I agree with the choking theory. Points that are great from the video: 1) The distraction theory suggests that the performace suffers when the mind is preoccupied with worries, doubts, or fears, instead of focusing its attention on performing the task at hand. 2) We usually need to perfom actions subconsciously, instead of looking at the precise details. 3) We need to practice under stressful conditions. We must be accustomed to pressure. 4) We need to extol the virtues of a pre-performance routine, like taking deep breaths, repeating a cue word, or doing a rhythmic sequence of movements. Points that I'd like to add here to address stressful situations: 1) We shouldn't ask "What If?", cause that will make us to panic. 2) We must stay positive in the situation. 3) We must make jokes. By making jokes, we don't take everything seriously. 4) No mater whatever we do, we should remember that this isn't so bad. 5) We must have some trust on external or internal things.
the thing that’s helped me personally get over my issues with pressure, and even physical pain, is just reminding myself that the feeling simply, “can’t last forever.” then it all almost immediately melts away
Whenever I'm in a stressful condition, I imagine myself in a different world where I've already achieved my goal. 1) This helps me feel less stressed about getting it done. 2) It allows me to imagine HOW I want to do it, so I have an accurate plan.
1. Practice under stressful conditions. 2. Pre-performance routines- taking few deep breaths, repeating a cue word, doing rhythmic sequence of movements. 3. External focus on the ultimate goal

Hello there, just wanted to share my experiences with failing driving tests multiple times which brought me to this video. I have an anxiety disorder which is getting worse, I have been at the hospital a few times this month due to unknown cause of pain that has been bothering me for years. Anyways, driving has always been a skill I knew I"ll be good at and love it but when it came to tests (final tests, on the road) I panicked and failed 3 times. I made mistakes I have never made on my driving lessons which shooked me and my instructor. I was just to overwhelmed with fear of failure, school, finals and other personal problems. After every test I have failed my confidence just kept falling down to the ground. I have a test this week after being sick for a solid month. I can't let stress overwhelm me so I will try to keep my mind on the end goal, not the performance and details. Thank you for this video. If somebody who read this has some other advice I would love to hear it.

There's a manager at work who is fine when not in front of a crowd (where he has to speak every day in small shift meetings). When he has to talk, he _sounds_ fine. His voice is smooth, but his hands are shaking. I admire his courage to face that level of nerves on a daily basis. It's worse when we have the big, all-store meetings and he's in front of hundreds. He gets up, does his part, but his hands tremble so badly, I wonder what it feels like in his heart...
I remember the solo concert as a guitarist I had once. I was practicing hard for it. And the minutes before I went on stage I really forgot everything. I tried to think about the chords and solos... Exactly. I once wrote a math contest without being informed that it was a really important contest and did really well. But when I practiced for months for another contest, I forgot everything once I got there and did poorly. That’s why I make myself believe that tests are merely homework exercises and take them with a casual mindset.

I agree with the fact that when you start thinking about something which you can do with muscle memory/subconsciously, you choke. I play the piano, and I always learn a song in a way that it is in my muscle memory so that I don't make mistakes. Whenever my coach asks me to play the song, or if somebody else is seeing me play, I just start thinking about what I am playing and mess up everything. Loved this video, it was very helpful.
I am preaparing for my third motorcycle driving exam. I am a good motorclycle driver, but I missed two exams. I will watch it again near the test, I think is very helpful.
2:36 this video is amazing, I now know what has been ruining my javelin throwing. I’m thinking to much on the mechanics and I just need to consider that I’ll throw it far, thank you ted ed!
I still remember how I got thrown into an extemporaneous speech contest back in 9th grade (actually it was just last last year lol). The teacher in charge gave a speech, advices and all. Throughout his whole speech was a quote, *"Grace under pressure."* And somewhat it came to me. Just act as if you're explaining to a friend, to a classmate on that certain topic. You don't have to delve into it too much.
I quit performing dance recitals, due to severe anxiety. Recently I've been at a cross roads on whether to keep training or quit altogether. This video explains a lot. Thank you.
Thank you for explaining some of the reasons why we choke, and ways we can prevent this. Practice under pressure with focus can prepare us for important events that will tie into our living full out.
Things i do When ever im in pressure 1. Take deep breathes and be present in the moment 2. Just have the practiced things in my mind other than that nothing else 3.calm down and improvise when needed 4.focus on my goal 5.stay positive and always think that you can do it (this is so imp cause it gives u a mental boost) Hope this helped😄
This is so true, I remember practicing day and night for months to prepare for a badminton competition, only for me to fail because I was too focused on tactics and stuff like where to place my feet
I’m a literally a person who fails right when it matters most. I hadn’t known the reason but this video told me. I hadn’t practice under stress environment to perform better. The “choking” phenomenon beat on me so I try to take a few deep breaths, repeat a cue word, and do a rhythmic sequence of movements. Those routine works help me to jump into stressful practice.

This would help me a lot, most of the time I put myself under pressure even if I don't need to. I can't express myself properly if I focus on what I am about to say, I forget the choreography because I'm thinking about the next stepping, and I mess up when I think about how the other people look at me. At least I know what to do now. Thanks! ❤ I hope I don't scare myself again.

Hahaha! I guess I should thank my friends who made me practice playing the piano under pressure before performing in a small concert. At the time I thought it was so weird that I kept asking them to stop doing it because they were literally staring intensely at me right in front of the piano as I was playing.
This works! I’ve stopped being stressed about most of my tests and I’ve been doing better (simplifying it a bit but you get the picture) Thanks for the great video!
This would happen to me all the time when I was playing volleyball. I was quite a good player but everytime I went to a match I would constantly think "what if i do terribly?" and of course I would end up choking. I mean it didn't help that my own team always hated me. I just couldn't take the pressure anymore and had to quit :(
I cannot believe this video helped me a lot at the moment. I had been under pression so much and then it helped me because I was bad at previous project after dealing with them I was little anxious about my tasks. Clearly I understand the system right now.
I had never actually seen the term "Explicit Monitoring" before but totally understand what it means. We always just called it "The Yips" in my circles. Basically, you get really good at something and do it all the time. But at some point your brain decides "it's time to start closely analyzing this!" What was once super simple and easy to accomplish, is now a complex and insurmountable action.
I've noticed both of these phenomenons acutely when skateboarding (I'm a relative beginner). I'm a natural over-thinker, and when I just concentrate on the details--pop the tail, slide your foot up the board, jump with your back foot at just the right moment, catch the nose, bend your knees--all while thinking "What if I slip out and hit my head?", I can't ollie at all. One night I got so frustrated after failing (and falling) so many times, I decided I didn't care if I fell or got hurt. I was so mad at my brain I told it to shut up because I was doing this whether it liked it or not. That night, I ollied while rolling for the first time ever. It was so easy, I couldn't believe it. I then proceeded to do it five more times.
I did some soul searching and I realized that I crack under pressure due to lack of knowledge on something. I just have to know about that topic, so I won't feel too under prepared and rushed to give information on that topic. Yes, I can admit that I do feel fear when people are judging me and that can also mess me up. So, I think it's best to not worry so much about what other people think of me, and more about what I think of myself. Thank you for the video.

I agree with the choking theory. Points that are great from the video:
1) The distraction theory suggests that the performace suffers when the mind is preoccupied with worries, doubts, or fears, instead of focusing its attention on performing the task at hand.
Points that I'd like to add here to address stressful situations:

2) We must stay positive in the situation.
3) We must make jokes. By making jokes, we don't take everything seriously.
4) No mater whatever we do, we should remember that this isn't so bad.
5) We must have some trust on external or internal things.

Loved this video, it was very helpful.
i’m simple, i see kageyama, i click
ME BYE
HAHAHA SAME
I yelled KAGEYAMAAAA then i click
Lmaooo same
same here =))))
I am preaparing for my third motorcycle driving exam. I am a good motorclycle driver, but I missed two exams. I will watch it again near the test, I think is very helpful.
Hi
2:36 this video is amazing, I now know what has been ruining my javelin throwing. I’m thinking to much on the mechanics and I just need to consider that I’ll throw it far, thank you ted ed!
1. Practice under pressure
2. Routine before hand
3. External focus on end goal
I am glad RUclips recommended this video as I was passing through the same stresses while performing simple tasks!
Thank you.
Jen O'Hogan a random Internet stranger hopes you figure things out. Best of luck
Thank you for explaining some of the reasons why we choke, and ways we can prevent this. Practice under pressure with focus can prepare us for important events that will tie into our living full out.
Things i do When ever im in pressure
1. Take deep breathes and be present in the moment
2. Just have the practiced things in my mind other than that nothing else
3.calm down and improvise when needed
4.focus on my goal
5.stay positive and always think that you can do it (this is so imp cause it gives u a mental boost)
Hope this helped😄
It was helpful.Thankyou!
This is so true, I remember practicing day and night for months to prepare for a badminton competition, only for me to fail because I was too focused on tactics and stuff like where to place my feet
Hi
I’m a literally a person who fails right when it matters most. I hadn’t known the reason but this video told me. I hadn’t practice under stress environment to perform better. The “choking” phenomenon beat on me so I try to take a few deep breaths, repeat a cue word, and do a rhythmic sequence of movements. Those routine works help me to jump into stressful practice.
TED-Ed, every single one of your videos never fail to amaze me. I love your channel (even though I just discovered it), and have watched your videos. They are all very useful and I'm glad I found your educational channel. Thanks to your videos, they have helped me a lot in my daily problems. Keep up the good work and I hope to see more quality content coming our way!!!
Love from Singapore
thank you so much for the advice kageyama... now i can set without worrying about the opponents' blocks
Lol, finally someone with haikyu reference
Someone said it finally lol
going to use this to avoid getting choked by my thesis pressure -_-
Omg same. That's why I'm here
omg! same, for me, today is the D-2 before the thesis examination
Kageyama and Pen Pen, how wholesome.
😔✊
The ”choking” guy praise in the end is just too cute 😂
Practice, under pressure, with focus,
and with that glorious end goal in sight,
makes perfect.
Why is no one talking about the dudes name is called Kageyama in the title
thank you!! I was looking for this comment 😭 haikyuu?

ligit one of the reasons I tapped this vid
lol , i didn't even notice xD
Kageyama does very well under stress, he got that from the volleyball matches and dealing with Hinata
i was looking for a comment mentioning kageyama
This video gives a precious knowledge on performing good under pressure it'll help a lot of people.
That internal vs external focus is gonna be huge. Thank you
Practice, under pressure, with that glorious end goal in sight, makes perfect!
Self Love is also necessary to believe in one's ability and reproduce it without thinking.
Hi
Hello
This showed up on my feed 3 hours before a college interview. Timing couldn’t be more perfect
I could listen to her for years
"Pressure is a privilege." ...why this sounds like a revolution to me?
A girl waves at me.
Me: *sweats profusely
Watching this and thinking back to all those many times I (might've) messed up in front of a large crowd gave me a panic attack (~'-')~
Harus bisa manage mood kita spaya bisa focus, calm n confident. Buat haters n hate comments diabaikan saja jangan sampai merusak mood n focus kita, krn memang itu tujuan mereka. Keep fighting!
Didn't know I clicked so fast when I saw the word KAGEYAMA in the title...
But this really helps! Thank you!
HQ!!
Hahaha! I guess I should thank my friends who made me practice playing the piano under pressure before performing in a small concert. At the time I thought it was so weird that I kept asking them to stop doing it because they were literally staring intensely at me right in front of the piano as I was playing.
It's just like when you go "don't be weird" then end up tripping
I remember my notification said "avoid choking under pressure". 3 hours later it changed to "stay calm"
I have a crucial exam tomorrow and RUclips recommended me this. AI works brilliantly sometimes.
Thank you! This was needed.
This works! I’ve stopped being stressed about most of my tests and I’ve been doing better (simplifying it a bit but you get the picture) Thanks for the great video!
we could see everything in different perspective
That a man named Kageyama contributed to this lmaooo
Setters are prone to choking
Can you imagine Kageyama choking? 😁😁
You know what kagey (caguei) mean in Portuguese
Javeria Jamali Yes. by Hinata

Was going to comment this, but thank you
Got my GCSE English Lang speech on Wednesday and I’m sooo nervous....

Good luck!
TED-Ed thank you!!!!
John Adams doesn’t have a real job anyway 1) GOOD LUCK my sister is doing hers too 2) Hamilton is amazing 👏
Red Rose haha thanks 😂, aww good luck to her 💕
Happy Bear well I’m trying to focus on school right now 😂
I love that you guys added a fractal shape to the pressure idea
the authors of this have excellent names
Totally off topic but when I saw "Kageyama" at the title, my inner Haikyuu fangirl accidentally came out...
lol sameee
The best way to be calm under pressure is to believe everything will be fine at the end...
tell that to me when I’m under the heat of the moment and I will not understand you. 🤷🏻♂️🤣
Stay positive and optimistic dear learners. The world needs heroes like you. The world needs your efforts.
Thanks 😊 for this video! I had a public speaking assignment where I had to give an oral report at college. And this video helped me a lot!
This ones good! I usually cripple under pressure and can't move and becomes more unfocused, I hope more people are helped by this
This would happen to me all the time when I was playing volleyball. I was quite a good player but everytime I went to a match I would constantly think "what if i do terribly?" and of course I would end up choking. I mean it didn't help that my own team always hated me. I just couldn't take the pressure anymore and had to quit :(
Hopefully South African cricket team is watching this.
That is not a case of choking. They were always unlucky.
@@mikeroot5108 yep buddy
Hey, Ted Ed nice video as always. Can you make a video about how to remain calm during exams? Have a difficult 3hour exam next week.
I tried to keep calm but he started his job right after reaching to the bed without making me anymore nervous!!
The line " that phenomenon is called choking" is really funny
I needed this today.
I love you so much Ted Ed ^ ^
I have a strong feeling this applies to all if not most areas in life. Super insightful.
The two times I lost my goggles was during a test and during a race.
🤣🤣🤣
lmao
I'm still haunted about the time I stuttered when I did my speech...
I really need this!
