I'm happy to get another Chimney Cap. This 8" Cone Top Chimney Cap with Screen came well packaged to prevent damage, was easy to install, and has a good draw for the wood stove. I totally heat with wood in the winter and have two woodstoves in my home. My larger wood stove, the one with the new cap, tends to create a lot of creosote buildup and I must go up on the roof once a month to change out the cap and run the brush down the chimney. So, I use a two-cap system exchanging one cap for another for each month's brushing. I especially like the adjustability of this new cap. It made it super easy to install and tighten down with the adjustable hex nut on the side of the housing. No worries about a storm blowing this cap off, it is secure and not just a friction connection like other caps I have. It will also be a valuable upgrade to have the hex nut loosen when I have to take the cap off if there is excess creosote buildup on the cap essentially gluing the cap down. I anticipate it will be a snap to loosen up the hex nut and remove it instead of trying to knock it up and off as with my friction cap. If you aren’t in the know, creosote is like cement when it builds up thickly. The entire cap is well-constructed and very sturdy. No birds or squirrels will get through the mesh in the off-season.
FYI: If you need to get creosote off a chimney cap using a wire brush is a big hassle and waste of time. Have a backyard bonfire and set the cap in the fire. Creosote is flammable and burns right off in the fire. Easy peasy.
