Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy were more than a great double act. Maybe Oliver did define Stan to a large extent, but they were artistic soulmates on a deep level and they knew it. Nothing else can explain their bond.

Not correct about Stan Laurel. Lived as Jefferson until 28, then as Laurel until 75, so longer as Laurel than Jefferson. His first film as Stan Laurel was Bears and Bad Men (1918) co-starring his "common law wife".

Hal Roach , who they worked for many years, said they were great friends .
But, they had entirely different interests.
Hardy would leave the studio & head straight to the golf course .
While Laurel would spend hours in the editing room after the days shooting..
But , they were both very fond of each other & were connected for life through their stock & trade...
Hardy's wife, after his death, said he was always self concious about his weight & just never trusted peoples fondness for him..
Stanley's marriages were really the only conflict that came between them..
He tended to marry women who tried to control his life in films & out..
His last wife, a Russian I believe , constantly pushed Stanley to play a bigger part in their films in order to elevate his star power above Oliver's..
But in fact, Oliver was the one who had the most lines & a bigger part altogether...
But that was their characters from day one..
I still watch their films & they're hilarious..
The famous music box scenes or in Chumps At Oxford when they were lost in the maze...
    Classic comedy .

In 1960 my grandma called Stan in Santa Monica she had worked at Roach in Culver City. He met us for an hour or so. It's true Stan Laurel was in the phone book. Years later I'd see Big Brother & the Holding Co. In February 1968 in NYC. After the show I got Janice Joplin's phone # in San Francisco. Later she moved to Marin Co.
You would never see entertainers with published home phones
I took my granddaughter to see Ariana Grande who is a lip synch phoney.

There are many great books about Laurel and Hardy. But please don't waste your money buying "he" by John Connolly. In this interview he appears to be a genuine fan and appears to be a nice guy. But the book itself is sold as fiction - because that's exactly what it is. It's his filthy mind imagining sex positions of Stan while also trying to put down practically everybody who Stan came in contact with. It's quite simply the most horrendous, filthy waste of trees I've ever had the displeasure of reading. Please don't pay this man ANY money. If you really want to read this filth, then get it from the library.
If you want PROPER books about Laurel and Hardy, here are some recommendations:
"Laurel and Hardy: The Magic Behind The Movies" by Randy Skretvedt.
"Mr Laurel and Mr Hardy" by John McCabe.
"The Comedy World Of Stan Laurel" by John McCabe.
"Babe: The Life Of Oliver Hardy" by John McCabe.
"Stan and Ollie: Roots Of Comedy" by Simon Louvish.
"The Laurel and Hardy Encyclopaedia" by Glenn Mitchell.
"The Makings Of Stan Laurel" by Danny Lawrence.
The Making Of Laurel and Hardy" by Danny Lawrence.
"Laurel and Hardy: From The Forties Forward" by Scott MacGillivray
