Couldn’t agree more. I need to do something about the stream of water which comes from the door top directly onto my knee when it rains. Always something. But I’ve fixed the self opening passenger door at least. 😀
"...the project was finished.." made me chuckle - It's never over in a Rover! Your video is very timely, I've just ordered a new speedo cable for WRD as mine is on the blink. The old girl also clearly lunched a syncro spring this week, she's obviously not satisfied with my toils... but I get to spend another weekend tinkering. Thanks for the video, I hate having the dash out so it gives me some motivation for the job. I had not considered using the old cable as a puller, a great idea.
Hi Phil. Just discovered a few vids on RUclips of synchro springs renewed in situ. If you can’t find it, let me know. I just bought a set of five long handle pliers with straight 30,45,90 ends to ward off anything happening to mine. “Its never over in a Rover. “ I like that.
I first learned of this back when I bought WRD in 2013, having drained out bits of spring the weekend after I bought it! I never got around to sorting it and the box went pop a few years later when a second spring broke free. Reading various forums, it's obvious there is a technique and a 50/50 success rate. I've got a spare mainshaft and syncro hub so I'm going to have a practice on the bench first before taking the vehicle apart and hopefully discover the technique.
Halló!!! I remember to read that some people put grease inside the cable. And for the power I bought a old lighter to put in the dashboard. Great job!! And long life for our series!!!
The simple things of having a working speedo is so satisfying. I’d install a hidden USB port in the center console or behind the dash to plug into easily.
On the S3 wiring diagram (diesel model anyway) those red/black sockets are "Inspection Sockets", and they don't seem to go through a fuse! So if you do want to wire them up to a 12V to 5V adaptor, you should make sure there's a fuse in there! My landy had a cigarette lighter socket which I've removed and wired up a USB socket. I've got an auxiliary panel of switches above that slot-you-dont-want-to-cut part of the dash, and I'll hack a hole for it there when I get it back from the garage once they've fixed the transmission. Again.
@@My911 September: got stuck in 3rd, gearbox went to refurb, refitted, new clutch etc, got it back Feb, first time out lost drive, eventually got low range, called garage, they'd sacked the mech who did the refit work, picked up the car, and they've had it 3 weeks. it *might* just be the lever linkage but...
If you don't know which end of the speedo cable is the problem, take the gearbox end off, grip the end in a drill chuck, and spin. If the speedo indicates then its the gearbox end, if the speedo doesn't indicate, its probably both ends! You can sometimes get a gearbox-end problem fixed by crushing the cable end a bit so it fits in the square hole in the gear - I think LR original parts have a square metal end that keys into it properly.
That are never “finished”, Joel. Plenty of power in those connectors for charging an iPhone, I think there’s a special plug to go into the two ports. I looked for one for mine, they are available but I decided to put a cigar lighter socket in instead. Good question. It’s not a quick job and it depends if they replaced the speedo cable too. That said, 5 hours seems a lot of time. If you are concerned you could ask them how they made up the time. Did they completely remove the binnacle from the car? If they did, that would take ages as there are so many cables and wires.
@@My911 Thanks for replying so quickly, I had wifi problems since so could not contact you. They put a new cable in just before covid to try to fix the problem, this took about half an hour as I was there waiting. I think they just ripped me off and I'm going to have to put this behind me. I also asked them to put new seals on the doors and more powerful bulbs on the lights and they did neither.
@@My911 As others have said you do need to regulate it down and fuse it - something like this works well. Can I ask a question … where exactly does the cable go and clip? I didn’t follow that 🤔 Does it run up the passenger side of the gearbox, over the bellhousing, and up the back of the engine? and where does it clip ?
Anderzander yes, that is exactly the Route. There is a clip on the side of the gearbox, on the small triangular inspection cover on the top of the Box (bellhousing) and then loose up to the bulkhead with a big bend radius. But I have a feeling mine is missing a clip somewhere.

Love the look of these old clocks.
Thanks Chris.
Fixing little things like that make a old car/truck more enjoyable to drive.

Nice, I am enjoying these vlogs. Never in a rush in a landy.
Thank you. And yes, I used to thrash it when I was a teenager but it just uses more fuel. And doesn’t really go any faster 😅

Ah, gearbox troubles. Grrr. But don’t you have a new box ready to go?

Thanks so much for this; just about to fit a new cable to my SIII and these tips are very useful.
Hi Stevie, your welcome. Happy motoring!
Top job once again mate!

You have to be careful with that though - drills can accelerate the inner cable so violently that they can damage the speedo.

Jumping is due to a broken speedo cable or dry speedo cable
Thanks for this. By dry do you mean it should be lubricated? If so, where should the lubrication be? Thanks, Joël
I use those 12v sockets for charging …
Perfect, thanks for letting me know. 👍
