    Are children poor liars? Do you think you can easily detect their lies? Developmental researcher Kang Lee studies what happens physiologically to children when they lie. They do it a lot, starting as young as two years old, and they're actually really good at it. Lee explains why we should celebrate when kids start to lie and presents new lie-detection technology that could someday reveal our hidden emotions.

      I hate myself when I do this, then the other person would continue saying "you're lying right? you're smiling, yaa you got caught" for some unknown reason I kept smiling and laughing while my face is red, really make it seems like I'm lying when I'm not, and I can't stop myself ;;
      I also do this too, uncontrollable laugh, when I'm presenting in a group, I don't know why I can't stop laughing, there isn't even any reason to laugh, maybe I'm too nervous or embarrass or smtg (it frustrates me sm). aaaa (btw sorry for my english it's my 2nd language)

    My natural reaction to being under pressure is to smile, or laugh, or tell a joke, anything to relive that pressure. It has lead to many people believing I am a liar, when I was telling the whole truth. I’ve tried so hard to stop it, but it just builds up and makes it worse.

      Same here. When whenever the mood is down, and something serious happens I always laugh, or tell a sarcastic joke. I don’t know why, I just can’t help it. It always makes me second guess myself when it happens, though. I don’t know what the reaction will be anymore. Whenever I try to lie, I just burst out in laughter uncontrollably. Whenever I’m telling the truth, I…burst out in laughter- quite a dilemma if I do say so myself.

    I once babysat my nephew, he was 6 at the time, and we made his mother a craft to give on mother’s day. I told him we couldn’t tell his mom because it was a surprise, and that if she asked what we did during the day, not to say we made a craft. When his mom came home, she promptly asked what we did together and he said, “We didn’t make you a mother’s day craft” 😂😂😂

    My cousin is 2 and a half and she lies all the time. I think if something sounds too ridiculous to be true then it’s easier to tell, but sometimes she’s crafts lies that are impossible to distinguish from the truth. One of the main reasons is because she convincingly cries to her parents when telling a lie or uses a unhappy facial expression. She’s so easily able to pull herself into the fantasy that she tells others. For me, this is convincing evidence that children are not only very good liars but use lying in order to understand how the world works and how they can manipulate it.

    Quite surprised the audience didn't get that the second child was the one that was lying. The strong shaking of the head in addition to the simple 'no' was what gave it away. Why go to the effort of seeming innocent when an innocent person would be confused why they were even asked the question?

    I have one small thing to say, I think if adults trust children, they wouldn't lie as much. Because they would know that it's alright to tell the truth and that they're gonna believe you. Even if you say you trust your child, they know you don't, they also know just as much about you as you know about them.

      Love this comment so much. I think parents should make it easier on themselves by just teaching their kids about the perks of being honest and let them decide for themselves what they're going to do. Personally I don't think being honest is what gets kids in trouble, how the parents REACT to their kid lying is how the kid would get in trouble.

    My problem is I’m OCD about NOT lying, because it’s more trouble for me to manage my anxiety if I have a lie-taint in me. It’s much easier for me to tell the truth and let the chips fall. And in doing so, it’s easier to avoid being in a position where I would be accused of lying. But I also turn red and fidgety if I so much as suspect someone THINKS I’m lying. When I was a child, I would smirk uncontrollably if I thought someone was accusing me of lying when I wasn’t. I will never know why I had that reaction, and it occasionally happens now as an adult. These reactions results in people thinking I AM lying. I’ve been accused of stealing, cheating on tests, cheating at games, breaking or damaging things...when, in fact, I go out of my way to avoid doing things I might later be accused of lying about. Yes...I lead a very boring life. 🙂 So I highly doubt this new gizmo would work on me. I would only be accused, once again, of lying.
    And what about psychopaths? They have little fear, so they could care less if someone was challenging their lying about lying. I can see a few occasions where this new contraption wouldn’t work.
    But if it did work 100%, it would be interesting to use in court...or at a poker game.

    Great talk! I just had a 40 yo housemate who lied in order to rent from me. In interview, I asked “what do u do for breakfast?” He said he eats oatmeal every day & prepares it in Microwave. So IMMEDIATELY after moving in he’s making HUGE breakfasts, & filling the house w/ hot olive oil odors, all at 6 am. Then, when moving out I asked if he vacuumed his carpet, he said of course, many times, which I was shocked to hear, since I’d never seen a vacuum near his room. So that day, I vacuumed & got a canister full of dirt & I realized the carpet had NEVER been vacuumed over 2 years. LOL. So he lied coming in & lied going out. How appropriate. I’ve a new nice guy as a housemate & he lied as well about his work schedule & more. I’ve concluded that people learn to lie when young & it’s habitual. They believe, Why not lie? It’s easy & convenient & rarely will u get called out on it. Plus, I definitely can’t tell when people are lying & It seems 99.5% of people I meet are outright, unapologetic liars.

    I'd be interested in knowing if children and teenagers have a higher success rate of detecting children's lies. They're probably more likely to remember what it was like to lie at a young age, and therefore be able to use that remembrance to their advantage.

      I think that catching people of any age in lies is mainly a factor of how well you know them, and how much attention you're paying. There are no simple tricks or rules, you get out what you put in, and even then you're best off knowing that you're not going to be very good at it.
      I recall being a teenager, and that experience was mainly defined by being very sure I knew things that I didn't actually know. Just sayin.

    • @BestAnimeFreak
      @BestAnimeFreak 6 лет назад +14

      Does that mean you got the kid right in this video?
      Because the boy looked down, broke eye contact and said no.
      The girl on the other hand kept eye contact and said no.
      That means the eye movement of the liar was not even close to be rapid, while the one who said the truth had rapid eye movement.

      @Erklzanderz 3 года назад +23

      Correct. Children who smile when asked whether they are lying tend to be telling the truth, because they are usually proud of themselves in that moment. It is a small sense of accomplishment or achievement to have the opportunity to lie but tell the truth instead. Generally children will lean towards lying if there is a punishment. When asking my own children whether they are lying I will get the truth if I include "you will not get in trouble if you tell the truth", or "I already know the answer, so please be honest with me right now and you won't be in trouble". Then to reinstall the idea of honesty I remind them that they will always get in more trouble for lying, as well as dealing with the consequences of the reason for the lie.
