    Sgt. Maj. Black and I were in school (SAWIC) together when we were both SSgts.
    He was very professional and squared away even then; I'm not surprised he rose to the top enlisted rank in the Corps.
    He also did a really good impression of Steve Irwin from time to time to break the tension!
    Congratulations and Semper Fidelis!

    Even though I'm no Marine I'm quite fortunate that have met several throughout my nearly 37 years of life and do have 2 cousins as USMC officers, the first being a Major at Camp Lejeune, the second a now honorably discharged Captain whose last duty station in San Diego is now his hometown! 3 years ago I had the great honor to be visiting the National Museum of the USMC near MCB Quantico and a now retired Lt Colonel was retiring that day and also that day had the tremendous privilege to meet retired Lt Gen Richard Mills former commanding general of the USMCR!

    When I went with my father for his 45th Viet Nam Marine reunion in DC, we were all invited as a group to the barracks for one of these events. The group was given recognition and treated very well. Senator Inouye from Hawaii was the as well. After the spectacular performances by the Marine Band and Silent Drill Team we were greeted by the Senator and Commandant himself. We even met Chesty as he was getting plenty of pets from everyone. An evening I will never forget.

    In 1992 I attended the retirment ceremony for a female LDO Captain. Before she finished speaking she broke down and cried. She had joined the Corps in 1969 when women were asked to serve and "Free a man to fight". She never wanted to be under the same stadards as male Marines. She never wanted to wear cammies or a male compatable uniform. She never wanted to have a male only MOS, she wanted to serve in the capacity that she enlisted for. This change has been coming for many years, it's been empowering for some women and equally devasting to others. Many were pushed out to make way for the new women of the Corps. Truly Bitter Sweet.

      @@RezSzn the marine corps is different on the inside than the outside. The leadership isnt professional, the brotherhood died a long time ago. You want to serve your country? Join the national guard or become a firefighter. I've been in 3 years now and I'm telling you I was the same way, until a ssgt told me how young privates who go to war actually get those purple hearts. They dont sacrifice themselves. They're literally shoved by their leaders who they trust onto grenades and die. Why? Because a man will kill whoever it takes to get back home. Dont try to be a hero or prove anyone wrong, dont let your ego kill your happiness. Dont go to the marines. We do have the prettiest ceremonies though. Pomp & pageantry at its best. Almost joined the Marines. It was between the Army & Marines & I loved my time the Army but I have nothing but the utmost respect for the Marine Corps. That was some badass drill & ceremony. They were flawless. If this video didn’t recruit some future Marines, I don’t know what else could.
    Congrats to SGM Ronald L Green on your retirement & to new SGM of the MC Troy E Black.
    The best part of the military is the lack of racism. Your boss might be a minority and it doesn’t matter. You will fight and save the brother next to you no matter the race. If you want to move up, race doesn’t matter. You only cared about a person’s merits, nothing else. Yeah it exists but it gets boiled away as opposed to civilian life where it festers. The last 4 of 6 SGM of the MC were men of color.
    Wish I couldv’e done a few years in both services. You always wonder what it’s like on the other side.

      Normally you don't salute an enlisted man but there are certain exceptions. The most notable is if they're a Medal of Honor winner, anybody who has earned a Medal of Honor gets saluted regardless of rank. The other time that you would salute an enlisted man is if they're standing in for an officer as part of a formal ceremony or formation.

    My uncle joined the marines right after Pearl Harbor. He was 14 years old. Google Franklin Wells Butterfield.

    I never realized the Marines had a red dress uniform for the band....and look at the band leader. It all looks so very British

      Yes, the drum major's bearskin is modeled after the British. The red uniforms of the USMB and the Drum and Bugle Corps honor field musics who wore the opposite color of their unit to be easily located by the commander.

    Shows how much of the US Army & Navy are modelled on the British. The Band Major is wearing a Busby, same a British Guards Battalions. Not that, that is a bad thing.

      I may be wrong but isn’t it a bearskin and not a busby?

    Pardon my ignorance about this parade but why is an event of this importance held at night? Sure there's spotlights but the rest isn't well lit. Kinda hard to see everything that's going on

    • @daniel_sc1024
      @daniel_sc1024 5 лет назад +7

      I would guess it's because it July, one of the hottest months of the year, and they are wearing those dress uniforms, which are probably very uncomfortable under the Sun.

    • @shreepechbhattarai6798
      @shreepechbhattarai6798 5 лет назад +2

      It is more well lit if you are there in person. It is much more spectacular to look at.

      Andrew Johnston Yes, These are the “sunset Parades” that go every Friday night (I think) in Washington D.C. and are freely available to the public. They are better lit when there in person, and the spotlights are definitely part of the effect and glamor of uniforms, instruments, etc.

    • @oltyret
      @oltyret 5 лет назад +1

      That's what makes it a "Sunset Parade" and it's not particularly important. The original purpose of sunset, evening and twilight parades was to entertain the garrison civilians since military life was so boring. It is more of a social event than a military event.
