Eric has played so many solos over this legendary track over the years. As a young lad and aspiring guitarist some 35 years ago, I saved up so much pocket money to purchase my idol’s ‘The Cream of Eric Clapton’ VHS cassette. This is the solo on that VHS (which then gets blended with some of Eric’s other performances). To me, this is the most awe inspiring and perfect solo he has ever played over this track - timeless - Love it 👌🤩🥰
1 - This is from Eric Clapton & Friends in Birmingham, England 1986...not 1972 like the title says 2 - I consider this Eric's strongest live Layla vocal but I think MSG '99 is the better overall performance 3- The guitar solo here is heroic and I love how Phil reacts to Eric's playing. The bands Eric has are always fantastic 4 - Absolutely love the tone of Nathan's bass at 1:52 5 - Super tight backing vocals from Nathan & Greg. This was one of my fave units..the 24 Nights 4 piece & 9 piece bands were the best blend of musicians I've heard Eric with in his solo career
I really think this is the best performance, the solo and Phil Collins in the drums make this exceptional, also the solo in this one is the best I've ever heard. Love Nathan, when he is missing i personally feel it, this is awesome, my favorite song.
I’ve always loved this song. It goes through so many emotions. The highs and lows of love and breaking up and moving on. The guitar tells the story. The words, although great, are secondary to what the guitar is saying. And only Clapton can make a guitar talk like that.
I've always agreed with what you say! I also think the high pitch guitar represents high levels of horrible anxiety that comes with unrequited love/obsession, and I've experienced it. And the second movement is a fight between sanity and the anxiety (again the guitar); the sanity (the piano) wins at the end.
The first time I heard this song I thought OMG. To this day I feel the same. Great guitar. All through the years I feel the same way and still love to hear it. Such great music in my day. Memories so good forever. Love Eric Clapton.
I was a teenager and had not a clue about real life. I worked overnight at a service station back then and listened to rock in the wee hours on WLS from Chicago. Talk about memories. I was captured by the instrumental interpretation of the story that was being conveyed from a world I could only dream about!
Whoa, that is Phil Collins... What a great surprise. My favorite Layla interpretation is from the early years, the smiles on their faces says it all. Awesome, thanks for uploading.
So much talent on that stage, it really doesn't get any better than this!! I remember hearing this song when it first came out in 1970, I was 16 and life was SO much better then, EVERYTHING was better then, how I miss the 70"s!!!
When l first heard this song, l like. 1972 was when l started listening to radio a.lot. My brother, Johnny. R.l.P. got me to listen to it. And this song reminds me of him. Love Eric Clapton. Listening to it again. 5/30/22. 6:33.am.
They were the days!! Awesome Guitar 🎸 he was smoking hot 🥵 on the guitar and Phil Collins drums those were the days. I’m glad that was my time to enjoy great music like
Thank you for posting this it is excellent ,the first time I heard this song was from my house near the stadium, in NY I was 10 years old. Outside of Buffalo, NY. 1974 .
This is an incredible song, I first heard it when I was a kid riding in the backseat of the car going done the road. It's goes into this beautiful piano later in the song. It's long but it's just great.
All the other versions I have seen have so many supporting guitarists. It is pretty cool to see what it sounds like with just Clapton on the guitar. Very nice….
I find it amazing that they have been rocking hard for some damn long. This was recorded in 1986, 34 years ago from now! The song itself is from the very early 70s!
@@annemarionjikeli I thought this was a 1972 video of Layla? Oops, I could be wrong. Edit: I just read the description lol! You’re correct he’s 41 ish here. (1986)
Pretty sure i saw this tour; Nassau coliseum on Long Island. Keyboard & bass players were so good, perfect compliment to Clapton. I remember Collins getting one song; In The Air Tonight. I think we went out to concessions to get a knish.
Yep! That is Phil Collins. Pretty cool huh? All these guys are so talented. How I do wish...😃 I suppose in its own way, it can be said this is really good too.

Clapton on guitar, Phil Collins on drums, and Steve Harvey on bass, what a band!
@Old Housaholic you don't say...
Steve Harvey?
--- Sure looks like him, huh?
nathan east on bass

After over 50 years, this song is still mesmerizing... Thanks Patty Boyd !!!
Honestly, one of the most beautiful songs my ears have ever heard.

I agree. Gives me chill bumps.
That opening riff is just outrageous
One of the most amazing blend of emotion and music. My favorite
Still absolutely MAGICAL!!
My God what incredible music. Human beings are capable of amazing things SOMETIMES
If it’s God given talent like this yes.

@@gonzalovargas8037 such a great version!
I knew it! It just looked like the 80's not the seventies. Thanks for setting the record straight.
The best Layla performance by Eric is in 1999..I agreed with you
Yes I agreed the best performance of Layla is In 99 MSG
I love how every time he plays this song he disguises the intro
The fact that Phil Collins is on drums is EPIC
Can't even compare to the genius of Jim Gordon. Not even close.
Man, that has got to be one of the greatest guitar performances of one of the greatest songs ever… chills…

This a joke but both EVH and Steve vai literally could make a guitar sing lol
I don't think you can get much better than this. All are legends on that stage
Putting an ad in the middle of a Clapton solo should be a criminal offense
why are u talking about this when there is no ad in the whole video????
adblockers are your friends
3:40 Phil Collins goes ham on the drums
i always thought that was him is that also eric on phills 'wish it would rain 'song
@@sandrahickey-niklov8355 Yes, Eric did guitar on that too as a guest.

I agree 100%, the 70s best time of my young life….
What a beautiful guitar solo at the beginning! So lyrical.
Sometimes I simply forget that Phil Collins is such a great drummer
That is why they got him to do the Cadburys advert.
Oh yeah, at his peak Phil was one of the very best rock drummers ever. And he did it all left handed.
I never realized how incredible the bass in the song is
The guy playing bass has been with Eric for decades...he is also playing this song with Eric on the 1995/6 album
Yeah the bass player is amazing. I think he has it turned up more than normal which is a total win
Crazy lineup! Eric and his friends killed it in this live performance. 👌
O melhor solo de quitarra que ja ouvi intocavel
Senhores, que música! Mas que música! Clapton, um gênio do rock e do blues!

What a song! It''s a gift, something you can't make happen, no matter how good you are.
My sister is named after this legendary song 🎶 Layla!!✨😍
There's no way a human can make such beauty.
I think I've seen that drummer somewhere before. This a good song and a great video!!
The great Phol Collins. Not sure if he was with Genesis at the time.
Man, that smile when Phil has the drum solo at the end. 😎
All the other versions I have seen have so many supporting guitarists. It is pretty cool to see what it sounds like with just Clapton on the guitar. Very nice….
My biggest inspiration. Clapton and the whole band.

It is from exactly 1970. Derek and the Dominos. Listen to the whole album it is amazing.
Phil and Eric a incrediable combination!!!!!👌👌👌👌🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟star power babies!!!!!
4 talentosos de fiesta. Una genialidad.
The original! You cannot get anything better than this!
What a life story and what a man. For me,Eric is the greatest.
He’s 27 here. TWENTY SEVEN! Geez the talent some people can develop is insane! His voice is just as crisp now at 75. Amazing.
This is 87 not 72 FYI. BUT ITS JUST GOLD!!
No, he is not. Late 80s vid.

Nah. Itt not a 72 video. No so far
Yeah, but, he hot jabbed and can no longer play the guitar.
...this is the best version by a country mile...
Live aid version was better for me
I like the 1988 version myself
Another underrated guitar player. Grew up listening to him in the 70's and still do in 2023
Underrated is a hell of a thing to say, he’s considered to be in the top 3 and that’s not even my own opinion
Yeah, no… Clapton is not underrated…
Hes number 2 on rolling Stones list of 100 greatest ever? Tf
Sem palavras pra dizer o quanto essa canção me toca, lindo demais!!
THIS SONG TAKES ME BACK WHEN I WAS IN BOOT CAMP M.C.R.D. SAN DIEGO 72 TO 92
Brilliantly played.
Let's all be friends and by the way, this song was recorded in 1970, and released in 1971 not 1972. It was off Layla and other assorted songs.
*Love songs
Only Duane and Eric can do it perfectly like both guitars were shooting to the stars 🌟
My favorite Clapton song without a doubt along with bellbottom blues.
Thank god for video cos what a performance 😎
BEST SOLO
Uma linda música como declaração de amor para Pattie Boyd, muito lindo 😍
Tão linda quanto você.
Phil Collins was outstanding here
Pretty sure i saw this tour; Nassau coliseum on Long Island. Keyboard & bass players were so good, perfect compliment to Clapton. I remember Collins getting one song; In The Air Tonight. I think we went out to concessions to get a knish.
Thought Phil's "In the Air" was early to mid 80s.
geil und mit dem rhytmischen Pfeffer von Phil! Top!
Triple threat...classic tune...classic musicians...😎
I was always intreged by layla love it the first time I heard it.
The best song ever!

Uncle Phil! Yeah we've adopted him
Yes that is the drummer from Genesis.
4:18 thats how high I want to be

Was he actually high lol
4:08 the man not even blinking.
Sem dúvida alguma, o solo mais belo do mundo.
His improvised intro on this is just beautiful playing. You can keep your three hundred licks per bpm. Give me this any day.
1986 or 1972?
72, gees that music is ahead of its time like the Doors hits
Yeah man , what a song , what a legend, happy birthday Eric , sorry a few days late , love ya bruva
This is the most beautiful live Layla solo after Unplugged and Royal Albert ofc
that Phil Collins on drums and mental guitar skills .
最高にかっこいい🎸
Looking for the Official Recording, but this is Good!
That voice ....

Great version!!!
This is definitely not 72. I'm guessing it's closer to 85.
It was in 1986 so your basically right
This was when Clapton was at his worse too. He was so wrapped up in Heroin at this point in time but still did a beautiful performance.
Another one of the most underrated guitar players ever
Hes nr 2 of all time in Rolling Stones top 100 list?
That was great
That guitar is nothing but unhandleably sexy! The man playing it is, of couse, the God himself.
Hearing the sample in DJ Khalid’s “I Did It” brought me here 1:00 - 1:22 🎸🔥🔥🔥💯🐐👑 #ClassicGuitarRiff 🔂🤘🏽😝🥰
I did exactly the same.

The first song God will ask Eric to play when the when he is crossed over river Jordon to meet his maker.Amen
He wrote this song to woo the wife of a good friend of his. Not sure God would appreciate that.
Is anyone gonna mention the bass player? He is for sure playing 11/10 this whole song!!
Saw him at Sandstone about this time and Glen Fry Phil Collins, Don Henley George Thurman, Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford, Joe Walsh, many others
As l was reading the comments. I saw one that it said Phil Collins on Drums. I didn't know he was in it. Until l saw the video. 5/30/22.

Right. These pickups on Erics guitar were not available in 1972.
