    What do you think of this approach?

    • @maybelikealittlebit
      @maybelikealittlebit 3 года назад +2

      I love it. Some kids do need to be removed but I’d argue a majority of families (in my experience at least) simply need outside education support to relearn how to healthily get the positive outcomes and behaviours (critical thinking, compassion, self care, etc) they want in themselves and their beloved children. Such a great video.

      I think that this is a wonderful approach. Far too much, reunified families cannot break out of this cycle. I think with this approach, not only are the children safe, but the families have someone to lean on. That could be the greatest thing that could benefit the very broken system.

      Love it! I hope there are also ways for 'part timers'. I mean, like being a homework helper for older kids or helping on weekends or maybe even a grandma. I got myself an extra grandma and grandpa (I just asked them) as a kid and I was so happy to have them. I would love for any child to have that special someone who will read stories to you and let you see all the old things that older people have; teach kids how to knit and bake and potter in the garden and fix bikes and such.

    I like the energy, there's many outlets for people to use. So hearing about these volunteers empowering these outlets making it easier on the community and kids is pretty cool

    • @freethink
      @freethink  3 года назад +1

      Yeah, absolutely! Sometimes people need to find the way to help out that is the right fit for them. It's great that this organization is so flexible regarding volunteer situations and the impact of providing kids and families in need with such personal support is pretty hard to beat.

    In short, this is a kind of neighborly "horizontal association model", as opposed to the "vertical top-down model" of traditional government foster care systems. Instead of relying on an "outside" government agency to manage the whole situation, its just ordinary people working side by side directly.
    Or more so as you said in the video -- it doesn't really replace the need for a top-down governmental foster care system, but works along side such a system and helps take some of the burden off of it (and off the parents).
    I think this is a wonderful idea, and we need more general mutual aid/support systems like this.

    • @freethink

      Yes, that's a great way to put it. Glad you liked it and totally agree on the need for more general mutual aid systems!

    I was just doing research into how I can become a foster parent but I didn’t feel like it encompassed enough of a family environment. This is a wonderful option to be able to help keep families together and be there to mainly support the children by supporting the parents. Thank you so much for sharing this. I hope I can contribute to this in Canada when I’m finished my ECE and such. So very interesting this was posted just as I’m getting extremely interested in the human side to helping everyone in healthy parenting.

    i think that if the kids love their parents and their parents love their kids and theres no intentional abuse or neglect then assistance should be put in place to support both children and parents alike. what i dont think is that if kids hate their parents or if parents hate their kids or if there was any intentional abuse or neglect then kids should be removed from that home. before anyone objects, statistically in the uk 1 in 5 kids are abused, 1 in 7 of those cases goes unreported and yet the government pays less than half of what is needed to support all the abused children so social services can only take the 'worst' half

    Supporting family preservation is what is needed in America!! Most kids are removed for poverty/homelessness and that doesn’t equate you loosing your kids!

    Foster parent for 8 years and I adopted 2 teenage boys. This is great stuff and of course foster care should be a last last resort and of course the current system is trash and yes we certainly need something much better. Kids staying w/ their parent or parents if at all possible is a big part of the solution.

    Where are the fathers? Are they involved at any point?

    • @YeikyRivera
      @YeikyRivera 3 года назад +4

      Tbh every situation is different. I grew up in the foster care system, to be more specific, from my teenage years (14) to adulthood (20). My mother has schizophrenia and my father is in my home country (a developing country). It is quite easy to point fingers at fathers but you never know the situation.
      Surely, a lot of the negatives you hear often are related to fathers. I assure you there are some great fathers out there who have tried to get their children back [when the mother is either not mentally capable [or just on some sort of addiction]. The sad reality is that the way the human mind - & the media work is by inflating on negative experiences and making those few negative cases reality when it is not. -- A lot of people would rather hear of a deadbeat father & how horribly he treats/beats his family. It's hard to imagine a televised show promoting the opposite behaviors. If you look around, most popular things around promote the opposite [& that is simply human nature].
      But yea to properly conclude, I live on my own and still keep in contact with my family, foster mom, & her family. The extended support has indeed helped me as the video suggests. Even though we were just being human & interacting normally we strangely followed what this video depicts. It isn't always black & white.

      There are fathers involved in the program as well: safe-families.org/blog/2020/every-day-is-a-day-to-celebrate-fathers/
      Of course, every family situation is different so it's tough to speak to the details of everyone's situation.

      @@YeikyRivera no one is pointing fingers at the fathers. It was a simple question asking if they were involved. There were no negative assumptions stated. They happened to not be featured here and was curious was all.

    No agency can take possession of ANY human, if they have NOT committed a CRIME. CPS is illegal agency. CPS does not have legal authority to take Possession of Humans. No judge has jurisdiction to take a Human and put them in Possession of an agency. That Human have to commit a Crime. If that Human has Not committed a crime, that judge acts outside of their jurisdiction. Reserve Your Right to Contract.
