind the scenes. He didnt like the wolves encroaching on his territory of fixing where players go in free agency (like when Stern blocked Chris Paul from going to the Lakers, rigging draft picks etc)
Who knows maybe the warriors are doing the same thing with Demarcus cousins
Maybe bro
True
No 1st round picks in 2020 to 2025 for the warriors.
Cousins went to a championship team. That guy went to round 1 play off team. So cousins taking less money makes sense.
Fake news
That Sonic's playoff line was savage, haha
This was very informative, I had no idea that any of that ever had taken place.
Stephan Marbury wanted to be THE GUY after his rookie season with the Timberwolves and left.the team. Together they would have been a formidible tandem.
the basketball gods just hate minnesota for some reason lol 😂 and i'm a hardcore timberwolves fan hopefully this year they will get to 50 wins
Jack Dunn it'll be interesting. I think it's going to take them a year to mesh
I lived in many states, none of which had a professional basketball team, including Kentucky (College games were nice, but why in the hell does Kentucky not have a NBA team?!) I found myself living in Minnesota now, finally a state with a NBA team... I'll now be a Wolves fan regardless
Jack Dunn lol they may get the title in 2025. KAT will be finals MVP.
Basketball and Football.
ɥsǝlʌ us Minnesotans will only allow this if you buy us popcorn otherwise it's bandwagoning 😂
KG was the meaning of a "franchise" player. He was the franchise LOL Always loved watching him play always in beast mode! Greatest PF ever!
graffProdigy eh, maybe top 5 and that's being generous.

Kevin Garnett was just as good as Tim Duncan. Don't let anyone tell you any different.
austin78993 5 rings 15 all defensive teams never not been a contender
Random Guy He's talking about individual skill not whether they were drafted by the Spurs or not
Better defender all around, more aggressive mentality, better worker and probably better rebounder too.
LOL
austin78993, I don’t if he was just as good but very close. Duncan was more of a center playing PF. Garnett was a better shooter, ball handler, rebounding and facilitating was close. Garnett better versatile defense and Duncan better post defense.
Whatt is really sad, is that Joe Smith's career took a big hit afterwards. Though he is partially to blame, because Warriors would give him the chance to shine and have a good career, with some All-Star appearances. He never had the game he had back in Golden State. Great video Andy!
This is such a stupid penalty the Wolves had to face for what they did. It wasn't in poor taste. The player was on board, they just were trying to be successful within the rules. Poor KG,poor Minnesota.
Ur videos are great Andy! Keep em coming
Kevin Garnett used to be a force inside but decided to start shooting long contested jump shots instead.
I love this channel ! Keep it comming Andy!
He was unwise not to take the $80,000,000 guaranteed. No way I would have walked away from checking the bag and securing myself and family financial security...
As a Nets fan I know what it feels like 2 miss out on great draft picks and it seems that Garnett was also involved with us missing draft picks for many years. We still got like late 1st rounders and 2nd rounders, but only through trade. We a bad team now that will not even get an early draft pick till early 2019. We could have gotten superstars like Ben Simmons, Joel Embiid, Karl Anthony Towns, Andrew Wiggins or Kristaps Porzingis.
Cmon NBA, punish the GM's, management, or staff. Don't take away a teams draft picks, you're ruining it for the fans.
Never knew about this. Really good video. Earned a sub.
Just so you know I hear a light humming when you're talking, mostly in my left ear.
ugh I think I was too close to the AC when I was recording, is anyone else hearing the humming noise?
Meow Tow no Andy and nice vids
I hear it bro
Andy Hoops I hear it
Okay I'll make sure to fix it for my next videos
honestly one of the best channels that are actually informational
Cavs better be doing this for Rose
Hector Beltran Folks need to let Derrick Rose go. He's never going to be what he was. Now he's just an above average player.
The Rose in The Garden pipe dream
18 5 and 5....sooooo a just an above average stat line as I stated. Folks want to argue just for the hell of it.
I did shut up and watch him play on the knicks, and felt bad at all the cavs fans drinking the kool-aid like I did. He's "above average" like monta ellis or jeff green were, he flat out can't shoot or defend, and isn't a good playmaker. Now that he can't just detonate for 30 every other game he is clearly, CLEARLY, a net negative for your team. W/ rose starting and playing 27 mpg the cavs are off to their worst start in years... Nobody offered him any money for a reason; maybe if he stays healthy he has a future as a spark off the bench but that's it.
Super Saiyan Rose , he was the second option... not the third.
I’m glad those bums Melo and Rose are off the Knicks.
Andys videos r fire he should have more subs
These KG vs Duncan arguments always seem to be missing something very important... Parker and Ginobli (and later K Leonard) are all great hall of fame players. Not just because of Duncan but because of their own abilities.
As a rockets fan I would have loved to have Parker or Ginobli in the 2000's. Those guys are truly underrated legends.
nano retro particular Ginobili. He is the most underrated player by far in NBA history.
Duncan was always better though. Even taking their supporting casts out of the equation, Duncan was a beast. The problem is he never really did ESPN highlight stuff. It was just reliable basketball that nobody really cares for.
KG was out there screaming all the time like a maniac and losing games in the process. I like KG, but he had the option to leave Minnesota many times and he preferred to take the money. That's on him, he doesn't get a pass for his losing ways. Duncan could've probably gone to another team too and won even more chips with actual superstars instead of Gino and Parker, but he stayed in San Antonio of all places and made it a dynasty that competed with the Lakers dynasty. That's way more badass.
Thanks Joe smith
Lool
I wish you got to play with LBJ in Cleveland
Yeah joe smith ruined Minnesota F joe smith
Good video Andy Hoops but you might want to reconfigure your microphone setup, there's a humming noise whenever you speak into it
good stuff
Great Video Man, Been a timberwolves fan since 2010 and didn't know about this~
I never understood the hype around Joe Smith.
So then he wasn't that good then. I also don't get the hype around him
He was Player of the Year coming out of college. But for whatever reason he just didn't live up to that potential.
Loved the video an the info man.. keep up the good work :)
I love Kevin Garnett I'm from Minnesota
KG was the reason for the 1999 lockout. His 26 million dollar a year contract freaked out all the NBA owners. 26 million in the 90's was an insane amount of money. The team didn't have anymore money to spend on other players. The salary cap was something like 55 million at the time. His contract was over 50% of the cap.
Why are there so many asians named Andy I know 3 irl and this guy
I don't know anyone else named Andy =\
Andy Hoops lmao probably just the area I live in then
Just finished a job for a vietnamese Andy
Artemation their names aren't really Andy alot of them say common us names because theirs is so hard to pronounce
toy story was huge
3:39 - McHale 100% knew what he was doing was against the rules and it was NOT a common practice at the time. Players didn't want to risk giving up money and teams didn't want to risk the consequences of this being found out. There are other kinds of backdoor deals and arrangements that happen but this specific thing is not a common practice. Don't buy in McHale's spin.
KG was the timberwolves. He carry the team on his back. Glad he went to Boston and Brooklyn and got a ring
Kam Mike i meant won a ring with Boston.
andyi love ur videos and was inspired by you to make videos
Explained ruined this doesn't sound like ruined
Wolves essentially wasted the majority of KG's prime years because of bad management. The 3 forfeited draft picks could've been used to draft more talent to help him, or packaged in a deal to get him some help if they still had them. That's the main reason why KG was a one-man show for most of his prime, and why he never got past the first round until 2004 despite being a top-5 player in the league.
Andy Hoops man your missing so much in this video, you had to do very little research on this. Kg chose to stay with wovles, your forgetting malbury not panning out amd forcing a trade, the huge contacts givin out, chosing wally szerbiak with the 6tb pick instead of rip hamilton or shawn marion, kobe and shaq and the spurs. There is soooo much your missing, yeah the joe Smith thing was one reason but far from the main reason
Nice video Andy!
Tim Donahey and possibly the NBA other refs would not let Twolves beat the Lakers in the Kobe/Shaq era.
Wow I didn't know about that story. Great share. Big KG fan ever since. Hopefully this year they will finally make it to the Playoffs. K A-T, J.Butler, Wigs, Teague, Gibson, Dieng, looking forward to it!

Garnett was not in his prime when he went to Boston. I say this becuase yall pump up Lebron for beating an old Celtics team

Seriously? You just implied that Wolves could have won if Joe Smith scandal did not happened
Wolves would've had draft picks though, assets they could use or trade
Great vid!
i don't get why it's illegal though... it was a loophole.
Except it literally wasnt because it was stated to be illegal. Oh and the term "under the table" is referring to illegal deals between people
Prime KG and prime Agent Zero would run shit. That’d be scary.
Man KG was a beast offensively n defensively
Great videos.
still wasn't going to beat LA or the spurs...........
I love your vids
KG was the highest paid player in the league pretty much every year when he was in Minnesota. He wouldn't take a paycut as a result the team couldn't afford better players. Probably, one the of the reasons McHale had to do the Joe Smith thing and got caught. Anyone who thinks KG is better than Tim Duncan, think again. Tim Duncan took a massive paycut so that the Spurs were competitive just about every year. It's a team game and why Tim Duncan goes down as the best power forward ever and KG won't.
dan dansh KG had just signed a $126 million contract, which was HUGE and made him the highest paid player ever at the time (nowadays such a contract seems like the norm).
It may seem nice for players to take pay cuts, but not if it results in super teams like the current Warriors. A super team wouldn't be so bad if there was more than just one super team.
No one important was going there anyway
Paycuts have nothing to do with skill
This was a little to from today's perspective. What people forget is in 1985, when the salary cap was rolled back into the NBA to try to level the playing field it was David Stern who was behind that. NBA teams were required to spend a certain percentage of basketball related income on rosters. Up to 90 percent.. There were teams who would circumvent the cap.. Some free agencies were voided because of it like juwan Howard to miami. The timberwolves were convienant to make into an example. The five years was way to harsh, but given what the NBA was trying to do. I get it.. but having honest contracts at a time where the salary cap was rising more than 20 percent a year.. can't have agreement like this in secret.
Garnett>Duncan
lol put duncan on the wolves and kg on the spurs and kg would be a top 5 player while duncan wouldnt be even top 30
2003 Spurs where Duncan was the only star and he still won a championship. The only reason why you think KG is better is because he's more athletic and Duncan is boring. Duncan is the better scorer, defender, and leader. He had to team up with Paul Pierce and Ray Allen just to beat a young Lebron in 7 games.
Zzzzz Walks Duncan was not a better perimeter defender but all around better
LeGoat James shiddddddddd!!!! He's not even in Duncan's league
KG was great, but Duncan is the best PF ever
this was good info! 👍
I have a question why did KG leave was it for the money or the washed player he was??
Jdog Productions leave what exactly?
ish 2 leave the Timberwolves
Jdog Productions he got traded.
Jdog Productions they lost to the Lakers in the western conference finals and they traded him to the celtics
Jdog Productions he was traded to Boston where he actually had a team to legitimately compete for a championship
youre right andy i did forget about that
The deal itself wasn't really the scandal. Under the table deals like that happen regularly in the NBA. That's why contending teams are able to continue signing guys that would start on a lot of teams to fill out bench roles. Anyone that thinks those guys are legitimately taking ten percent of their real market value just to sign with a good team is delusional. They are absolutely being compensated under the table.
The real scandal was the fact that the league for some strange reason decided to single out the Twolves and make an example out of them for something they were fully aware that all teams do on a regular basis. And even though there were many clear examples of similar situations before that and probably a hundred since, there has never been another investigation of such a deal let alone any punishments handed out to other teams.
2:16 oh my god Smith throwing away David Robinson killed me 😂
i got nothing AT ALL against smith
i hate hate robinson
The Wolves are my favorite team and I love KG, so thanks for the video!
